Was There A Mystical Meaning To The Hebrew Language?

  • There is this idea that if you convert the Hebrew letters to the images that originated them, in Paleo-Hebrew, then you will be able to turn the text into a visual story. Ok, that's linguistically bunk. Because the idea of the alphabet is that you don't need to do that, you encode sound into letters so you don't have to rely on images to say something. Check it out!

The problem with that view is that the selection of words that do have deeper meaning is completely random. What's to determine that the word יהוה has spiritual significance but the word לחם (bread) doesn't? The selection of words that do have this deeper meaning is completely determined by the person making the point, which renders it ad hoc and making it up as you go along.
And just in case the word לחם has a deeper meaning in the Bible, what's to stop it from having the same deeper meaning in a shopping list or a recipe?
And also remember that, like all languages, Hebrew changes over time. What's to stop one word that had that deeper meaning to have it a thousand years later, when even the spelling has changed? If you remove a letter from the word אהבה (love) into something like אהבהא, the deeper meaning changes cause the component letters change. This is especially important because when the diacritical marks (the dots and dashes that indicate vowels) were introduced after the Bible was completed, many words changed their spelling as some letters that were being used as vowels were no longer necessary. Therefore some words from the Dead Sea Scrolls are spelt differently from modern Hebrew Bibles.
And last thing I can think of. Most alphabets used today are descended from the same Paleo-alphabet. The ox-head aleph sign gave rise to not only the Hebrew א, but also the Greek α (alpha) and the Latin letter A. If א has that spiritual significance due to its origin, then why doesn't every α in the New Testament have the same significance? And better yet, why not every α in every Greek source? And even better yet, why not the letter A in our English Bibles, or in every written work in any language that uses the Latin alphabet, including this comment section?
The only way that this theory can work it to posit that the Bible is some mystical magical document that came directly from heaven and has some mystical 'magical' power. But not even the Bible writers themselves believed this. That is a modern myth that has more in common with Islamic views of the Quran than it does with the beliefs of the Bible authors.

All biblical hebrew words and letters have layers of meanings, but it's not the kind of thing done with Y-H-V-H where context and grammar is lost and you get "behold the hand, behold the nail". First, to get closer to that phrase, the word should be "HYHV" which is not the correct name anymore. "Y-H-V-H" is a contraction of a phrase about the cause of all being, the "BE-er"🍺
Here's a simple example: "ידיד" (yadid) meaning "friend", is a word made up from 2 words "יד" (yod) meaning "hand", but is also a spelling of the letter "י" (yod) which is a pictograph of a hand. So we can say the picture of a friend is some who joins a hand with you "hand-in-hand".
The letter "ד" (dalet) literally means "door" and can mean the physical world. "י" also means ideas/concepts. So the description of a hand is a tool used to take ideas and bring them into this world. The IMPROPER interpretation of "יד" (hand) would be "hand door", and the IMPROPER interpretation of "ידיד" (friend) would be "hand door, hand door"

I love Dr Heiser, but this logic and perspective is faulty. Granted, you can’t use this method on all Hebrew words, or examples like all paragraphs. This fact does not disprove that you can use it on some passages, like psalms 119 which is divided into alphabetical groups that tend to speak on the topic the letter represents.
I’d also point out that calling the original pictographic alphabet “paleo Hebrew” is a misnomer. It is actually proto Semitic Hebrew. Paleo Hebrew is the second edition Hebrew. It is a revision or evolution of proto Semitic Hebrew done sometime around the era of Samuel, but even paleo Hebrew has certain letters that even when changed, continue the story line from the proto Semitic Hebrew.
Generally, I’ve found that the older the Hebrew passage, the more likely it is to have a hidden meaning that corresponds to the pictographic origins of proto Semitic Hebrew.
I have heard Dr Heiser’s view from other scholars, and the issue I have with it is they are approaching the issue from the basis that modern Hebrew has no ability or pictographic connection to a hidden meaning, thus proto Semitic Hebrew can have no ability to be connected to a hidden meaning. This is faulty logic that can be easily explained by evolutionary drift and generational knowledge loss. And of course this is before you factor in that modern Hebrew is at least 3 revisions removed from the proto Semitic Hebrew over 1500- 2000 years.
Then there’s the issue that when you scrabble the words from the proto Semitic Hebrew, it typically will fill out the rest of the story, as in the case of the word ad-wn, ketubah, yachad, mowed etc. So the concept behind the assertion is able to be demonstrated in complex formats. And finally there’s the issue of the gematria of certain words that is also encoded within the alphabet.
In my opinion, the fact that no other language I’m aware of has a hidden mystery behind it, but this one does from its earliest form, that is subsequently lost in its later renditions, simply points to a divine origination for the language and alphabet. It is faulty logic to conclude that a complex alphabet of divine origin cannot exist because simple alphabets of human origin are incapable of duplicating the same level of complexity as the divine.

Dr Heiser, I am disappointed that you answered a question that wasn't asked, then glossed over the pictographic origin of root words. Yes, it is ridiculous to read into the text hidden messages that aren't there. But the etymology of many (if not most) individual words is most certainly related to the original pictographs that make up the root. (eg: father is the "aleph/head" of the the "beth/house"). Please clarify. Is it your expert position that this is not so?

The person asking the question misunderstood the other Hebrew professor who ONLY INTENDED TO MAKE THE OBVIOUS POINT YOU'RE MAKING. Dr Heiser was shooting down a bad misunderstanding of it and so didn't bother spelling out what you spelled out about yadh & `ayin

Heiser’s audience are generally not other hebrew experts, hence some are expressing disappointment and confusion with his address. He did in fairness clarify that the words don’t linguistically convey a message, which is true. The question is do they convey a message non-linguistically? Until someone can show it being practiced or taught in the scriptures, I lean toward no.
What I find more important and what many don’t realize is numerical gematria is never endorsed as a form of hermeneutics not by teaching or by example in the biblical canon and was picked up by the rabbinic schools in Babylon. It’s literal Babylonian mystery religious practice used to glean “secret wisdom” from the text. How many commentaries and teachers tell you this? What’s ironic is it has long been used to conceal rather than reveal the true meaning behind key text in Rev 13 about the number of the name of the false messiah given as an identifier and in the book warning against the mystery Babylonian system. There’s study on my blog about ‘666’ linked atop my channel too lengthy to post here that gives the documentation for this.

Yes, the same goes with Japanese kanji (characters). Even though they have meaning on their own, the words are not interpreted “by characters” but as compounds of characters (a few characters together) and bear meaning of the compound. Although it happens occasionally that the meaning can be translated into English by translating each character one by one.
This is fantastic observation by Mr Michael. The language was created specifically to not to use images. Have you ever noticed that symbols are mainly used in all types of witchcraft, from occultism, Kabbalah, Tarot, in Freemasons rituals, in New Age etc. The symbols can be interpreted as someone wishes and may serve someone’s agenda. The same symbol may have different meaning for different person. On the contrary, the language - if properly written - has always the same meaning. Is that the reason why the Bible doesn’t contain images, graphics or sketches in order to preserve its original meaning, and not allow to “freely” interpret it?

@Pond3r Thiz True, but the context is 'pictogram'. Katakana and hiragana don't convey meaning on their own, these are just simplified two alphabets, but kanji character itself has a meaning (broad meaning), this is what corresponds to Hebrew letters (paleo Hebrew). I think to some extend someone could understand the meaning of kanji compound, by interpreting each kanji (character) one by one, but this would not be accurate in most of cases.

    • @pepethunder
      @pepethunder 2 года назад +3

I like to take everything in the bible in the literal context but also consider the symbolism. I do not think the OT is one or the other, but it is geniously written to have much deeper meaning. Thing is, if you obsess over the deeper meaning and forget about the plain text you end up with convoluted interpretations. We should learn from the bible as much as we can, but also not expect to understand every last detail immediately if ever. By all means strive for it, but be humble and accept what God allows you to understand. Humility will open your eyes more . But again, never forget the plain text.
A good example of these sorts of “sings” that may or may not be is the use of the donkey to bring the Messiah into Jerusalem. One asks why a donkey? Turns out the donkey has a cross on its back (google a photo to see what I mean). It was covered as Jesus rode into Jerusalem but there it was. People talk about it now. Jesus rode into Jerusalem on a cross. Now, as interesting as that fact is, we do not know if it was meant by God that way. It sure sounds possible, bit it does not bring anything to the table in terms of doctrine. So while its interesting and perhaps good to know, we should stick to the base text and not read too far into it. The basic gospel message is ALL that is needed. Everything else, any other interpretation we should surrender before God, lest it causes division. Seeing Christians argue over calvinism makes me sad. It should never be a source of contention. Agree with it or not, it adds nothing to the gospel to delude ourselves into thinking we understand how God works. It makes me realize why Jesus did what He did. He pretty much simplified everything to just one importan point. The gospel. That God sent His only son to save us by giving His life. We just need to trust God, like Israel was called to do when they entered Jerusalem. They where meant to have no mortal king for God Himself would lead them. They where called to be different. To trust. Let us all trust God and never fear that we are hopeless or leaderless.

There are even Targums (Aramaic) of OT passages in the NT. Even sections of Daniel are not written in Hebrew. Also, none of the NT writers or early Church Fathers recognize such "divine" qualities. More evidence there's nothing intrinsically special about any particular language.

Furthermore את which is in opening statement of genesis 1 when read in hebrew. Translates to the strength of The covenant in paleo-hebrew pictograph language. It isn't opposed that a tablet is found. Many tablets are found. Even Hebrew tablets. Sumerian tablets.
Egypt is not the founding civilization. Egypt is the northern culture group of Africa. South of Egypt were and still are tribes of cultures that speak incomprehensible phonetic languages (systems of clicks and sounds) even to this day.
Egypt is not the best source for the origination of languages. Those of the Tower of Babel were naturally forced to form their respective dialect languages, based on interaction between those who understood each other. They were almost certainly forced to separate because men that do not understand each other disagree , as you are confirming. All points of which prove they stem from a original language system. An original language base form.
Hebrew appears to the only surviving "Original" language of earth pre-Flood of Genesis.
It is possible that Noah and his family spoke different languages as well, based on an original base language root base. Speaking through images is not plausible. Because the language was in existence already. It is known that Melchizedek was in rule of Israel pre-Flood. And the Temple system in place so it would Hebrew that existed first. After the Flood it is possible that Hebrew was not written but rather orally spoken. However the language existed. That aspect of which languages existed post-Flood, Pre Tower of Babel, I have not researched fully.
Anyting that has to confirm the evolutionary construct of cave images are pre-neanderthal humanoids scratching images onto tablets as a do of communication is condition for intellectual irrationality. There were ignorant people groups, though. But that is not the origination of linguistics. Origination of languages after the Tower of Babel confusion, That would be a natural phenomena of sin and punishment.
Sumeria, Egypt, and even China and Japan are known to be post-Flood languages that the inhabitants did not understand each other nor could they community what they were saying. It was people speaking in Babel, and then forming images and and story language to interpret their co-respective speech.

Of course the Hebrew letters aren't supposed to be interpreted according to their pictograms. Everybody knows that. The reason people see it that way is because they believe that the Hebrew language is divine and it's a message from God, which, if you believe in God, isn't out of the ordinary at all. Therefore, this is more of an argument as to whether God exists or not, not how language should be interpreted. If you believe, then thinking the pictograms is conveying a story is perfecty normal, if you don't believe, then it's a bunch of hooey because God doesn't exist and Hebrew isn't a divine language, so there is no special message. Regardless of what you believe, however, I will point out that it is quite amazing that when you look at the name of God in it's original Proto-Cannanite pictographical forms it tells the story of a hand and a nail, now I wonder who that could be referring to.

to say you don't need pictures to express what it says, and that it only needs to be read or heard to know its meaning. you are using visual imagery as your base which are letters that were derived from pictures, let me ask you a question, what does a deaf person who can't read as well do with your methodology as he/she can't hear or read what's been written, oh let me guess sign language? the body or your hands gesturing different poses, ah yes, a picture formed based language. I think the picture based would have been the first, if not the first form of communication between peoples even reading someone's face is visual imagery we can read if someone's happy, sad, angry etc. therefore pictographic. then they would have written, painted, printed, carved these sign languages into pictographs to express the same thing without having to do the gestures part of sign language why? because now it's written in picture form. it still captures the same meaning and expression.

      I don't reject it either.
God's language doesn't come from Egypt. The Hebrew language survived the Flood.
The origins on languages now spoken are an accumulation of illiterate men who became confounded men. They speaking thousands of languages began forming images and tallying systems to communicate with and amongst each other. (Ref. Tower of Babel)
Sumeria holds the world's oldest fixed recorded language other then Hebrew.
The archæolgical artifacts in tablet form that survived show they formed their language that held a numbering system within a photographic based photo-cyrillic language.
Sumeria was a nation that conquered the barbaric cultures in the middle east, the original Babylonians . This is pivotal to Biblical inerrancy because Babylon is the original enemy to God and His people. They formed the first language other than Hebrew being the original. Yet to the north, In Slavic barbarian mountain regions they had photo-cyrillic. But we see that this was a basis for forming languages, and serves to mirror the process of forming languages.
If you do not even know what language you are speaking, then the natural systemal result is to form it into something that can be communicated visibly. They spoke some language but it wasn't transferrable, the language, but the image based utterance called Phonetics where we get the word Phoenicia. Their language also formed around the time of Babylonian Sumeria, Akkad. And is a culture that describes the God of the Bible. YHWH. Of El as they referred to Him in Aramaic.
El was the widely recognized God of all the Canaanite people and his name is coupled with Yah in some Proto-Canaanite inscriptions. Short for Elohim. But the name of Yah has not yet been found in the Sinai as well. Scholars simply lie about this. For Arabs God's name began as a mistranslation of Elohim.
Hebrew is based alongside the Aramaic language and photo-phoenician , photo-canaanite etc. Very similar products of linguistics. Yet Hebrew survived the Flood. It's a middle eastern language, and different cultures can understand each other bases on the stem roots of some words.
Hebrew has never changed. Only the format in with which we communicate it, called dialects. Adding strokes or dots and punctuation for grammatics.
There is even something called logogrammatic language; this an Asian form of the middle eastern photo-cyrillic that simply uses many strokes of the pen to create a verb noun adjective Word.
Where most language starts from is, subject , verb and object comprisal.

More importantly and what many don’t realize is numerical gematria is never endorsed as a form of hermeneutics not by teaching or by example in the biblical canon and was picked up by the rabbinic schools in Babylon. It’s literal Babylonian mystery religious practice used to glean “secret wisdom” from the text. How many commentaries and teachers tell you this? What’s ironic is it has long been used to conceal rather than reveal the true meaning behind key text in Rev 13 about the number of the name of the false messiah given as an identifier and in the book warning against the mystery Babylonian system

Heiser's opinion is correct on a certain level. "But the natural man does not receive the matters of the Spirit of Elohim, for they are foolishness to him, and he is unable to know them, because they are spiritually discerned." (1 Cor 2:14)
Even the men that walked with Yeshu didn't understand their depth, but "then He opened their minds to the Scripture." (Luke 24:45)
Sadly, man's arrogance blinds them from the absolute Sovereignty and Power of the Breath/Spirit of YHWH. He goes where He wills and He reveals things at a depth beyond the human mind's intellectual comprehension. Heiser is simply telling you HIS best educated understanding. He has the right to his opinion.
When a person has an near death experience they will tell you that communication and understanding is done spiritually. They literally struggle to express their experience because "words simply fail" to describe their experience. The Power of the Father's Spirit is contained IN His originally given letters of "Scripture", the Word He wrote with His physical Finger, and its His Spirit that reveals their true intent and understanding. This is how YHWH ELOHIM/Yeshu, "in whom (eternally) dwells all the fullness of the Divinity corporally", the "Angel and Son of Aloha", can say He is the "Alef and the Tau", the Beginning and the End. Heiser can be completely correct on one level but absolutely incorrect on another. We should seek shalom with all men.

Yes, there are some exceptions in Hebrew where we can see the characters give extra meaning to a word, but this is not the rule. The things hidden from ordinary man, are spiritual things concerning God which can be understood only by those who have 'mind of Christ' - meaning us Christians. This is what 1 Cor 2:14 says. These things are: who is Christ, resurrection, heavenly beings, Second Coming, the cause of death, the importance of sin, mysteries of Paul etc. Things like that can be discerned only spiritually. Nothing indicates that Christians have some supernatural way of understanding Hebrew text.

@@manf9593 This is the main question archeologists ask: who are Egyptians? There is theory that one tribe of Israelites (or Noah's descendant, so not exactly Israelites) wondered south and then split (the Flacon Tribe), one group came to Nile and Upper Egypt and the other to India. Egyptian and Indian history cannot explain how these civilizations acquired knowledge to build stone structures. The just popped up out of nowhere. What the archeologists and historians know is, there was sudden appearance of those cultures without progressive development, meaning someone brought technology. Another aspect is the pantheon of Egyptian and Hindu gods. In short, there is a lot of resemblance between them (neglecting cultural aspect). It could be that those who were responsible for those cultures are Hebrews themselves (or early Hebrews, from Ebr), certainly those who were idolaters (so they brought their gods/beliefs), and that's why to this day there exist enmity between Egypt, India and Israel (in general meaning, of course). Nimrod ('the Mighty Hunter'.) is also known as Osiris, I bet there is Hindu god who can be described in short as 'Mighty Hunter'. And if I am not mistaken those cultures emerged when God was silent for 400 years.

I was a bit disappointed in that Hebrew (paleo or otherwise) is built up from 3 letter roots with added prefixes and suffixes. Without all the short-cuts/idioms added to Hebrew, the basic language is one of the most elegant and simple ones I have ever learned (barely) and seems to be very pattern-centric. The other real interesting aspect of the Hebrew language is that each latter has a numeric equivalent (or two or three) and makes for a rich way to find hidden things within it. People that follow this kind of thinking call it a "Rhema" which is a bit of a mystical idea. A lot of this started with Chuck Missler who wrote the Bible Codes book and actually believed that the bible WAS the book of life and that the names of all the saved where hidden within it.
I don't buy all of that but did for some time. What I would love to know is how old is this language? Was there a written form in the days of Adam/Noah/Enoch? That would be interesting to know.
Another very interesting thing I would like to find is a Bible that explains the meanings of every name. Missler had this meaning of names thing taken from the geniology of Adam to Noah and its well known and pretty cool - If its really true.
I thnk one of the best things that Logos could do is produce a dictionary of all the names (people and places) that are in the Bible and their likely meanings. I think the answer to the question of this video was a bit inadequate.

I agree with you 100% but wasn't all language come from pictographs? Also are we talking about language here or SPELL-ing? Meaning the art of casting a spell or or actual language the art of studying lingua the tongues/mouths/or spoken word?

Most likely not, it wasn't that way necessarily for every culture. Originally there were written languages before the Flood.
      They are all lost.
But for languages after the Babel fall, yes they most certainly did have image pictographic languages or phonetics or even simply markings that they decided we're there words.
It's what we are speaking in right now.
English is a pronunciation of markings. Based on a vocabulary system.
Vocal is the root of our word for vocabulary.
Vocabulary definition. "list of words with explanations," from Medieval Latin vocabularium "a list of words," from Latin vocabulum "word, name, noun," from vocare "to name, call," which is related to vox (genitive vocis) "voice" (from PIE root *wekw- "to speak"). The meaning "range of words in the language of a person or group" is attested from 1753

But actually I do agree with the parts that you mentioned, spell casting is based on using the ability to speak. But no not all languages were based on that side of witchcraft.
But glad that you brought that up.

No sir, the explanation you give is going backwards, you're explaining it backwards. Pictures came first. Then the letters. The Otiot do, indeed, give meaning. This is the only language you can see Yahuahs divine language given to the ancient Hebrews. For example, look at Adam, in Hebrew, which signifies blood. Adam was Father's first man of life, vitality, life blood. Adam means blood. We are not to consume any lifeblood. Blood is holy. This is also why satanic cults drink the blood. Each letter has meaning, each letter carries a positive or negative impact. It's quite an opportunity to expand your horizons and insight into Abbas work of His Word. You won't be disappointed if you give it an honest moment to reveal the secrets Hebrew holds to the student. You won't lose anything in opening thisKings. Afterall, He told us His revealed secrets are the honor of kings that seek them out.

Spoken speech preceded written text. Abraham picked up Hebrew likely when he went to Canaan, where the Canaanites and Moabites were speaking a nearly
      Identical language to Hebrew.

Chuck took some "liberty's" with that. The Genesis 5 name sequence he did maybe suspect. If you root around you'll find Michael talking about this on a video somewhere.
I want it to be true, I am not sure it is.

Whitham allow me to take a moment of your time. Your right that in some cultures pictures came first however in the case of the Jews originally the Bible was passed orally first not pictures. This is shown when the bible is extremely poetic (as memory tool) it's also the rabbi and priests job to memorize scripture from young. In regards to "Adam" the name is more related to ground and specifically reddish ground because Adam sounds like ground (haadama) (cool side note King David is also described as being red or ruddy) it's even more supported when God curses man that from the ground he came and to the dust he returns (very poetic). Next is the blood thing...I believe you should refer to leviticus 17 that hebrews is quoting about law. It states life is in the blood and life is Holy. Notice how leviticus says to cover blood with dust after draining an animal to consume. Also remember how Jesus at the last supper tells his disciples to eat this bread and drink this wine bc this is my flesh and blood. My aim in all of this is to show that the Bible is written to support narratives and emphasize a point done through imagery but not probable that it was drawn to be passed on. And if you still doubt that it was drawn first and not orally passed then written.... do realise that ideas came first but for it to spread it needed to be done orally like story telling because the Jewish nation did not settle until Israel was formed generations after Abraham.

To me, the idea that all of Israel forgot their language in the span of 70 years seems completely preposterous. Forget about the 5/6ths of the total who were of the northern tribes for a moment and assume they forgot. Let's look at the two southern tribes who were taken into Babylon. We're to believe after becoming new slaves, within only 70 years, they completely forgot how to speak, read and write their own language. We must be missing something here. Was there a reset? Mabe they all got beat with a stupid stick? I don't know but something's fishy here.

What are even talking about? They didn't "forget" anything. Paleo-Hebrew Script was replaced with Classical Hebrew Script during the exile due to Aramaic influence. Languages change their scripts over time; Greek and Latin did it. English has done it more than once. Jews still sometimes used Paelo-Hebrew after the exile; the recent Dead Sea scroll discoveries in the Cave of Horrors have God's name written in Paleo-Hebrew. It seems you don't know the difference between a language and a script.

What’s ironic is it has long been used to conceal rather than reveal the true meaning behind key text in Rev 13 about the number of the name of the false messiah given as an identifier and in the book warning against the mystery Babylonian system.
