Join me for a good time in the woods practicing solo bushcraft and camping alone in a tipi overnight. We'll do some good camp cooking with a Mexican inspired bush pot meal and cover many basic bushcraft skills from fire making to knot tying. The tipi I use is the Tipinova from OneTigris and is a good lightweight and waterproof tipi for backpacking and solo overnighter camping trips.

Couldn't agree with you more. I have started my share of fires, and still every once in a while I have a hard time with it. It is nice to see the "human side" of these bushmasters lol
I carry a small amount of fat wood in my fire kit along with a couple of fire straws just in case I run into this same problem. I thought that that fat wood you found looked wet. When you were sawing it it did not seem to be powdery sawdust like dry fat wood. I live in NW Florida so we are use to WET ground and fuel that you have to dry out. (Fire straws = heat sealed 1/3 of drinking straw with a petroleum jelly soaked large cotton ball stuffed inside. Clip the end and light and you have a 7-10 min candle that will dry out kindling. And it weighs nothing to carry 2 or 3 of them.)
Enjoyed the campout video. Connie and I both sure have a hankering for the snow to be gone here so that we can just walk out through the woods on our feet without the need for snowshoes etc. We both loved listening to the Spring bird sounds on your video. It will be some time yet before we are able to enjoy that here.

Since we've been confined I have slept out in my tent for a week. Georgia weather has been perfect for it and I love waking up to the sound of birds

I appreciate you leaving the fat wood fail in the video. I've been somewhat chastised for trying other methods of fire starting other than fat wood. I replied that fat wood is not always available, nor does it always work.

I would commend you for know and using every resource available and it is also good to use multiples at the same time. I should have made a bird nest to begin with and added the fat wood in there as well. I could have ventured back into the swamp are and gotten a little river birch bark also and ensured a first run success. I have never seen fat wood do this before but you learn something new every trip. Thanks for your your time and interest Shawn!

The other day I took my nephew outside to show him how to gather firestarter material told him to gather anything that wasn't in wood shed. Gathered a bunch including a little fatwood. Couldn't get nothing to infinite, end up using bic. I like the pillow cases idea. Great show

I appreciate you tuning in! Nothing wrong with cooking on the coals too :) I like using both depending on what I am cooking. I tend to use coals for the skillet and slow cooking in a bush pot suspended.

Thank you for showing the fatwood fail, that made me feel much better about my own blunders. It is a good lesson that no matter how prepared you are, there is always the Chaos factor, and works hand in hand with false security. Nice adjustable potholder as well. Corporals corner sent me here. Glad he did! I do have a question for you: i always cook and store food away from where i sleep, so i don't have uninvited guests (especially the ursine kind) stop by at 3am. I've noticed both you and shawn Kelly seem to cook right by where you sleep. Obviously, you both know what you're doing so I'm wondering if you just live in an area with few bears or if maybe you're storing your food off camera? Or is there something about bear safety that im just ignorant of? I'd love to not have to go to all the extra effort if it isn't really necessary! Thanks for the great video!
That's a great question Mark. So in my area there are very few bears. I have only seen one in my county in my entire life. We are starting to have more move into my area as I am told but I haven't seen it for myself. That is why I am more relaxed with food and cooking in camp. Many of Shawn's videos are filmed in Ohio which is the same. There just isn't much of a bear population up there. If I were in an area with a healthy bear population, I would absolutely take the precautions you do. If your area is such, keep doing what you are doing. Thanks for taking the time to tune in Mark!

I like using the summer sausages too, but whenever I do I only cut the outside plastic wrapper enough to get at the meat, but still leave it attached to the rest of the plastic wrapper. Then I just fold it over and wrap a rubber band around it to keep the rest of the meat fresh
Personally I like the longer video. Full of good content as usual. From my childhood, decades ago, I have used the dried out pine hearts like you found. Usually making matchstick sized splinters help with starting and they burn hot. Sometimes they just need a bit of extra heat to get going. Great adjustment you made.
I like that strainer for your 'cowboy' coffee.

looked to me like the fatwood hadn’t quite resonated. It’s a natural process that takes some time to complete. I always throw a small chunk of tested fatwood in my fire kit. It’s great to collect resources from your environment but you never know what your getting. Thanks for the vid. It’s great to have interesting videos to watch while stuck at home. Thank you for continuing to make content to teach and entertain us.

I also have back issues. However, sleeping on the ground seems to be the best treatment in the world for me. I never feel better than after a night camping out on the ground. I guess I am odd that way.

There , is where I love a squirrel cooker or my bedroll cooker . I don't trust strings or cords holding my pots , but I maybe made too many mistakes as a youngster . I've stuck green sticks through many pieces of wild game to roast it over a open fire . Thick sliced bacon was a favorite
A dried, good quality sausage would also pack well or dry cured bacon. Good tip on the dry socks.
