Lomo Effect - Olympus E-PL2 vs Lomo LC-A
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 28 апр 2011
- We got asked whether one could replicate the Lomo effect with a digital camera. In this video, we take a look at the art filters of the Olympus E-PL2(bit.ly/OlymEPL2) and compare it to those of the original Lomo LC-A (film) (bit.ly/LomoLC-A). How will they compare?

My two favorite shows mixed in one, photo-loving delight!!! More of these please... :)
Educational and entertaining. That is what I love about your vids. Great job, keep them coming. I may be older than a lot of your followers but I know what I like. Thanks again for the info comparison.
We are the first to comment, so all those other "first" commenters have failed.

It all depends on what film you use in the LC=A. I've used multiple types, and some produce standard film shots, while others produce a more lomo effect.
hai kai w, i have question about what camera should i buy between SONY HX300 or DSLR canon (like 1100d) ? please make comparison about it..? please because i want to buy it this 2014....
hai kai w, i have question about what camera should i buy between SONY HX300 50x zoom or DSLR canon (like 1100d) ? please make comparison about it..? please because i want to buy it this 2014....
Thanks Mijonju for sharing your art and technics
problem is the film used isn't as saturated, I believe he said he shot portra which has a more low key portrait inclined use but can give street photography a cooled down look. if he had fresh ektar he would get more contrast and tighter grain while retaining the natural look of film and poor quality lenses. Id love to see a matchup with the holga lens on a digital.
actually it was some agfa stuff. they all come out cool. my grandmother used to work in photography industry... she told me agfa is always blue. she was right. :D
dmrl your right... im just such a Kodak person since im from the ny area Kodak is king and stuff but Fujifilm has some stuff I cant pass up in both analog and digital... when will digital rev do the xf1!
If the film used was the one he loaded at the beginning of the video its agfa ultra. Which is probably one of the most hyper saturated films I've ever used. I would assume that his scans are bad.
JmChadillonProduct I agree with you, very poor scans with no contrast and washed down colors!
aurelio laloni He was using expired agfa ultra, that's why.
Hey,I'm a pro photographer & videographer in So Cal....I really enjoy your wok
Great Shows...You've got a excellent narrative voice.Love the lighthearted silliness at any given moment and at the same time giving great info. Really nice shooting of the show...kudos to your cameraman for keeping a 5d in focus while running and gunning....not an easy task!
halofreak4t5 can u suggest any good film?
great episode. Thanks for that!! Really was enjoying it!!
which art filter is he using on the EPL 2? can I use the same art filter in an Olympus EPL 1?
It's very interesting when you review another kind of photography, such as Lomo...I wonder if you guys will, by any chance, make a review of medium format, since I saw kai using a Hasselblad on the vid when he prepared an exposition. It would be nice to see how different it is compared to Leica...or even to Lomo, since some of their cameras are medium format as well. Great Vid Kai...Love to see Lok in another video any time soon....regards from Chile and SouthAmerica!
Fantastic. More please - maybe with a Leica or Fuji digital compact (D-Lux or X10). I actually prefer the saturated colours - reminds me of my dad's photography books from the 1960's.
What was the lens he had on it at first?
Kai + Mijonju + street photography = best youtube video ever!!!
Should you hear two clicks with the Lomo LC-A? Cause mine only makes one
+Jordan Nevin In low light, but you have to hold the shutter release down until the second click.
I thought ' Mijonju' was a girl until he started to speak :O
Same with me :-)
I mean he could be wearing panties still. You never know.
Personally i enjoyed the photos by the film camera, I found them to be aesthetically pleasing
LadyRedPlays I agree.
If you want digital Lomography you should give the Superheadz "Sun and Cloud" camera a try - it's a beautifully clunky little box with a solar panel and a wind up handle - and it comes in black or white! Love to see what you make of it...
I hope you respond but did you edit those photos or is it straight from the camera?
i remember the good old days of photography in 2011-2012 reading lomography articles and bleaching film hahaaha
I remember the good old days snapping with a folding Kodak and making contact prints bigger than most lab prints today.
i remember the good old days, drawing on the cave walls when we had to wait out the homo sapien raids.
And Pro cameras still being decent instead of pandering to overindulgent fad BS and becoming proprietary gimmicks with idiot features for people who don’t even buy pro cameras and just sit on forums all day pretending like they do.
Where do you ge the lenses for the Lomo?
this is why we subscribed to DR. great video like always
@Bader88 thanks for the support ;)
Question:
Is there any filters or software that can create this lomo effect?
this is such a beautiful episode. i think mijonju should have used cross-processed slide film for a better comparison.
If Olympus filtering is more subtle like VSCO, then we can get something similar to Lomo. Film is only matter when printed, Fujifilm does it well.
Is it possible to view the full format pictures? And which filter is Lomo? popart?? thanks a happy new year ... Cheers
Where can I find lomo efect in the menu of e-pl2?
Just a thought...
The Oly E-P2 also has the Cross Process Art Filter setting....so it's a better digital Holga than the Oly E-PL2.
awesome video as always!
Where do you get the belt buckle mojunji was wearing??????????
He should of increased the iso to gather more light on the epl2. It would of looked more similar to the film camera.
They should of checked to see the iso settings were the same for both cameras and used similar lenses.
this is really interesting to me, is there other digital cameras with lomo effect?
kind regards, Jennifer
@Mijonju wanted to ask, what lense is that on your LCA? do that lense need a special mount?
Lomo or not, most of Mijonju's shots look like my auntie's holiday photos...
could someone explain what vignetting is please, other than that, the L-CA was better!!
@sosvocaloid
they use a 5d mark2 with a 24-105 L lense
Is there lenses in his glasses?
dude, the girl in the background on the right at 00:24 can shake it, woo - anyway, so what is lomography exactly? it just seems to be vignetting with saturated colours? or am I missing something?
Are there camera effects or filters that could produce the lomo effect?
Nice vid, crazy comments.
Anyway, I hav the EPL2 and like it. Using the filters (w/ moderation) is fun. The nice thing too is u can see the effect of the filters in realtime on the LCD or optional VF2 before taking the shot. With the 17mm (used in the vid) or 20mm pancake, you hav a small, unobtrusive system. If you want full manual focus, or aperture control via lens, attach a manual lens + adapter; prefocus and shoot away without waiting for the AF.
Please do a vid of the Nokton 25/0.95!
I follow both ur shows, I thought this was really fun !!!!
Hahaha it was wierd seeing you two together :o
FINALLY! DRTV You did it! :D
Like the digital one better!!! But can you change the Lomo FX on the Olympus??
Just as you would do on the analog one, by changing the film.
isn´t that the LCA+, the new one?
Not a big fan of the Olympus photos, but they both have their pros and cons.
Where did you get Agfa film??!!??!?!
the lomo makes some great pictures, and the olympus definitely doesn't really get close. but why get the lomo if you can also just get the olympus, take the picture without effect and do everything in post? you can make even greater pictures than a lomo could, without the film hassle. right?
Is there any modern day/ digital cameras that to kind of like a vintage effect? :D
Amazing video! Really nice!!!
Film is all part of the lomo experience! It takes knowledge and good timing to get good shots with a lomo camera and the film makes it all the more challenging!
Why does everyone argue on some ones video, its so sad, anyway good vid digitalrev!!!
What's that viewer in the hotshoe good for?
Another great video!
@dawingster
It's hard to hit something so thin. Specially when it's moving about in a suit.
Whenever I go to HK...I go hunting for you guys...I've tried Causeway, Central...the places I recognize in your photos...but I never ever see you guys TnT
What film was he using?
What is good about AGFA film?
If I use digital filters, then I'm choosing the appearance of the pic... with my LC-A, the camera and film choose it. I get the effects, but often am surprised by them - which would never happen if I was selecting them from a menu. I like those digital pics. But like I say, there would be no surprises. Anyway, there's a time and place for both!
realy liked this one!! Another view on photography. Very good!!
why not put a holga lens on the epl-2?
probably cheaper then buying a lomo LC-A
What is that lomo-thing anyway?
i've got olympus E-5(which has the same feature with E-PL2) and got LOMO LC-A, and I think they cannot replace each other.
When Mijonu is in front of his own camera alone in his bedroom with camera-fridge he talks a lot. But in this video and the canon 1100D he seems like a shy guy.... and ofcourse Kai isn't at all.
In one of Mijonju's video he said that he speaks 5 languages fluently, I wonder what Kai thinks about his cantonese.....
Nice Video
Greetings from Holland
i've been dying to get me a lomo camera but this olympus camera def looks sick, im thinking about buying one.
did mijonju get alamby at 6:04!?
When's Analog Rev coming?
I like the lomo pictures better. After 10 years of digital photography I found my way back to 35mm film, bought 5 old rangefinders from the 1960ies and 1970ies last week, loaded them with Ilford black & white films and and went shooting over the weekend. I didn't have that much fun with digital DSLRs, Bridgecams, mirrorless and premium compact cameras in years.
@DigitalRevCom You´re on the German main-page with this video! congratulations :P
LOVE Mijonju!!
I haven't seen film getting loaded in like 11 years. :D
How about those Holga toy cam lenses for Nikon or Canon DSLRs.
what breed is that dog someone? ? ? ?
@SuperHolybasil that's just like saying that classical music and electronic music is not music
just because there's now an easier way to get lomo shots (without the use of film basically) doesn't mean it's not art
Wohoo, Mijonju!
@sosvocaloid somtimes an eos 60d with the 24-105 f/4L
You couldn't be more right. People slating these people that are interested in the whole 'low-fidelity' photography are just jealous because they aren't having as much fun with their boring, perfect, unison looking photography that they edit in Photoshop because they can't take a decent picture to begin with.
So what's a lomo effect? Or lomography for that matter?
So what's a lomo effect?
The final answer you gave was perfect, you could have mentioned the yashica though.
i love this episode. it's really entertaining.
@Mijonju Oh Mijonju you used the 25th anniversary Lomo camera !! btw best 2 shows on the internet keep it up... and don't pay attention to those freaks.
@Mijonju I still have my Lomo and I love it! ЛОМО!!
From the thumbnail, I thought it was garcia.. But this one was awesome! :D
@aha23451 Wow, so honored :) a light bow to you sir :)
I wonder if one could turn down the saturations afterwards in Lightroom - although that defeats the principles of LOMOgrahpy
@Migonju Is that a Leica Belt buckle? Photography nerd for the win!
it's mijonju!!
This vid feels like accidentally finding a treasure to me
my camera for lomography is a zenit 12s with fotosnaiper grip and another zenit 11
PLEASE look into diana f+ adaptors and lenses for a dslr :3
I've yet to get my hands on an actual Lomography LC-A but I'm pretty sure someday I will.
Well they replaced it with the LC-A+. So you still can. I like the Diana F+ better though. 120 ftw!
@cwyeung912Just wanna show a more natural side to the lomo, because you can Xpross any camera and get the same VIVID effect, not just the LC-A :)
Neg film has a very large dynamic range which tends to hide vignetting a bit. If you shot that Lomo camera with slide film you'd see a lot more.
@thedato IKR?! Probably because of the jpeg compression or something
kai cursing in canto at 8:58:: LOLZ!!
keep up the good wrk DigiREV!
@Jennifer8Music Cameras should be small, quick and nimble for this. Sony, Casio and Panasonic all have quick auto-focus. A tilting screen, to shoot from the hip is a real plus. The new Casio Exilim TRYX tilts in almost every angle. The only issue is that, at 21mm (ultra wide-angle), it will be too wide for some shots. Distortion - especially with close-up faces. It is the only thing out there that meets all the criteria though. For me, EPL-2 is too big for this type of photo style.
I think you'd be off better shooting your phone around with an app, because there are some that have impressive filters. - I don't think shooting a P&S film camera is worth it unless you just get a good quality camera and film that you like. "Lomography" might be fun, but is not worth bothering with because you can get really similar effects with a phone in the recent years. Not even using a digital standalone camera...
@pagalidis So? Whats your point?
