  • Come along with us as we visit Burghausen Castle, the longest Castle in the world (1 km). Some sources say it's also the largest castle in the world. The castle is located in Burghausen, Germany, right on the border with Austria in the state of Bavaria (Bayern). It is everything you'd hope a castle would be! It feels like you're stepping back in time to when knights, lords, and ladies lived there and defended the city. Did you know Germany has more than 20,000 castles/fortresses/palaces? WOW! So it will take us many years to see the most famous ones, but we are HERE FOR IT!
The Altstadt of Burghausen is so beautiful - it reminded us of Vienna. Pastel-colored buildings that look like they've been perfectly maintained since the 18th century. We do try Spargelcremesuppe for the first time as well! The kids had Schnitzel and pork sandwiches. You can schedule a tour of the inside, and we want to go back to do just that.

Thank you so much for all the work you do documenting your adventures. I hope the kids don't get bored too soon with all those same "ol' boring historical stuff".
Should you ever go down the Rhine river, I highly recommend Burg Rheinfels. Another beautiful castle, with a hotel in it. Sure, it ain't cheap, but for a night it is an awesome experience. If you can arrange it ahead of time, order a Rittermahl, a Knight's Evening Meal in their traditional dining chamber, possibly even with one of their bards telling stories.
The views along the Rhine are awesome with two other castles visible in the distance, and the Lorelei rocky plateau with its mythical siren luring river sailers to their doom with her enchanting voice. The most amazing combo would be a night or two in the castle during the "Rhein on fire" festival with fireworks up and down the river.

Why are there so many castles in Germany?
The country consisted of many small and large principalities. Sometimes even the church was the sovereign.
The borders had to be fortified and guarded. If it was not possible to keep peace through marriage (for which the daughters were given to other families) and diplomacy, then war often ensued. Many died in the wars.
The peasants had to pay taxes, deliver food and do work for the princes. The castles were often cold, only one room has a fireplace. Few of the windows had simple panes of glass. Rubbish was simply thrown over the walls. A well in the castle was important.
It wasn't as nice as with W. Disney.
I am glad that today Germany is no longer divided into such small principalities, that it is a democracy, that there is peace and life is easy .

When I see such old buildings I think about the people who did this. How did they cut those stones? How did they get them up there? And all of it was done without the tools and machines we have today. There are work techniques that are forgotten nowadays, that means if you want to reconstruct such old buildings - the wood work, floors, coulored windows, paintings - you're up to a lot of difficulties.

Thank you so much for showing me this beautiful place which I did not even know (before I start feeling too ashamed about that, I'd like to add that I've been living in the northern parts of Germany for all my life and have not had the opportunity to see all these beautiful places so far). But you can't see each and everything anyway, can you? So I'm all the more grateful to you. You're right - that's just the thing I have in mind when I hear the words 'castle' or 'fortress'. You showed so many details, it felt like just the second-best thing apart from having been there in person. The castle itself is stunning, but just look at those picturesque cottages lining the castle walls outside (timer 9:59). Have to be quite ancient either. For servants maybe, in times of old? And nowadays? Sooo interesting.
And thanks also for introducing me to the word 'portcullis'. It's never too late to learn a new piece of vocabulary ... not that I expect to use it sooo often in everyday's life :-)

    Hallo!

Yes!! We really want to go but we haven’t been able to buy tickets online. Can we still go without tickets? And I feel like it will be so crowded that it might be tough for the kids.

@@MyMerryMessyGermanLife Tickets are available only at the entrances to the castle.
It will be definitely crowded, but they take care that it's not overcrowded.
Your kids will love it, knights warriors ladies & lords, open air music and markets, delicious food, met , and all kind of crafters, your family will love it 🤗
It`s very children friendly by the way !
If you like to costume yourself (lots of people do it) than you will get a discount for the entrance tickets

Great video! (- again) I'm so glad you share your exploring adventures with us.
I wonder when your kids will say " oh no, not another castle/fortress!" There are so many cool places in this region. Like Kevin, I couldn't get enough. We took our daughter to so many, so it'll likely be in your future, but as you inserted, schokolade eis sure helps keep the mood!
BTW, how's your German driver's liscence project coming along?
Oh and Happy 4th of July!

Thank you, Connie! Yeah the kids are telling us already they don’t want us to take them on more trips! Yes, schokolade eis helps A LOT! That’s awesome you were able to take your kids to see castles, too.

Your kids remind me of my 10-year-old self, when my parents would take me and my brother on trips and hiking tours like that in different regions in Germany (such as the Harz mountains, Eifel mountains, Vogelsberg region etc.). My father loved to explain just as Kevin did. And everything felt magical and fantasy inspiring. I'm happy for your kids you show them around like that. I am from Germany, but I've never heard of that Burghausen before (there are many other towns of the same name throughout the country). Looks very pretty! Great choice of music!

I think Griffin would have made a really really good mediaval Knight :D Kudos to him.. PS: The people that are tuning those big church flutes when they are real earn in the 100k+ area :D Its crazy to tune them with perfect hearing and it takes plenty of hours for each pipe :D My old trumpet and guitar teacher told me that :D fun fact on the side. You always have those big flutes in churches all over the globe, but tuning them is a really really interesting job.

Yes Griffin would’ve love to have been a knight! Wow that is so cool to know about those who tune the organ pipes! 100k a year! Such a specialty.

You can also hike up on the Austrian side to get a panoramic view of the whole castle. Did you get to see the huge lake on the other side of the castle?
