I'm working on emigrating to France in a year or two's time and they have an excellent health system - albeit somewhat underfunded - though not as badly as the UK one has been ... Thankfully - unlike Maigret I have little need of the medical profession .. 70 percent of charges as with any French resident will be taken care of by taxation and social charges and once I get my state pension I will benefit from a reciprocal arrangement with the UK - - but most French people pay supplementary insurance that runs from approx 25 to 75 a month - and the more expensive policies literally cover stays at spas like Vichy ! The French love their woo woo medicine...
What exactly does that mean ? You suspect they might these days want to add a disclaimer about "crimes of passion" and a suggestion that smoking tobacco and glugging wine and spirits like Maigret and other "defective detectives" is not recommended ?

I read Maigret books from the library and watched Rupert Davies as the Inspector on black and white tv. too.
