I'm glad for you man. It feels so good to receive something dope in the mail. And what a surprise it was! Nice work on this video (videography and thumbnail wise). Its cool to see an animator doing what you do on RUclips.
Can you talk about your journey in the animation industry ? Like how did you start ? How did you learn animating ? How much money you spent and earned ? Your first commission and how did you gain customers ?. I'm not native but i hope you understand what i mean
thanks, this just confirmed my choice of getting a Surface Book 3 for 3D CAD use as well as doing ideas and concepts sketching and some video/audio editing
I have a Surface Pro 7 and I love it since I got it--- it has served me very well with all my creative work the only thing that was a bit lacking is the way the pen behaves with drawing software. So I actually bought a Wacom tablet for that but till I got the tablet I was still able to do most of the work. I wish Microsoft could send me a gift like this too! haha thanks for representing us as artists to the tech world - I hope they can improve these issues!
The surface pro with the kickstand is much more comfortable for drawing imo. But after getting an iPad Pro I have to say the Apple pencil feels better than any drawing display I've used.
Completely agree with your closing. I bought the SB2 when starting my animation degree, I only felt comfortable using it for rough drawing. Anything that was going to be a real product would not be done on the laptop. If you need a laptop you can get a decent laptop and a cintiq for the same price, it just won't be as portable or convenient.
I’m surprised you had that TVpaint issue. I had a surface pro 3 at my old job, and I had no issues with it running tvpaint 10 and 11. My only issue was the general pen stuff that is across all software, and that’s just drawing linework tightly. If you want to have TVpaint on a budget on the go, the Samsung Tab S6 lite is performing way beyond expectations. Getting it animate anything clean beyond 3 minutes is asking too much, but a 10 minute clean animatic is within limits, and then you just wrap it up on your more powerful device at home. The Wacom pen on is fantastic too
Microsoft Surface Book 3: geni.us/6lchM XP-Pen quick access keys remote: geni.us/iHpg Wacom Cintiq Companion 2 / Mobile Studio (what I compared it to): geni.us/7mqdLgs Thank you Microsoft!
I'm just using my Mac for animating in TVPaint. I also have a Wacom tablet without a screen and it's perfect for me. 100% portable and comfortable to use. Though i don't know how well it would handle large music videos, but so far it's worked like a charm
I've had the same pressure issue on older Surface devices (not all apps supported pressure out of the box). It just required finding and installing the right driver to fix. :) Try looking for Ntrig / Wintab surface drivers. Also: hell yeah TVPaint!
Hi, I have yet to finish watching the video, I just wanted to give a couple of advice as a former 15" Surface Book 2 owner (plus several other Microsoft and non tablet pc's). For TvPaint: being an old software it probably uses Wacom's Wintab, so you might wanna try downloading and installing the Surface Pro (4 if I remember correctly) Wintab driver from Microsoft. I always used it in Clip Studio. Note that the wintab driver doesn't detect tilt. Photoshop. In my experience brushstrokes tended to be smoother if you set the gpu option in Photoshop to basic instead of advanced. It also somewhat runs generally better with the integrated graphics. Pressure sensitivity has never been good in Photoshop with a Surface Device. Or any other Windows Ink device for what it's worth. You can overcome this installing a great utility called Lazy Nezumi which between other features allows you to vary the pressure curve in Photoshop. It'll be night and day then. Hoping the developer managed to solve the bugs that afflicted it on the SB, but for the pressure curve control it'll work properly.
Any further thoughts on the XP Pen express key pad ? I bought a second hand cintiq pro 24 that didnt included the express key remote, and im considering getting either the xp pen one or clip studio tabmate because the cost of wacom's is absolutely ridiculous in my country.
the xp pen ac19 device your holding is great, the only flaw it has you cant get canvas rotation in photoshop to work by just going in the setup. it needs the F13 and F14 funcion keys pressed wich no one has on their keyboard. fortunately by editing the xml setup file manually you can get it to work. its a bit of work but then you can also rotate canvas with the dial. love that little device
I wish toonboom was for ipad, the android version isn't optimal for mobile, at least the file menu could be prepped. but Rough Animator is very good at least for basic line work. EDIT: I meant to say "TVpaint", not "ToonBoom"
What do you think of Acer Conceptd7 Ezel? I’ve been holding off on buying anything until it’s readily available because I’m trying to get mobile workspace exactly as your video talks about. Thanks so much for making this! Very thorough with the different options
I have a SP4. While I liked the device a lot for its convenience I always found everything about the N-TRIG pen to be really unresponsive compared to wacom or the ipad. I played with the newer surfaces pros in stores and its felt almost the same unfortunately. Haven't had a chance to try the SB3 yet. If they added a kickstand and upgraded the pen it would be the obvious choice for any artist IMO.
I believe the TV issues is caused by something with Windows Ink, I think there was a setting I had to enable for it to work, but I returned my surface the next day
Pretty sure it depends on how detailed it is. Though if you combine everything that goes into a it(storyboard, animatic, cleanup, post), then even one frame takes a much longer time than one would normally think. Don't know what a good answer to your question would be, hopefully he replies.
Hey man love the videos but I have a question, does the 15inch surface book 3 feel really big? I’m getting one but not sure if the 13 or 15 I should get.
Yes all good points. I am more of a huion guy but I need a desktop pc because my laptop just is not strong enough for my huion tablet. What pc would be a good starter
How is you surface holding up a year later? I’ve had my surface book 2 for 3 years and am wanting to upgrade! Should I get this or just stick with what I got?
What about people just starting out in drawling you think sb3 okay..I mean trying to get into digital drawling and really love editing videos and all that..so..hoping it's a good choice for just starting drawling..
I’m only just now getting into digital art. I’m 19 so I’m starting pretty late but I am completely committed to it. I don’t have a PC or even a laptop and am wondering what the best laptop for digital art would be. I’m also not sure if I need to get a laptop (a desk PC is out of the question for me) as well as a drawing tablet to connect it to my Laptop. I’m also unsure of the programs to download as well as what programs would be best. I’m currently thinking of getting a Lenovo Yoga C940. Do I also need an animation tablet or a better digital pen? If anyone could help me out that would be beyond amazing, I really am completely unsure of what equipment to get especially as a beginner.
interesting the video but it didn't help me much I don't know if this combination helps me, like these programs give less problems? I can't stand having problems to open animation files anymore, every free program I used had this, I think because the programs the video guy uses are paid for they don't generate headaches so I'm not sure. Who can help me I thank, I did not find the answer on google.
it can be tough when you're not able / willing to pay the price of entry. My conclusions of the surface book are... unsure. I was sent the computer, but if I had to buy a computer, I'm not sure if I would buy one or get something more affordable. However, one thing I can say is that i'm a BIG fan of TVPaint. I back that program for hand drawn animation a lot. And I also rely on the Adobe creative suite for my job as a pro animator.
I have a surface device and I dont know if you have this problem but EVERYTHING is so tiny. Im not sure how to expand them if its possible. Nice review by the way! Glad to see that a surface can be used as an option to animate on the go
@Microsoft please please please please fix the issues with your pen, this could be a much better device if you all fixed it and it would be so much of an easier purchase

Dang!! Animating looks so fun. It’s even better that you can do this and make a living off of animating.
It is! I'd recommend trying it yourself. Worst case scenario you hate it and now you respect the medium even more.
For starting try pencil 2d or flipaclip
Love the effort they put for your unboxing, Damn I'm jealous dude. Nice setup
My broke self bought a tablet 7 years ago.. still the best thing lmao I'm too comfortable with that tiny tablet...

Question:
Have you heard about the acer conceptd 3, 7 and 9 laptops?
Car horns do be honking tho
there should just be a kick stand on the tablet for the wobble
And would you get the new Surface Studio laptop over the surface pro 8 ?
you can always put some support stand behind the laptop so it does not move and have the keyboard available, while working on a table.
You can detach it and fold it, then stand it like a tent so that its like a wacom, then u can just get a $20 Bluetooth keyboard and mouse
Ahh reminds me of the old camping animating vibes :)
