It's really improbable to sit down with a bass and compose something like Bill Evans would do with extended harmony. Bass is primarily an accompanying instrument of jazz. Not a fundamental or compositional one @@cuckmulligan
Great version, thanks for putting it online. Like another commenter said, it has echoes of Debussy. It also reminds me of Satie. I'm working it out on classical guitar, and not trying to play it with harmonics as you can. With an electric bass, the harmonics sound chime-like and magical all the way through, whereas on guitar (even electric), harmonics don't pack the same punch, and I think are better used to add color here and there. On piano, obviously harmonics aren't an option, and your arrangment shows that the notes themselves hold up. It's funny that it's a piece that almost certainly wouldn't exist if Jaco had been a piano player all his life (because it's easy to see how the melodic lines suggested themselves once you start plucking harmonics on an electric bass), but it sounds great on piano anyway.
For your misinformation, artificial harmonics are possible on the piano - just like overtones can be achieved on more or less any instrument. I wish somebody would do a piano cover of Portrait of Tracy with harmonics respective to the original. It's not impossible to achieve on the piano (see Leonard Bernstein's demonstration in his Harvard Lectures 'The Unanswered Question', part 1 I think).
After more than a year on bass I can play it how I think it sounds but it's easier on piano. On bass the harmonics have to be perfect, press the sting to hard and it'll sound awful, too light and you won't hear it etc
It takes years...to have a good touch on a piano. I often hear from electric guitar and electric bass players..."piano is an easier instrument to play"..."piano-playing is like typewriting"..blahblahblah. OK SO...PROVE IT.
Because of watching this video like 10 minutes ago I played it again on bass and just as I finished my dad yells at me to shut up... BISH IMA START SWINGIN
I dont think anyone here is saying that piano is an easier instrument to play than bass guitar. However, this song is an easier piece to play on piano, as it was originally written to push the physical limitations of what was possible for a bass guitarist to actually do with their hands. Some of the harmonic chords in this song are outright impossible to play on bass guitar for most bassists, as the chords require freakishly large hands like Jaco Pastorius had. On piano the piece is extremely simple, as it is transposing an instrument with a MAXIMUM of four voices onto an instrument that can voice up to 10 simultaneous voices. So yea. The point is this is easier on piano than bass.
Curiously enough the left hand sound of your piano reminds me a lot of the actual bass sound of Jaco. The whole thing is just slightly out of tune and it gives the piece this special taste. Thx so much for sharing!

Just unreal. The fact that this was played on electric bass seems unfathomable… there can never be another Jaco
Too fast? He didn´t say it was a perfect replication of Jacos bass piece. A cover can be whatever you want.
Exactly.
Especially a free jazz piece with no strict timings
Playing a "cover" exactly like the original artist is pointless. Then you might as well just listen to the original recording. Peace.
Plus jaco plays it pretty fast in some love recordings
Haha..love recordings..spell check got that fucker right
We realise it's really a true jazz peace of music once it's played on piano
lol we alreasy knew from the orignal but i get what you mean
I think this was clear since the fact that this was a SOLO bass piece
...do you not thing electric bass is capable of jazz? so baffling
lol fr these mfs aint never heard of eberhard weber?@@cuckmulligan

Nerds!
Amazing hearing it on piano. Well done.
Pastorius composed a piano piece by nature but with a bass. Such a music genius.
Amazing performance btw! Dynamics, time, everything…Totally nailed it.
This is incredible. My jaw is on the floor.
Fantastic. I tear up thinking of jaco
ridiculously beautiful compostion... thank you for bringing it into a new context here

You nailed it..beautiful..great job,,interesting upload date..9.21.14..27yrs to the day of Jaco checking out..

Yes, just push the buttons. We dumb people also need an easy way to express.
0:52 how to play
Perfect, but much too fast.
Matthew Karas lol
ikr way to fast
It’s only a tiny bit faster than the original.
Missed one note at 1:39 and you are playing too fast.
Josue Pires yeah way too fast
