When he’s singing lyrics, she is harmonizing. When she’s singing musics, he’s harmonizing. It reminds me very much of a couple trying to communicate and failing. She’s crying out and he’s not listening, and he cries out and she doesn’t listen. Not sure I’d that was the intention. But it pulls my heartstrings for sure.

This was something we studied im school called Call and Response. A lot like Newton’s Law of Gravity “for every action there’s an equal and opposite reaction”. Or even deeper kind of like a yin and yang feel.
Always been obsessed with songs that have this, not dependent of the genre. But even the Flowers Duet by Lakme was based on this causality of life.

I always looked at this song as a conversation between two ex-lovers that bumped into each other years later. They both go back and forth at a civil, casual tone. As they continue to talk, emotions flare and they begin to yell. It almost feels more like a 4 min play, than a song. Beautifully done

I think what Kimbra was doing with her hands is particularly interesting given this is a live performance, it's like how a cat uses her tail to keep her body in check, Kimbra is keeping her vocal control and emotional interpretation using her hands --- it's not for us, it's for her and the music.
I love when an artist is there to perform the music without concern for how she is seen, the honesty of her body work becomes entertainment because it's raw and not for show, but there it is and we see it and we feel as connected to the music through the body language of the performer as the performer herself is connected to it.

It's a shame that this is the only one of Gotye's songs that most people have ever heard. The first time I heard it I immediately thought, "I don't know who this guy is but I'm going to find out because he's the real deal." So I searched him on RUclips and two hours later I think I finally came up for air. I ended up purchasing all 4 of his albums and listened to them pretty much exclusively for 3 or 4 months. And as much as I like this song I probably wouldn't even rank it among his 10 best after hearing everything else he's done. I truly believe he's one of the most gifted artists of our generation and he's deserves a lot more recognition than just what he's received from this one song.

The difference between great music and pop music is usually one thing, a worm. More specifically, an earworm. Pop music usually only contains an earworm and is mostly devoid of anything else interesting. Great music is usually deep and moving, but without the worm on the hook. Every once in a while the two coincide, and a piece of great music with a worm on a hook is created and sometimes it catches a fish. How big of a fish is purely up to chance... and some skill, but mainly not completely in the control of the artist or fisherperson.

I love this song because it's told from the narrative of the male intially, whom we are meant to sympathize for. His former love interest is painted as indifferent not having a heart. Kimbra's part fills in the second side of the story, which lyrics show the guy is no angel and was most likely a cad. I like in the context of this song it simple shows the complexity of any relationship, that there are two sides to every story.

Another great job, Beth. This song caught everyone’s attention because of the the lyrics, the unusual voicing and instrumental setting, and the video. Like “Call Me, Maybe”, it has also been the basis for many song parodies, quite a few quite imaginative.
I must say that your look this morning (my time, at least) was refreshing. I got the feeling that you had just finished your morning cup of tea (or coffee?) and this was your first video of the day. I remember telling my wife of 37 years back when we were dating that she didn’t need a lot of makeup (or any, for that matter). I feel the same way about you. Your look is pure, just like your singing voice.
Keep up the good work. I almost always learn something, and I also enjoy seeing you get happy or rock out to songs that I know and love.

I find it sad that this is the only song he’s known for. I get that he’s an Indie artist, and most of his music just isn’t of that popular sound, but man. He’s so talented, and people really should go listen to some of his other songs- Heart’s a Mess, Eyes Wide Open (unfortunately still very relevant, and more so with every passing year), State of the Art.... he’s got a lot of good music.
He’s an indie artist who just happened to have one runaway massive hit, but there’s so much more to his work. He’s so creative, a musical genius even- and used the Musical Fence in outback Qld for one of his songs- who else would do that?

His work is alright. The thing is that his albums are a mix of styles and all sorts of experimental, weird tracks. It's not for everyone and in this case, it's understandable one of the many, different songs he's put out, hit harder than the others.

Not true, he hates fame and being on stage. Also doesn’t care for the money. His work is all great, but this is one that stuck and stuck HARD in the public and I bet you he doesn’t like that this is what he’s known for, or that he’s so well known too. My analysis of the meaning of the song is different than most. There are 3 individuals depicted here. He and 2 women. He sings about the first one in his opening stanza. He told himself she was right for him but still felt lonely in her company and that's an ache he still feels to this day. He got addicted to the sadness of knowing it was going to end and when it did she promised they would still be friends. She lied, she just wanted to get away from him. Why? When they broke up she did everything she could to distance herself from him. He begins whining about how unfair and hurtful that was. He tries to comfort himself by saying he doesn't need that aggravation.
Enter girl number 2, Kimbra. She got involved with him after his breakup with girl number 1. At this point, they have already separated. Why? He kept screwing her over and making her believe it was her fault. This is probably the same reason girl number 1 dumped him. She didn't want to live with someone like that. On top of that, he said he could let his breakup with girl number 1 go and she "wouldn't catch him hung up on somebody that he used to know". She could read into the words he said that he obviously could not. So he dumped him too.

  • @Aengus42

You mention Australian style... I first came across it with Men at Work's album "Business as Usual".
There's a track on there called "Down by the Sea" (the best track on the album). You can hear that open, relaxed yet powerful Australian sound from 1982!
If you find that track & wonder what "yonnies" are it's an Australian word for a pebble that's just right for chucking. Not too big, not too small and a nice shape for the hand.
That's how it was explained to me.
I'm off to find the album version of Down by the Sea. It's absolutely beautiful!

Here are a few songs you should definitely check out and possibly breakdown. Enjoy.
Deftones- knife party (live at stgogetslouder 2015) multicam. (The singer keeps great vocal control while involved with the crowd)
Deftones- when girls telephone boys (08/21/09). (Just great harsh screams all around. Curious as to what you think of his technique or lack of.)
Suicide silence- the price of beauty (ft. Danny worsnop) (good example of extreme high screams.)
Suicide silence- unanswered (featuring Phil bozeman of Whitechapel). (Good example of gutterals. 2:07 in that song has come to he called the toilet bowl scream)
Both of the suicide silence songs are a memorial show for the lead singer that passed away. The band invited other singers from metal bands to perform. A lot of emotion.
