  • Connected, grouped building compounds can be found all over the world. In New England, where I practice, the connected farmstead or Big House/Little House/Back House/Barn typology evolved out of a need to create sheltered outdoor workspaces adjacent to the farmstead. The Big House contained living spaces, the Little House contained the kitchen, the Back House stored the carriage and all were connected to the Barn. Buildings were positioned to shield outdoor spaces from northerly winds and gather light from the south.
    In this video I discuss the advantages of deploying a compound structure design concept.

    Hello Eric. I Love the concepts expressed here. I would like to see a follow up video based on this and the whole A.D.U. movement. I myself have a small city lot. And i want to build a A.D.U. in my backyard. My main concern is how to add another building without one overshadowing the main house and the land? The back yard is 37.5 X 47 feet. Setbacks are 10" from house and 4 feet sides and back. With a mature pepper tree in the rear southeast corner .My lot runs East to west and is 37.5' x 112' Main house is approx. 1000 sq, ft.. You have really hooked me on your design ideas. As a struggling filmmaker who is in lock-down myself in Calif. I really love the style of you short films a.k.a. RUclips videos! As you say "I want to make something"

    But I was really hoping to hear different soundtrack. The space between... the tears we cry...but I guess that would get flagged by YT.

    I really appreciate what you are doing with your practice. Letting people in to the various architectural thoughts and processes, it is always nice for professionals to engage with others (students especially)

    Hello Eric, I´m loving your youtube channel. Watching the video that talked about modern wall base got me thinking about how this theme would be applied to the ceiling joints as well. Anyhow, thanks a lot for sharing great things.

    Great video...creating a void by proximity, tension, contrast, scale, etc is a beautiful way to generate emotions inside a virtual space.... when you have two boxes separated by this virtual space people can feel depending on the distance if they are "connected" or "disconnected " without much analysis.

    In another one of your videos you mentioned that you travel or go out doors to get inspiration. Don't you photograph these inspirations? You should think about making a video with nothing more than a series of images and videos all stringed together maybe set to piano music just to give the audience or just yourself a chance to live these inspirational moments. It also might help you to revisit these moments of inspiration in your own videos you make later.

    I love your model and the idea behind separation of buildings but wouldn't this design be much more expensive than a single self contained design?

    • @30by40
      @30by40  7 лет назад +2

      more expensive, yes but cost doesn't (nor should it) always drive design decisions.
      you're familiar with the quote, "architecture is the art of how to waste space" right?
