The one piece of info you should have shown is which run of belt you pluck on the vertical cylinder. Also the app that I have used on my phone to check the belts on my 2V machine is from Gates who make the belts called Gates Carbon Drive. Don’t be put off by it being described in the App Store as a bicycle belt tension meter because it does motorcycles as well and you have to choose when you use it. The other thing I would say is the important point is getting the cam pulleys and the “crank” pulley marks lined up with the marks on the engine casing and marking the old belts to ensure that you have the right number of teeth in each of the three runs on the belt i.e. “crank” to cam, cam to cam and cam back down to the “crank”
Hi. Hoping you're still replying to messages on this video. Very informative. But, I can't figure out where to measure belt tension on Vertical cylinder. Is it between idler and crank? Or between tensioner and crank? I've seen a couple of you tube videos that verify the horizontal cylinder frequency measurment is taken between crank and tensioner. But nothing on vertical cylinder belt. Very helpful video. Hope you get back to me. Thanks. Ross
Hey friend thanks for the long awaited video for the DVT Ducatisti! I've done 3 belts changes on my prior Ducati (ST4S). I'm coming up on my first belt service on my 2015 MTS. This video clarifies much on the topic. I do have a couple questions regarding the exhaust cam on the vertical cylinder. First is what is the diameter of the carbon rod that you're using? I want have some candidates ready before I tear the bike down. Second, I'm doing a belt change only this time. In the case of a valve adjustment, wondering what you use to rotate/set the exhaust cam back into position prior to putting the belt back on.
Hi, Thanks for the comment. I'm glad you found it helpful. You can easily rotate the rear ex cam with your fingers in the same way you can with other Dukes. I think the rod is somewhere around 9mm od. When I next get one in I think I'll spend a bit of time making a proper holder on the 3D printer :)
This sort of remind me, Triumph Bonneville and Tiger , if you line all the markings up when it's at TDC, when you turn the engine, I haven't the exact amount of revolutions in my head, but it in the ballpark of 730 revolutions before all the markings, TDC oil pump and camshafts align, which made many motorcycle mechanics wanting to scrap the bikes 😅😂
Thanks so much . Can I just put the belts in the same place with the cams and count the teeth? Then for the tension do the TDC of each? Then torque all good? Thanks so much again
Superbike Surgery Ltd it all made sense to me Jim, I had to laugh when you said “If you don’t understand two rods on one pin, don’t do your own timing belts” 😂

Hello, thank you for this. I've got plenty of experience of working on japanese bikes, but about to take on changing belts on my monster 1200S for the first time. This should come in very handy. Sorry if it's obvious, but when you're spinning the crankshaft looking for TDC, how do you know the TDC is for the compression stroke and not the exhaust stroke?
Removing the spark plugs does two things: Make engine easier to turn (always turn forward) and allows you to feel air coming out spark plug hole only when you're on compression stroke. Easy peasy.

Cam angel spelling might be wrong but I think the German for cam shaft is knockenweller thus the KW I only sort of know this from the days of the old Norton double knocker
So what you're saying about the pulley driving the timing belt is, it's not turning at a 1:1 ratio with the crankshaft. There must be a gear reduction from the crankshaft to this pulley, maybe to make it larger in diameter so the belt does not wrap too tightly around (timing belts have a limit on how tightly they can wrap around pulleys). However, the net gear ratio from crankshaft to cam pulleys (driven pulleys) has to be 1:2, as for all 4-stroke engines. Is this right?
LOL, when the title came up I thought "Fantastic I can share this on our Advanced Motorcycle Facebook Page" then the first word was f**k! Great video though, I've always been intrigued about valve checks on a Ducati. Thanks :-) Oh and you're defo not a bell end ;-)
Great vid, very informative. It seems the way bikes are going only guys like you who have the proper tools will be able to work on them. Are you able to turn off the service light on new Triumph bikes? From what I here it's, main dealer only tool?

@@SuperbikeSurgeryTV dealer tool @ dealertoolcouk.ipage.com/ sell a tool to sort triumphs out, lot cheaper to. keep up he great work mate, dont own a duke, own triumph though
Great video! Thanks for sharing your experience. Quick question: do I understand correctly, that variators are locked (not moving/rotating) on camshafts when the engine is not running? I've heard different opinions on that. Some says that you need to use camshaft locking tool to keep the camshafts in the correct position and then rotate the variators on the camshafts to line up the dots on the variators to be flush with the "head flat surface". Based on your video this is not the case. Do you know if this is the same for MTS 1260 engine? Thanks!
I don't know if the MTS 1260 IS exactly the same. As with most things Ducati there's lots of opinion but very little fact. The variators are held in position with oil pressure. If you hold the cam and apply constant pressure with engine off you could move thr variator but not that easily. This however is completely irrelevant to changing the belts. If anyone tells you that you must hold the cams with the Ducati tool ask them exactly WHY, they won't be able to give you an answer other than because "Ducati says so" As per the video you are only interested in the relationship between crank and variator position. Thats why its important to lock the crank the whole time so you have a fixed reference point. What the cam is doing under that cam cover isn't important!
Haha... ‘no, fuck it, were all friends’..... hilarious. Good video, although at the start I thought you were going to have a meltdown 🤣🤣🤣 Love the Ducati videos especially 👍🏻👍🏻
Never did like belts since I watched a belt under a strobe light the belt would have a standing wave at various rpm which is not great for holding a steady timing like a gear or chain would admittedly this was on various car engines but the same will happen on a ducati, they should have stuck to the bevel drive not a rubber band. I don't think I have found a truck, plant or any heavy duty diesel using a rubber band and control of valve timing is less critical on them than a high speed petrol engine
The one thing I forgot is you don’t realy need the crank turning tool. If the bike is on track stands put the bike in 6th gear, take the plugs out and with just your fingers you can rotate the back wheel to get the cam pulley marks lined up with the marks on the engine casing.
Well done, but I have to just ask, why. Why does a manufacturer rely on a valve actuation system as a branding tool when they didn't even invent it? The valve clearance protocol on these bikes is a nightmare. I've seen people use a guitar tuner app to measure the tension frequency. Was a great idea with 1950s valve springs for Mercedes, but makes little sense today, unless the business plan is frequent service requirements.
Hi my mate has a Ducati diaval and his dealer are saying the belts need doing every 3 years is this correct? I do all my own service work he is not so bright when it comes to mechanics but he’s so scared to let anyone else touch his bike. They want £800 😱
Thats the recommendation, the problem you have is if it isn't done by the dealer or a recognised repair shop you will void any warranty if you have any. The 3 years is a bit of a joke in my opinion if you haven't covered the mileage. That's how the dealers make their money. That big shiny showroom has to be paid for somehow 😁
There's no such thing as a stupid question! It's to ensure the relationship between the crank and camshafts stays the same. Obviously, this can be done with just the marks on the crank and camshafts, but the extra marks are another level of protection against getting it wrong if you're a bit nervous!
@@SuperbikeSurgeryTV ok thanks for the answer! So it's not strictly necessary but another way to make sure you don't get it wrong, I get it now! Thanks a lot for all the good information!
Or you can make one dot on the first sprocket, 2 on the next 3 on the last, make the same dots on the belt, transfer dots from old to new belt, put it on. That tool is so insane, there is room enough for a spring tensioned tensioner, with indicator like on VW,. nothing to take up slack when it gets old.

What's the upside using these belts rather than chain? Just curious because this is a money grab imo having to change these all the time
Jim ...... 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
The one thing I forgot is you don’t realy need the crank turning tool. If the bike is on track stands put the bike in 6th gear, take the plugs out and with just your fingers you can rotate the back wheel to get the cam pulley marks lined up with the marks on the engine casing.
Lots of ducatisti twist 45° never had a problem with them, some on multiple bikes over donkey's years/miles..... 🤔
Superbike Surgery Ltd My thoughts exactly he’s only covering 2k if that. the bikes 2015 and out of warranty anyway.
I feel so stupid, but why mark the belt? I mean it's a round belt, why is it important at all? Sorry for the stupid question.
Wow £500 for a led light and a 50 pence mic and lcd display all boxed up in a plastic case, god knows how they make a profit !!
i only got to 44 seconds you make me laugh already hahahaha
Or you can make one dot on the first sprocket, 2 on the next 3 on the last, make the same dots on the belt, transfer dots from old to new belt, put it on. That tool is so insane, there is room enough for a spring tensioned tensioner, with indicator like on VW,. nothing to take up slack when it gets old.
this guy actually made it MORE confusing and I've already done a few DVT engines !!....my brain was melting listening to him waffle on !
🤣🤣 You're welcome! I look forward to watching your video.
The only advantage the duc has over most belt driven engines is the short runs between pulleys
nice to see yea Jim :-)
Compared to japanese bikes Ducatis look like a mare to maintain.
There are Ducati Dealers and there are Ducati dealers.
