"Chronic pain. You can't live with it. And living without it is dangerous. The United States is in the midst of an opioid addiction epidemic - much of it initiated by chronic pain. When pain is severe enough, it can kill you. Especially if you have a heart condition like I do. So what if opioids change the brain? Lots of things change the brain, like stimulation. I would rather have my brain changed than suffer from very serious pain.

None of the people who talk about how horrible opioid addiction is actually have chronic pain. I have chronic pain that is 24/7, pain killers are the only relief I get, I have tried thousands of other methods none of them work. So I can either take pain killers and risk addiction or live my life in horrible pain never wanting to leave my bed, it is easy to decide what choice I can live with! -_-

I’m with you there. I’m not in crippling pain but I have narcolepsy and all my do is sleep if I don’t get stimulants to stay awake. But I also have bi polar so no one wants to prescribe them for me. Even if they were addicting which for me they are not I’d rather be a drug addict for life than sleep my life away. I might as well be dead at that point. Also I refuse to take medications that make me stupid. I’d rather be smart and crazy then sane and stupid!

I broke my back in two places on two different times. I've had to take opioids for the last seventeen years just to be able to walk. While I had to take large doses in the beginning, through exercise, meditation and diet, I've been able to cut the amount. I've not had most of the side-effects, except my allergies have gone away, and I've never had withdrawal symptoms when I've had to stop taking them. There are many people like myself who use them just like others take blood pressure meds but, because people get a stick up their butt, we have to jump through numerous hoops to continue to get our medications. The more you know.

    • @Siberius-
      @Siberius- 7 лет назад +11

That's pretty awesome you don't get withdrawal symptoms...
My girlfriend takes a lot of pain killers at times and she can get addicted very easily.. then getting off them is fucking horrible.. it's so fucking easy for it to sneak up on you too.. like you need to take them.. but then you get addicted and need to go through withdrawals... the ease of getting addicted and the amount of people who do.. means there are certainly going to be hoops.. but yes I know full well how annoying it is to struggle to get medication.. especially when you throw mental illness into the picture.
Pain medication addiction is a huggggge factor for people turning to street opioid drugs. Which is terrible.

Tom You had your spine broken twice also!? I had my lower spine broken and my neck broken at age 6 when I was drug by my horse and had them both broke again at age 16 when I was helping put up a boxing ring when they accidentally dropped a railroad tie on me. I now have severe scoliosis, very severe disc degeneration, and cysts upon my spine also. I also have Systemic Lupus and it's progressed to the point that it's causing muscle degeneration, bone degeneration, and severe nerve issues.
I'm now 57 and have worked hard since age 12. 7 years ago my body succumbed to the point that I had to the point that I had to go on total disability.
So I COMPLETELY understand what you're saying. I take my pain meds ONLY as prescribed, do everything I can to help alleviate the pain, and the doctors have you jump through hoops to get your meds.
Then they come up with those stupid stories of how their patients just suddenly stop breathing and fall over dead from taking pain meds. I tell them that compared to dying in mind numbing, screaming, agonizing pain, to just fall over dead isn't all that bad.
What are we, the ones that NEED them to do? They are all that keeps me able to cook for myself, to be able to shower by myself!
I've been off of them and didn't go through the withdrawals, just horrid pain and I'm so sick of their "witch hunt". I guess I just wanted to say that I understand and you have my empathy dear.

I see and read a lot on this subject because of that percentage of people who, "Who truly suffer with Chronic Severe Pain every day." Granted, I'd estimate 80% of those on opiate painkillers don't really need them longer than the acute pain they may have suffered via accident or surgery. I've suffered 4-near death accidents since 1978. I broke my neck in 3-places, and suffered spastic quadriplegia from neck down. I was a passenger in a car getting ride to college and driver crashed off a 250-foot cliff, breaking 7 ribs, broken jaw in 3-places, 157 stitches in right cheek to fix lacerations and attach ear, fix eye, and fix. I was hit by a drunk driver 6 years later and broke my neck a second time. I've had 2 major reconstructive surgeries ( 21-hours total for both ) to rebuild, wire, and fuse neck, and finally rear ended at 60-mph by drunk drivers while stopped in traffic on I-95 north. I won't even begin to try and explain the chronic severe pain I deal with every day at 56 years old. If not for these medicines, I'd have no quality of life, couldn't urinate without catheter, couldn't ambulated a little, and would have severe shaking and spasticity all the time, just to name a few things. IMO, these medications can be and have been a god send. I tried all alternatives with little to no success. Been on these 18-years, and they work as described with none of euphoria or highs so often mentioned. I wish the pill seekers, and doctor shoppers would simply stop or get punished severely or at least get help. It makes it damn hard on those that truly benefit from these medications. Wm. ~

Wow, you have had a nightmare of a life and you re still so young. So sorry for what you have been through. I agree with you. I have been living (existing) with a chronic pain condition with pain all over my body 24/7 for over thirty years. I have been on a low dose opioid for a long time. When I have my flare ups, which are frequent, I just can’t function. My blood pressure goes sky high, my blood sugar goes sky high and I cannot take care of myself. Even getting up and having a shower is totally exhausting. When I take my meds, even though they don’t completely take my pain away, I can go swimming, shopping and make a meal. I have tried every other kind of med that my doctor has given me and I cannot tolerate any of them, I get such severe side effects. I’m sure they are just as bad on your body as,opioids are. My doctor just made me try another drug as she wants me to go off the opioids. I had a very severe side effect. I am not going to put my body through any more stress. I don’t know what I will do if she just takes me off them cold turkey. There are going to be a lot of suicides if they keep taking away pain medication from those legitimate pain patients. Big hugs❤️🇨🇦❤️🇨🇦

Its worth mentioning when she says they block pain she means mental as well as physical. From my own first hand experience its pretty 50/50. If your depressed opioids will give you relief 100% I never hear this being mentioned ANYWHERE online. Probably because it gives illegal drugs like heroin medicinal value.

Yikes! I have a chronic pain and joint condition and, against my wishes really, I've been on codiene for almost 2 years now. It's not like it works (whatever little it used to do is now gone with tolerance) but my doctors have been unwilling to try anything else. Part of my genetic condition, along with not being able to produce collagen properly means that painkillers don't work very well on me. At all. I've been to hospital and been give 10mg of morphine; it took away most of the pain and made me feel more alert but overwhelmed at the lack of pain. My doctors were kind of shocked at how it didn't make me sleepy, etc. Anasthetics also don't work very well on me; I wonder if they shared mechanisms or receptors? I'm soo curious, but my condition is so rare none of my doctors can really tell me anything about why things like pandadol, ibuprofen and lower classes of opioids have never reeeeally worked for me, even as a kid. Needless to say, is sucks, man. I need my grey matter! But also, pain is a bitch, especially constant pain :(

Research shows that people with red hair need 20% more anesthesia than other people, but they are also _more_ sensitive to opioids. So don't feel bad about taking opioids if they work better for you. Also, Morphine is an opioid while Ibuprofen is a NSAID. They work differently.

It's inhumane what they have done to long term chronic pain patients that have documented injuries and failed surgeries.Dr become afraid of Goverment controll of their medical practise. The doctors are afraid to perscribed needed pain medication that they know you need but don't want to loose their medical lisceance so they only perscribed gabbepenten and flexeril for pain.I was taken cold turkey off morphine and oxycodone.my pain level got so high raising my blood pressure I suffered two strokes I still have complete numbness on my whole right side.unfortunately my pain is on my left.My having strokes made no difference to Dr. he only perscribed blood pressure medication to try and keep blood pressure under controll. I am pretty much home bound and bedridden with no quality without my pain meds it hurts too much to even think about leaving the house just getting ready to go hurts to much. I've ordered some kratom I hope it helps its my last hope to regain some quality of life.I can't and won't go on living should say just existing in constant pain.

I've had opioids for a synovial cyst, right where I sit, between L5& S1 that was between vertebrae & spinal nerve. I've had surgeries, procedures and all kinds of DRUGS, even together didn't & don't touch the pain. Cannabis is the ONLY thing that gives me any pain relief. Idk why opioids never helped, but they didn't. & yes, they are constipating, which I already have a problem with. I'm 61 yrs. old. It took 2 surgeries to get all the cyst. I still have excruciating pain when sitting, so I spend most of my time when I'm not making myself move, laying on my stomach or left side to keep my weight off my lower back to stop spasms. Im underweight for my height. I have continuous lower back & leg leg spasms when they get started, which is after I'm on my legs moving for too long. I wish opioids helped me, but more so, I just wish Neuroscience would make better, less expensive back procedures for backs that doesn't cause more problems and aren't as hazardous. I don't go places anymore, just too much pain & my constant desire when out to get home back on my stomach again. I order heavy needs online & depend on friends for get perishables for me. just my 2 cents worth of knowledge from my experience.

I'm a chronic pain patient, as well as panic disorder sufferer., I am prescribed, and will continue to need to be prescribed, large, high doses of powerful opiods and benzodiazapines for the rest of my life (right now it's 90mg of Roxicodone and 8mg of Xanax per day each, but I've been on and had pretty much every opioid, benzo, and opiate you've ever heard of, and some you probably haven't even heard of) and I'm fine with that. Am I physically dependent on them? Yes. Will I have to be for the rest of my life? Absolutely (the opioids/opiates will have to get stronger as time goes by, as it's already been 20 years of chronic pain, panic disorder for even longer, so I already have a super, mega tolerance). And so what? I'm fine with that. Without these drugs, I would have no quality of life. Far too many people, including many so-called pain specialists, confuse dependence with addiction; they are two completely different things.
Even if someone wants to do any drug they can think of for recreation, they should be allowed to. A person's own body should belong to that person and it should be each individual's choice what to put in their own body. If every drug was legal and over the counter, there would be far less drug crime, overdose deaths (since products would be of a known, consistent quality and purity), law enforcement and the courts would be able to focus on real criminals like murderers, bank robbers, car- jackers, etc... It would be win/win for everyone.

And 5 years later the govt is not allowing Drs to give people the pain meds they desperately NEED to fully enjoy life.
    For example:
    1) My grandpa(83yo) has had 6 back operations and both his knees totally replaced. He cant get pain meds cuz his Dr is scared of getting arrested.
    2) I have arachnoiditis and my Dr wont give em to me til i am in a wheelchair or laying in bed for 20+ hours a day. I use a walker or cane to walk at the moment if i need to do something. Btw, I'm only 38 and my Dr thinks I'll be in a wheelchair by 40. That's when I'll be able to NOT be in constant pain but the pain will be soo extreme I wont be able to walk even with pain meds.

Oxycodone isn't made from opium. It come from another part of the poppy bulb called the bane. It is very poisonous so they bind a chemical to it to make it lipo-phobic. It then wont enter the brain at all where it would cause a convulsive death.
The major change cited in most research that occurs after a month or two of opioid use is an up-regulation of the number of receptors. This could be significant problem if you no longer can make enough endorphins to them to function properly as neuromodulators.
6 to 8 weeks of the opioid antagonist naltrexone might cause a blockade of endorphins to the receptors long enough for them to reduce in number so when discontinued the natural endorphins become functional again.

These drugs are needed in certain cases. I had a tumor in my abdomen the size of a foot ball. My doctor gave me an RX for Diladad. He told me, "you will get addicted to these, but I don't care". In my illness, I was taking upward of 60 pills a day. If I could stop just one, I would stop it. That happened to be Diladad. I stopped it with the pain was no longer too extreme. How happy I was to take three less pills a day. I do admit, Diladad had the odd quality of making every red light turn green just as you got there. .

I disagree with the law of doctors not prescribing pain medication to people who really needs it and kind of what she's talking about I am in remission of cancer I was diagnosed with cancer when I was 15 years old I am 30 years old now I had a ewing sarcoma in my right shoulder I am a right-handed person I left my right arm this located with seems very abnormal I have a bone popping out of my shoulder my right shoulder blade also sticks out which causes my back and neck excruciating pain I also been in several rollover car accidents is that also have messed up my back I have broken my ankles which I had surgery on but you had put titanium bolts I have a broken bone in my right hand due to the chemotherapy it have left my bones very fragile and weak so they are very easily able to break without my pain medication I would not be able to have a normal life I will not be able to get out of bed or to shower I would not even want to be around people or have a conversation with anybody I would be extremely depressed I am extremely and unbearable amounts of pain every single day of my life since I have been 15 years old I am lucky to be alive thanks to God but what about my medication I feel like I am actually not living properly due to the pain just because people get addicted to these pain medications doesn't necessarily mean that they have pain these are people that are getting high on these medications for absolutely no reason doctor should be aware of this and do better studies and they should not deny the medication to the people who really do have chronic and severe pain daily I know what it means to me when I don't have it and when the doctors don't prescribe it to me it ruins my life it is very frustrating and makes me very depressed and it also it also affects my family has well for me not feeling well for instance my wife for her having to see me being in pain all the time and when I don't have my medication I would be upset and not feeling well and depressed I'm not able to play with my son or want to go outside I want to go to the grocery store or do any type of normal things in life due to the pain that I am in the doctors give me a very hard time getting this pain medication and I believe this is not right it should be against the law these doctors put you on these pain medications and then all of a sudden they tell you is no good for you and then you're going to die that's completely absurd when I was diagnosed with cancer he was treating me with 4 mg of morphine every 15 minutes due to the pain that I was in I had it and very large tumor in my right shoulder they told me that I was going to die still to this day I am not able to use my right hand properly or walk properly my back is in constant pain in my neck and other parts of my body like my legs I think God for this medication and I think the doctors who do prescribe them for understanding the severity of the pain that the patient is going through they rather give you Ibuprofen and some other kind of b******* medicine that does nothing for pain for people like me and I'm more than shorter is lots of other people out there whose bodies are used to taking his medication and not only that that the pain is so severe that normal medication does not work and they don't seem to get that they like to tell you what your body feels as if they know what you're going through as if they feel your pain as if they've been through cancer themself as if their bones are broken has if they have dislocated shoulders and all these other problems as if they live your daily life they do not they should respect the person as a person and consider their circumstances and what this medication means to them

There's no evidence for opioids stopping the uptake or production of endorphins. You failed to mention that not only endorphins but also endogenous morphine (and endogenous cannabinoids) are produced by the body as well. Also, the opioid induced constipation is temporary and limited with people who eat a high fruit and vegetable diet and drink plenty of water. Opioids are a fantastic pain reliever and cough suppressant and if managed correctly, can be taken for years with few problems. The idea that they change brain plasticity has been around a long time with no real evidence to back it up. I will add here however, that although I think they should be prescribed more readily, they should not be taken for granted because opioid withdrawal is nasty and that's not just the acute stages of it. Long term recovery from dependency can be as big of a struggle as giving up alcohol. Those that do end up with dependency generally have some pretty deep seated issues of which addiction is the symptom.

My dad believe that addictions of any kind don't exist at all. I believe he's dead wrong, of course addictions exist. The evidence has shown that addictions exist in several different ways and not just to the things we usually think of when we hear the word "addiction" too. It should be obvious that addictions exist, so why are there people like this?
Great video. I liked it. Keep up the good work. God bless you.
