By '73 they were killing the compression, so had to kill the cam for acceptable low end power. Richard Holdener test the 1970 351C 4v and said it was the most under rated motor ever from any manufacturer. It was rated at 300 in '70 and 285 in '71 but made 360 dyno hp. It made more than the 1970 high compression solid lifter Chevrolet 350 LT1 motor rated at 370! Of course the BOSS 351C with solid lifters mad even more. And by the way for all those "the 2v's are better for the street guys" those giant ports made more torque than the Chevy too! Open Chamber 2V heads will work but you have to fiddle with pistons to get the compression up so you can run a larger cam. The closed chamber 4v's are where it is at for race or street.

Inexpensive port plates fix the 4V Cleveland head ports. Yeah. The problem with the American 2V heads was the horrible open chamber design. Australia had the perfect solution in their quench chamber 2V sized heads :)

@@331Grabber I ran a set of Ported Australian 2V,s, with Larger Valves, same as 4V heads, 2.19 and 1.71, then on same exact Engine tried Unported 4V Open Chamber Heads, hands down the Australian Heads ran Way Better, Throughout the Entire RPM range, Engine felt Way Stronger. But few years later borrowed my Brother's 4V Open Chamber Heads that had Lot's of Work done, had those Port Plates and everything, Car made most Power, the Australian,s felt a little stronger Down Low, but after 4,000 rpm those Worked 4V,s definitely took over, ran a very large Solid Roller with those Heads. But couldn't keep up my Compression with the Open Chambers, compared to my Australian Heads. Me and my brother Never had any Closed Chamber 4V,s there getting very rare nowadays.

@@badass6.0powerstroke10i have a ported Aussie set on a 383 stroker and honestly it did not get going until 5500 RPM and then it was a rocket. If a 2V Aussie head is ported properly and with correct valve work it can scream. 3V heads kill both though I hear.

@@jamesmedina2062 Yes, i heard those CHI 3V Heads work awesome, i never got to try a set out, switched from Cleveland Power to Stroked 521 BBF, my brother ended up spinning some rod bearings in his Cleveland, so he got out of the race car stuff a few years ago, he still holding onto the car, but sold all his Cleveland stuff and his C-6. I'm trying to get him to buy my 521, so i can finally go Aftermarket Block and go 572 or 598.

Bought the last Q-code 351-4V Mach-1 that Mosart & Keller Ford in Houston had on the lot in Nov-73. It was the twin to this one, paint cod 4B. My friends all called it the pickle. The interior was the same color, am/fm 8track, fold down back seat, with AC. Wish I still had her today

My friend had a 73 Mach 1. He said it had the 351 w/SCJ heads. I remember when he had the intake off the intake runners I could nearly fit a tennis ball in. On the street from a dead stop I'd kill him with my stock 90 5.0L notchback 5spd. Until about 100mph and he'd reel me in and pass me. I still love the looks of these Mustangs. Some don't like the styling....I loved them.

What a beautiful car. Those 4bbl Clevelands are dogs down low, but they pick up and scream above 4k. We used to build up the intake runners with epoxy because they were too big. The better choice was always the 2bbl heads. Perfect for the street.

There is no such thing as 351w scj heads. 4 Barrel Cleveland heads and boss 351 heads no such thing as SCJ heads for the 351. They had 428 and 429 scj heads those are for Fe Motors and 385 series Motors respectively.

1985, 20 years old bought a 1973 with 351 Q-code, C-6 & 9 inch for $1,500 in North Fort Myers FL. My test ride was pulling it out of the used car lot & punched it. Smoked the skinny right tire all the way down to the next stop sign. Yup, I'll take it !! Built the motor up some, raced it but life happened & never got to finish her. I'm a Mopar guy, but 73' Mach 1 hands down, favorite car on the planet.

I had a 1973 Mach 1 with a 351 Cleveland but only a 2-barrel carb; it was metallic gold with black trim. It had plenty of power for me, but was not as awesome as the earlier models before all the performance restrictions for gas mileage and pollution stuff. I think it was rated at 266 hp at the flyweel according to a Chilton's book. On the highway, it bested at 13 mi/gal.
