Great review and I love your enthusiasm. I purchased the Freya+ in April and it too came with the stock JJ tubes. I was pretty disappointed to be honest. The sound was REALLY bright, thin, fatiguing and sibilant with the JJs. But OMG, the imaging and the way vocals popped out of record mixes was truly mesmerizing ! I too did a pile of research on the net and ended purchasing a quad set of Sylvania ONS yellow & green matched (2 of each) tubes. Here in Australia I had to import them from Taiwan and they were expensive. Replacing the JJ tubes with these and giving them plenty of burn in the sound loosened up considerably and was much more meaty. The sound is still definitely on the slightly bright side of neutral but incredibly tactile and three dimensional and no longer thin. Unfortunately the Sylvania's also loose a bit of the amazing imaging of the JJ's but they are so much more listenable and musical. One thing to note is my Freya runs insanely hot which living in Australia means I've had to invest in an external fan to keep it from being too hot to touch.

As of 1st qtr, 2023 the freya+. ships with Tung sol 6sn7 as the premium tube. Its better than the JJ IMO, but still a bit too cool and bright like solid state. Sylvania, GE, and Electro-harmonix gold pins (my choice) are all much more tube goodness without being too romantic and gooey. A world of improvement over either JJ or Tung Sol.

I got the Freya+ a few months back and I love it! My system is not huge but I absolutely love the sound I am getting. I pair the Freya+ with the Jeff Rowland 125 power amp and that goes thru Triangle BRO3 speakers. I am using the stock tubes and to me they sound just fine. I have not experienced listening fatigue. At some point I will try some other tubes. I love that Schiit Audio is putting out quality equipment at reasonable prices. Thanks for the video.

. I would think that the Rowland kinda' needs a Freya+. I'll bet the combo is pretty sweeeeeeeet.

New to your channel - Very nice presentation! I purchased a Freya+ as my first tube preamp a month ago. My unit came with the Tung Sol 6SN7GTB tubes. I fell in love with the sound immediately. Best sound I have experienced out of my current gear. I just landed a pair of Sylvania 6SNGT "Bad Boy" tubes. Put them in the gain stage with the Tung Sols in the buffer. WOW🤩 Good news - they are on another level in total presentation! Bad news - they are not cheap🤑! But in my opinion, worth every penny.

They made it with passive and solid state along with the tubes so you have a choice depending on what you're using it for at any given time. For me I'll only have the tubes active while listening to music. The rest of the time while watching RUclips vids/TV/movies it will be in solid state mode increasing the longevity of the tubes. I'm speaking in future tense because I'm waiting for it to be delivered. Can't wait, should be here by Monday 🤞

    Notes:
    1. JJ tubes are really cold and bright. Still, something there preferable in parts to SS mode, like sound stage.
    2. As of 1st qtr 2023, the freya + ships with Tung sol 6sn7GTB as premium sn7, They are nicer than the JJ, but...
    3. I ordered mine and got a matched quad of Electro-harmonix 6sn7 gold pin. Like Sylvania- much warmer and tubey without getting gooey. I don't do vintage anymore, too $$$. NOS or new for me.
    4. I used to have Focal Chora 806. They sound excellent. Slightly warmer than B&W.
    5. You are not that biased on Domestic UK B&W. The overseas models are not as good, and the new "diamond" tweeter ruins it all.
    6. I had the freya S. The + makes music on another level up.
    7. SS mode may be like a RAW format image, stark, vivid etc... But the tubes are like an optimal filter that brings out the best in a slightly softer and warmer way.
    8. I recommend Tube depot in Tennesee. they are on the level and not foo-foo like some places.

      *Splendid: Great to hear!*
We'll be looking forward to your review once you've put in some time tube and cap rolling.
It took Thomas & Assoc. a couple of years to finalise his review.
The V-cap equipped model is more transparent, but I also enjoy the Mundorf SGO Supremes for tonal density and character.
I'm still experimenting, it's just *so* versatile....
I think this preamp in keeping with your channel's experimental vibe;-)
Don't forget to check the coupling cap values.
      Schiit amps need 4.7uf.
For Bryston the standard 2.2uf is good.
Eric's Hifi blog review has a link to the V-cap calculator.
The supplied rectifier and signal tubes are best replaced immediately due to noise issues.
(I prefer lower gain tubes and dip switch settings for my system)

Hi James great video. I am also doing research on the freya+ and own the Emotiva pt1 paired with the a2 amplifier. You and you alone are the only one who has made a comment on how the Freya+ blows the pt1 away. Never having owned a tube preamp before could you please give me a couple examples of what to expect. Just so you know I am running a pair of Emotiva t1+ towers. Also one thing I hate about the pt1 is the slow volume gain!!! Is it like that on the Freya+?
    Thank you.

The tube sound on the Freya is bad. Not at all tube like. Solid state sound is good. Returned. Got the Vincent audio tube preamp. Great sound right out of the box

    • @abxaudiophiles
      @abxaudiophiles  Год назад

Yea, I always refrain from the word "BAD", I actually have the stock tubes, upgraded NOS tubes, as well as run teh Prima Luna DP as my main amp... The Freya+ stock tube sound is not bad at all considering the price, build, and versatility of the unit. Yes, it can be bettered if you want more "Tube" sound, if that is even a thing. I still use the FREYA today and its a great unit.
