🔥 LTA - AERO "TUBE DAC" = Synergy?!?!
I have been an avid CSS fan for awhile. I have built 2TD, 2TDX both towers and bookies, bass modules, 2 SDX10 subs,Tori's, 1TDX wave guide limited and 3TDX with the lower priced premium crossover. Each has represented great value. I have sold all but the 3TDX, wave guides and Tori's. Tori's are used in a bedroom system. Each was a blast to build and I only sold them to make room for the next. Yeah, I lost some money but I had great fun. The wave guides are currently for sale BUT not the 3TDX. My reference speakers are Magnepan 3.7i's and yes they are better in most ways BUT, not in all ways and they now sell for 9k! The 3TDX's perform so far above their price class it amazes me each time I listen. Css, owners are great guys, their service is great and I cannot wait to build their next kit. In the meantime, the 3TDX's are giving me one of the finest listening experiences I have ever had and I am very well seasoned (read old) audiophile. Great review guys!
@@timball4892 Thank you and great testimony. 🙂🙂 I’m with you! These things are a killer value and those 3TD-X could easily be my reference speaker. 🔈
👍 Wuf. 🐻 🍺
Can I see your data on your double-blind capacitor listening tests please?
No…. Just listen for yourself. Simple alligator clips and swap capacitors. Simple. Sometimes you gotta just put the work in…. 😊😊😊
@abxaudiophiles when you know which capacitor is which I'm sure the more expensive one always sounds better to your ears. But I actually have seen tests on coupling capacitors in amplifier outputs and no one can tell the difference when the test is conducted properly.
@@Wizardofgosz - Hey man, We dont get into the standard audiophoolery arguments here... I have sat and had someone swap an alligator clip on a capacitor of the identical value in a simple first order speaker crossover and it was NIGHT AND DAY..... My 4 year old nephew could have called it out.. And I had no clue which one was in and which one was not... And there were cases where the cheaper of the capacitors sounded better in some cases, but 99% of the time, the better quality part sounded and performed better.. For instance, I preferred the $10 NOS Russian military PIO cap over the $80 Jentzen Z we use in our baffles... Cheers.
@@Wizardofgosz I love these arguments. People are funny, if you cook a meal the best ingredients are used, if your building a race car engine or gaming computer or log splitter or whatever it's nothing but the best parts all around, then people argue about capacitor that costs 9 dollars more or 17 bucks more. I don't understand sometimes. Better parts, always make a difference no matter what is being assembled.
Seems to me it would be easy to verify, even if only by a simple waveform comparison, at which time you could also give a hypothesis explaining exactly how the different cap or whatever, affects the objective analysis. So ... Has anyone done that, or the proverbial double blind tests? Links please..? I'd rather not hear poetic proclamations about tonalities and warmth and hyperboles. Look, I'm not saying better components can't provide better sound, but why the hell isn't it *scientifically* shown? This ain't rocket science.. but it could be Audio Science.... (Sighs and wanders off..)
In discussing commercially available DiY designs, completeness demands inclusion of the designs from G.R. Research & Madisound.
Lots of options. I’ve got the LGK towers. Didn’t really make the discussion.
@@abxaudiophiles Did you not like the LGK towers?
@ They are decent for sure. But I don’t think they hold a candle to the TDX series. Gear pairing and room is gonna be key for sure with the LGK… Get em dialed and they can be fun.
I needed a project to keep myself busy while recovering from rotator cuff surgery so i went down to the CSS headquarters and picked up the DIY 3TDX kit minus the cabinet flat pack. ( yeah maybe not the best size speaker for a one handed build!) I used 13 ply birch for the box and a 1-1/8" solid cherry front. I had been saving the cherry for a different build and it ended up being a little short. I added some mahogany top and bottom and it took on a Advent look apparently. I added a few inches to the cabinet and poured a hard grout in the bottom for stability keeping the inside volume to the original CSS cab size. I added a extra 5/16" width to the front baffle so i can wrap the whole cab with 1/8" cherry ply. I upgraded the crossovers to the mid tier they offered and they sound amazing. Next I'm going to build a MDF box to the same specs and compare the sound..MDF vs 13 ply birch. The guys at CSS are great to work with as well.
Make a video review!
Very cool. 😎
I wonder whether it would be possible for css to build speakers with non parallel surfaces
We definitely can. However, shipping something that a customer can build in that shape is much harder. Most of our customers are first time builders. Non-parallel surfaces are much harder to clamp, especially if you’re not familiar with someone of the techniques to do it. I would also point out that using the proper amount of damping material is more important than having non-parallel surfaces on the inside of your cabinets.
@kerryarmes2786 thanks for sharing your experience
Anything’s possible. They do just sell the parts kit and you could design your own cabinet. Would take a bit of design work, but not impossible. 😊
@@abxaudiophiles i have bo woodworking skills. Likely it is best to start with a simple bookshelf
@@stijnvanderlooy5311 - The 1TD-X would be a great and easy start. Cool thing is you don't need any woodworking skills, just some gluing and clamping skills, with a touch of soldering ;)
I have a pair of 1TDX Superiors. Beautiful sound.
So good. 😊
$6k for a diy tower speaker??!??Bwahahahaha!!! Nice.
Absolutely. I have a pair alongside about 8 other pairs of speakers and they are great. What do you run? Lol.
They are $5.5k completely finished and shipped to you. They start at $2k in DIY format.
Well it would not be DIY at that point would it. 😅😅😅
@@Audfile Heck yea!! Good stuff. ❤
The last speakers I built for curiosity were open baffle 6.5 inch with rear mount out of phase Motorola tweeters with no crossover. Run from a 50 watt amp with Yamaha equaliser. ( opens are not known for bass) and about 1. 5 meter from back wall and 12 meter to opposite wall. The image was amazing. The singer sounded like they were there.
@@chuckmaddison2924 We do a lot of open baffle around these parts. Fun stuff for sure. 👍🏼
Agreed, Douk Audio I think does a little better job with these inexpensive chi-fi amps then some competitors that basically use similar parts. But I can testify, that my ST-01 Pro kicks A$$ with just two Elac dbr62 Reference speakers. Movies, music, incredible Bass, balanced tone, great mid-range. Shakes the couch... These amps are fantastic deals. Note; I did upgrade the tubes to the GE Jan 5654W, like the ones shipped with this unit. The tubes make a noticeable difference. Very good preamp tubes. Very good sound, very good amp. I get plenty of power from the TPA 3250 Texas Instruments chip in the ST-01 Pro amp. The 55 chip in this new amp has even more kick... The sound quality is very close to my $5,000 tube amp, just not quite as loud. But loud enough... Thanks for the video.
cheers
I have to ask. Does the 3 tdx sound as good as your big open baffles for 1k you built?
The original OG baffles that were $999, with a single 15" and tweeter? I think those baffles are going to be a bit more real, dynamic, and quick, but no where near as well rounded as the 3TD-X. The 3tdx is a really great full range speaker. Those original baffles are magical, but you will need a good set up subwoofers to get them to outrun the 3tdx. Of course you can not build a set of 3td-x for $999, so it is a bit apples to oranges IMHO.. Plus we are comparing an open baffle to a box, its different worlds, like tube vs solid state, or AKM vs R2R... Personally I would take the 3Tdx over those OG for a more overall balanced consumer.
I don't consider myself a bass head, but I cannot live without a subwoofer. There's just something about those lower octaves when using a quality subwoofer. Nemo propaganda influenced me into getting the Rythmik LV12M. No regrets.
Subs are always fun! These babies dig pretty deep tho and it also depends on the room for sure. ;)
I'm listening to this video through a pair of Criton 1TD-X's. Powered by a pair of Schiit Vidar 2's they are amazing!!!
LET'S GO!! Well done... :)
That’s a dynamite combo. I’m running a Schiit OG Aegir through 1995 B&W Matrix 805s, which have been modified with Jantzen Superior Z caps.
@@ChicagoRob2 Nice. 😊
The 2TD-X are my reference speakers I hope to set aside for the baby baffles I just bought. I think it should make for a good comparison of these 2 DIY big dogs.
@@abxaudiophiles For sure. I have 2 standard subs but I'm contemplating doing 2 OB subs so I can get the full OB experience.
I agree that CSS has good products. I like the fact that their crossover is very easy to assemble via their board that makes it very clear where to place components. If I lived in the US I would find CSS very attractive
They seem to be a really good value in my evaluation. ;)

I don't have OB subs, but I do use OB bass drivers in a semi-topless asymmetrical U frame. The drivers are Monacor SP382-PA drivers with an Fs of 25hz and a QTS of 0.75. They will play flat down to 35hz in room. With slot loading, I would expect them to push lower still.

I traveled to Decfest 2024. I was able to spend 2 days listening to Open Baffles powered by Decware UFO and Sarah. I was blown away by the Caintuck Fast-15’s. They are small (slightly larger than a medium sized subwoofer). I’ve had my Caintuck (Lii Song Fast-15 drivers) for a couple of months and I couldn’t be happier. I’ll be waiting a year or two for my Decware UFO2’s. I’m powering my Open Baffles with a Audiolab 6000a Play Amp. It sounds very good with the Open Baffles but still a couple levels below what I heard at Decware. At Decware there was no problem with a low Sound Stage (though I am experiencing that a bit). My room is not treated and I’m still working on speaker placement. Bottom line, Caintuck/Lii Song can get you awesome sound for about $1,200 (assuming no tariffs) all in. This includes a $175 “notch” (not sure what that does). When I listened at Decware, my impression was “this is all the sound I’ll ever need). So far, I’ve not changed my opinion.

The open baffles and DS MK1 really leveled up my system this last year! I had to eventually have both after hearing them for myself. That was a great best of the year video, and thanks for all your other videos you made this last year and previous to then!
Awesome Stuff!! Thank you
Why buy the Galion A20, when you can buy the CCY SS300B for half the price?
They are totally different amps. The A20 is a stunner. ;)
How far do these need to be off the wall? Thanks
@@erichill5328 As most speakers will benefit from being as far off the wall as possible, these are no different. But, personally I’ve had them from 20” to the front baffle to 40” to the front baffle and sounded great. They’re pretty forgiving, and seem to have much less room issues than standard box speakers. Depth of soundstage is what I find to be the biggest gain typically in pulling speakers into the room.

Hi James, i've never seen your channel before but I will be watching from now on, thanks for the effort you put into this video especially, great stuff.
Thank you and welcome.. :)
The biggest single improvement you can make to your 2 channel speaker system is cross-talk cancellation. You end up with a huge three-dimensional sound stage where the speakers and the room boundaries "disappear" Sound images extend all the way up to your left and right ears. You can turn your head to "look" at these sound images. The best Amplifiers are the ones that degrade the source signal the least. Price has nothing to do with it.
Agreed, but price has a LOT to do with it.. :)
