Donna's reaction when opening the door is very special. She is always moving towards him or standing still waiting, but she knows immediately when she opens the door he's ready, and moves backwards to beckon him in. No more chasing, no more waiting, no more words--finally, Harvey gives her the gift of watching him come to her.
It really is different when it is about you and your personal life... People misunderstand being the smartest in the room to being the most arrogant. The real smartest are NOT cocky or arrogant about who they are. ;)
Its different when its just work work work, and no reading between the lines when love comes along. Because you're not thinking it, you're not seeing it. So in essence Harvey was all work no play and Donna could do both.... Both were stubborn, but Donna fell for him much much earlier. Harvey working so hard blinded by love from a woman he did not see as the one. Its complicated.
I love thisscene as much as I do because you can literally SEE the flip in his brain switch. Even though its acting, and this isnt real, its still like i saw a person realize something they know they should have a long long time ago. That look in harveys eyes is incredible. The actor gets all of my praise for his performance of this characteer.
true!!!!... tho, if we're gonna be honest, it's not that Rachel and Mike's relationship lacked something 'objectively', on the contrary, it was a very well fleshed out relationship on screen; I think what adds on to Darvey's already great chemistry is **slowburn** and appreciation for a ship feeds a lot on that, at least in my humble opinion
You know why this show was such a classic, When Donna opened the door, she just saw Hervey and knew what he was about to do next and realising that she slowly started to step back , no words, no dialogues just pure emotion.
Like that just before he speaks to samantha, harvey asks alex out for a burger and he says "i need to get back to the woman i love" while giving harvey a look as if to say "you should too"
For all the people saying that it took a while for Harvey to get it, I only partly agree with you. Harvey was emotionally held back from reaching out to people & being in significant relationships for most of the series because he was plagued by mother issues & abandonment issues. It took meeting Mike & the whole ordeal it brought with it to get him to a point where he could address those issues in therapy. Harvey genuinely fell for Donna but since he was emotionally stunted for most of the series, the only way he was able to keep her in his life for a long while was by asking her to come work for him. Once he started dealing with his issues & reconciling with his mother though, we could have skipped the whole dating the therapist arc: it felt like it was unnecessarily dragging things along.
I think the dating of the therapist was meant to be a replacement for Donna. Harvey was dating the therapist because she could see what his issues were and one, knew how to deal with them/navigate around them, and two; professionally and personally, she could never use those triggers to hurt him. Donna genuinely liked him, understood him and saw his flaws. Donna helped him to confront those issues but she was always empathetic. Harvey thought he could have his cake and eat it too with the therapist that was his girlfriend. Donna was more than a secretary, colleague or romantic partner...she's Donna.
I do think the arc of having to choose between her and Donna was significant because he realized that he would rather have Donna in his life than have a girlfriend and after that point he stops dating which I felt was the beginning of his journey to realizing how Important Donna is to him. It does take a while after that but I thought it was an important point. I do agree though that she was my least favorite love interest for harvey and I wish she stayed his therapist. I also could not agree more about how him "finally getting it" is more about him finally being able to deal with something he wasn't before. Lesser shows paint the characters as being too dumb to realize something but this show made It clear that he was struggling with his feelings for Donna. It was never that he didn't know he had them.
