Here in Australia they owned Holden, who once had 50% of the market. Holden don't exist any more. GM also drove Saab into extinction, and I note they lost big money on Opel and Vauxhall in Europe for many years. Within a year of those 2 companies being sold off they were in big profit - in just a year! GM has been clueless for many years, and remains so under current management.

Never forget my 1972 Lemans. Had some transmission work done that required the transmission to be removed. The mechanic didn't properly torque the torque converter to the flex plate. After a while the bolts backed out and it made an awful sound. Got it up on a hoist, removed each torque converter bolt, put some tite on them and retorqued them, end of problem. Later sold the car to some young kid who wrapped it around a tree the 1st time he drove it in the snow. I could understand that because those GM A-body cars were squirrely on slippery roads.

Car manufacturers found out people would buy Sirus satellite radio subscriptions And On-Star and pay to have their car tracked if it was stolen. Why not charge them subscriptions to use cruise control and turn signals. Subscriptions to use the glovebox and the trunk. Or maybe even to drive the car over 35 miles an hour!

    • @CurlyFromTheSwirly

Car tracking from theft is not likely to happen. I know someone who reported a car stolen, the cop said the GPS doesn't work that way.
The GPS helps find stuff and relieve, but it's more complex then just looking at a phone app and seeing "there's my car."

I bought a 2010 GMC Sierra. I planned to drive it till I could find a good deal. Still driving it but looking at a transmission rebuild at 150k. I haven't had a car payment in so many years I think I will rebuild the transmission. The discs were slipping causing mild shifting flares when cold. I have a tuner to disable DOD so I slightly increased the shift pressure. No more flares and smooth as glass, but I know the discs are worn so when the time comes, I'll rebuild it because I love not having vehicle payments.😂

I'm with you about car payments. My other tactic for a good cheap car is to buy used Cadillacs. When they are about 8 years old, nobody wants them, but they are usually well maintained and pretty snazzy. I got my last one in 2016, I think. It was a 2008 DTS in mint condition, 5 pages of over-maintenance such as tires, belts, etc., and 71,000 miles. I scooped it up for $13,200 including taxes and tags and fees all paid. I am still driving it, and it is a great ride. Just an idea. --Old Guy

Outlander Sport is a very dependable vehicle. I'd like one myself. My mother bought a new 2015 GT. It's at 70k miles. The only issue yet was needing to replace the gas cap. My father also bought a new 2019 ES. I think he's at 40k miles. No issues yet. Old design, but a very good little CUV.

Overall I'd agree with the advice on Toyota Tacomas. However, we had a 2002 that I bought new because at that time I couldn't FIND a USED crewcab Tacoma. 18 years later and after having been rear-ended about ten times on SoCal freeways (I kid you not!), and BACKED INTO once, the truck had so many issues that I never could get fixed right. I used to joke that my wife either had the worst luck, or she was the worst driver ever and used Jedi mind tricks to convince the cops and the other driver that these collisions were always the other driver's fault. For example, the passenger side door would refuse to unlock but only if somebody was sitting in the passenger seat. The passenger side window would refuse to roll down half the time. I started getting electrical gremlins. Sometimes the floor shifter would stick in Park. The ignition switch would take finagling to get it to move to Start, regardless which key I used. I finally traded it for a 2011 Tacoma in 2020 because I needed a truck with more trailer towing capacity. I also really wanted 4WD for moving to my midwest hometown, but I ended up settling for a truck with limited slip rear because 4WD trucks in SoCal are priced beyond reasonableness.

The absolute WORST car I ever had was my first new car, a 1985 Ford Escort. It had a horrible design flaw; an aluminim engine, with steel head gaskets, leading to the need for 2 (!!) rebuilt engines!
Instead of issuing a recall on that garbage car, they made me go through "arbitration", so I only received a fraction of what I would have received in a recall.
When I finally sold that "Wallet-waster", I purchased my first of 4 Toyotas, my 1994 Corolla. And I went from the worst car I've ever had, to one of 4 of the best cars I have ever had! I now have a 2022 Camry, another great Toyota.

Retired automotive engine designer here. I'll give credit where credit is due. GM had one of the best research divisions out there. The problem was, they would release a report telling you what not to do on an engine and shortly thereafter GM would release a vehicle that did exactly what the research division said not to. Many similar stories on other design issues. The left hand just didn't know what the right hand was doing.

FYI, when I stopped working sub contracting for G.M. in 2019, the average worker had not gotten a pay raise in more than ten years, though they did get contract and performance bonuses.
During that time, production of the Cruz was moved to Mexico where the average worker makes less than a third of what a U.S. worker made, while U.S. production went to a two tier system where new workers made 18 bucks an hour and there was no price break to the buyer on the cost of that car.

Best to use seat belts rather than relying on ageing electronic triggering devices to deploy the Airbag!
