The Galaxy gets darker the farther counterclockwise you set the echo rate, just as a real tape echo loses fidelity as you change the speed of the tape. The effect on it is very noticeable especially if you swing the echo rate knob from right to left quickly. You can counteract the loss of high end by increasing the treble control. I don't have the RE-2 so I'm curious if it does the same thing!
Also, the reason the Galaxy still modulates even with tape age all the way down is because it's simulating the slightly wavering speed of the capstan, since it's not perfectly keeping the same speed all of the time. If you listen to a real space echo, you can hear that type of modulation on the repeats. I think it adds so much to the "spaciness" of the pedal. What I've noticed with the tape age all the way down on the Galaxy is that you get a little less wow and much less/no flutter, and the splice on the tape is imperceptible. One of the things I love about the Galaxy is you can hear when the splice goes by the heads, as the tape gets caught up just a bit. Great vid!!

Thank you for this great explanation! I wish I had a real space echo to compare but the price is crazy!

Only modulates like that if the capstan wheel is worn…..a space echo set up properly doesn’t modulate to any extent you’ll hear. The Galaxy plugin has the same problem that you can’t rid of the modulation.

good demo, i think the boss sounds more like an digital delay which they both are but the UA emulates a tape delay at least.

Great comparison. Have the re-2 but I think I need the Galaxy too. The highs on the re-2 can’t seem to be tamed

Thanks. That’s my thoughts as well. I have the boss RE-202 coming next week. I’m curious about the differences.

Sold RE-202 for Galaxy. UA pedal works better for me but I do feel the 202 distortion/drive was better even though it wasn't realistic to the original. Thanks for the video.

Thanks for commenting. I have the 202 coming tomorrow or Tuesday. I’m going to compare the 2 but I really like the galaxy. I have strymon volante as well and that thing is awesome it to big for my pedalboard. I use it for the studio mostly.

You pointed it out very well : hugging the sound vs separation effect. I also think the presence of the Boss preamp has a role in this separation effect. Maybe NUX Tape echo can already hug enough for half the price ?

I haven’t tried the NUX. Maybe one day!
