I love this movie! I think its worth mentioning the allegory in it, the director and writer is trans, and they wrote it while coming to terms with that part of themself.
    Spoilers:
You say there wasnt enough horror to justify the turmoil he was going through, but losing years like seconds, too afraid to try and save yourself, all the while knowing you're going to die as someone you aren't meant to be. Yikes that seemed horrifying to me. Its easy to feel like it isn't worth it to transition, but this shows the other side of the coin, repression. It legitimized his fear, while showing the consequences of it, and in the end, he faces up to who he is and has to decide if he acts on it. For me, that read very strongly as a question to the audience "when you face up to who you are, what are you going to do next?"
I believe it was probably made with a trans audience in mind, and it isn't going to resonate with everyone. I see where you're coming from, it isnt super plot heavy, but id definitely try engaging with it from a different perspective! :)
