Was that when she was playing in the hotel in St. Louis when Roland Orzabal saw her? Tears for Fears were in town playing a concert and they were more impressed with her little trio than the big show they were putting on. More real and more heart!!!
@@jamesbond4633 - I did the St. Louis Hotel gig with her, but I left before she hooked up with Tears for Fears. It was the trio format with me on bass and Russ Kammerer on drums.
@@rickmoors Sweet. In a French T.V. Interview Roland said that she married the drummer!!!! I saw her on tour with Tears for Fears when they played in Toronto. Just an awesome concert. Her voice and Roland's really gel together especially on the song "Woman In Chains". I get goosebumps hearing that song. Roland said Oleta left the night he saw her and he talked to her band about her. So that must have been you. Pretty cool. What was your set list like back in the day? Do you still play? My pedigree was playing drums in a polka band with my brothers when I was young. Now I play the guitar and sing too at open mics and blues jams!!!! I always say my Carnegie Hall is the open Mic on Friday nights at the London Music Club in London Ontario!!!!
@@jamesbond4633 - Yes, John Cushon, great drummer and great guy. I did some demos with he and Oleta shortly before I left. We did a combination of Oleta's original songs and covers, but she was great at interpreting them in her own way. She was a musical genius. One night in Phoenix she retired to her room and came down to the gig the next night with a 6 song Cole Porter medley she wrote in her room with no piano or any other musical instrument to assist - she heard it all in her head and transcribed it. I had an offer from a group called the Jan Park band who was signed to Capitol records at the time, and Oleta at that time was still playing high class hotels. I figured it might be my best chance to get a "record deal" which is what we all wanted at that time. Jan's band got dropped before the first rehearsal and Oleta had already hired my pal Roman Czerwinski to play bass at my suggestion. D'oh! It worked out OK though, I ended up keeping busy in L.A. ever since then. I work full time with several groups here including The Bonedaddys, Conjunto Jardin, The Bill Lynch band and a bunch of others, and still do a fair amount of session work. Glad you are still playing and enjoying it, James and nice catching up with you!
This song came out around the time of the Gulf War. I was working as a Top 40 disc jockey, and “Get Here” was in heavy rotation because all the parents wanted their children home from the conflict. Such an understated yet powerful song. I, too, am surprised Oleta Adams didn’t get bigger than she did. Her voice was spot on. Reminded me of Gladys Knight. Still love this song thirty years later.
This was the tail end of when this kind of soft heart felt music was still popular and being created. This and music like Extreme's "More Than Words" could still be hits. But it died out with the introduction of Grunge and Neo Soul.
@@barbarabuford5795 need a writer to make it Big. Singer Songwriter or think Dionne Warwick Burt Bacharach or Olivia Newton John and John Farrar or pick a great artist to cover like Linda Ronstadt with Buddy Holly songs. Not easy
There are many reasons she "never made it big", some of which were within her control and some not, but I'm glad to have what we do have on record from her prime. She can't sing like this anymore and it makes me sad to hear her perform in recent years. There was really no one quite like her on the scene in the 1990s.

Beautiful voice, talent, & lady! She sings so effortless yet so powerful, perfect pitch. AND all while playing the piano so gracefully! Amazing. This was my wife & my ‘song’ when we first met & she traveled all over the country 90% of the time! Thanks Oleta for your gift!

I was working a show and flew over from Oahu to the big island for a big benefit concert. She showed up with a few band members but it was a hot afternoon and an unshaded venue. Everyone went to get lunch. Everyone. The banquet captains told the staff to take their break too. It was the calm before the storm. My job was all but done, but I kinda hung back, and then found myself all alone in the place when she got up and started playing piano and singing to warm up. I stood mesmerized. Still remember it decades later. I’ve seen a lot of great vocalists, because of what I used to do for a living, and she’s one of them. She was gracious and friendly too. Wow, what a voice.
I was lucky enough to play bass with her for a couple years. Monumental talent and one of the kindest people I ever knew.

I love the bass line so much in "Get here"!
Killed it. Dismembered it. Threw it on the front lawn for someone else to find...
Set it on fire & did the slow motion walk away
For someone to be able to pull off a live performance that flawlessly, is definitely blessed by God!! She is amazing!!!
She has a richness a fullness and a power that is absent in today's so called talent.

I was thinking that her voice reminded me of Gladys knight today, especially as her voice seems to have gotten more powerful with age.
I thought the song was sexuaL.
