I do agree that the stealing of the money wasn’t literal, but I think there is some symbolism in it. After they broke up everyone accused Tom of only dating her for fame, so I think this line was a subtle way of saying that Tom wasn’t the one who had a side reason for being in the relationship. I don’t think Taylor had syndical intentions when her and Tom got together, but the whole song is about how she inadvertently entered into a relationship for the wrong reason, so I feel like this line is there to kind of silence the people who accused Tom of having this evil agenda, and it’s kind of her admitting that it was her wrong intentions that helped end the relationship, not his. Kind of like a “He’s not the one who stole the money, I am” where money symbolizes a side reason for the relationship. Idk, I could be wrong, but there were so many accusations thrown his way when they broke up, and when I heard this line I felt like it was her subtly defending him by painting the picture of her being the one to steal the money, not him. I love it when Taylor tells the truth even when it might make her seem like the bad guy, so (as a huge Tom Hiddleston fan) I so appreciated the fact that she not only didn’t try to blame him, but she actually took he blame for herself. I love it when Taylor is humble enough and big enough to admit her mistakes, even when they weren’t necessarily intentional
Lauren Lipman Lauren Lipman you’re welcome! People always say that Taylor only ever plays victim, so I love these kind of songs where she owns her mistakes, and I always want to give her credit for doing so :)
I think that the song is about how she left Calvin Harris for Tom Hiddleston as well but I think that the bridge is about how she left Tom Hiddleston for Joe Alwyn. The line "it's no surprised I turned you in cause us traitors never win" is a big giveaway and so is the line aboutBonnie and Clyde.
Notice how she says "we're both sorry" twice. The second time has two tones. I think that's the old and new Taylor that's both sorry....even though the old Taylor's dead.
"Getaway car" is my fav along with "This is why we can't have nice things". It makes me feel somehow foolishly closer to Tom :D. I feel sorry for him still, he gives off the vibe of a genuinely kind and emotional person and I wouldn't be surprised if he took it a lot harder than Tay. Still like Taylor very much though. Not a "swifty", but I enjoy her music and like her as a person.
He is kind ,gentle and emotional although recognized for villain . But I'm glad things didn't worked between them as they're NOT meant for each other ,really .
I think the line, "Now we're both sorry, we're both sorry" is Calvin and Taylor being sorry to Tom for what Tom found himself in. In a way, Hiddleswift was a dramatic response to Calvin and Taylor's relationship ending, and it was hard for Tom to get the chance and perfect relationship he likely wanted. He seemed really romantic in the paparazzi pics and I'm sure he felt pressure to win Taylor's trust and be the only one to have her attention, when she sounds like ("circus") she was in communication with both him and Calvin. AMAZING, POETIC SONG! Beautiful imagery
This Is my favorite song from This album. Did you think about the Time un every verse like Taylor says "you were driving the getaway car" like Tom Was supposed to get Taylor out of that relationship for good, then she says "we're riding in a getaway car" like she Was only enjoy that ride but Tom wanted More from her AND last she Sang "I'm in a getaway Car" when she left Tom too AND felt sad for him. This song Is everything. It's too much for me to handle. 😥
Holy shiz, I was living under a rock throughout the whole Hiddleswift affair. Thanks for the decoding. This might end up being the highlight of my day.
You forgot one part, in the bridge how she said ‘until I switched to the other side’ I think she’s referencing how she switched to the drivers seat of the car and took control of the relationship, since I’m the chorus she says he was driving the car ( which mean she was in control of the relationship). When she was in the drivers seat she turned him in (dumped him)!
ME TOO!! But heyyy that's the way the cookie crumbles. Sometimes people who date aren't meant for each other but that's the whole point of dating! To find out what we want in a long-term partner. So date away!! and hopefully we'll all find our Joe Alwyn one day 😍
Lauren Lipman I thought DWOHT was about joe cause she says ooh 25 years old oh how were u to know and isn’t joe 25 and she also says I loved u in secret and they have been trying to keep there love a secret and away from the media idk I could be wrong
I think this song shows she wasn't totally over Calvin Harris. So she could not commit fully to Tom. It was a rebound relationship. Her feelings for Calvin 'poisoned the well'. When she says, 'think of the place where you first met me,' she is referring to the fact that she had a boyfriend when she met Tom and sort of cheated on him and left him, so Tom should not be surprised that she left Tom for another guy, Joe.
that “think of the place where you first met me” line made me think that maybe Taylor met Tom and started to like him even though she was with Calvin and that’s the reason they split
GIRL, THE MAKING OF GETAWAY CAR JUST CAME OUT AND I THINK YOU WERE RIGHT ABOUT "Put the money in a bag and I stole the keys. That was the last time you ever saw me"
If you think about the way she says the line think about the place where you first met me in the song she hits a high note on the word met implying that they met and the met gala
He's DRIVING the car, he's not the car himself. I mean, she's saying that she used the opportunity to get out of her old, wrong relationship. But she doesn't say he's actually a car. Other people have gotten pissed at her for this song, which so crazy. She says she's done something horrible and that she's sorry. So, I don't know. She's not boiling him down to an object. But this is my favorite song on the album, so yeah :)
It's crazy how this storyline is somehow universal. I can't believe I'm listening to something I can relate so much to. Beautiful explanation and perfect song to be honest. I feel like getaway car and out of the woods just capture feelings so perfectly you can't help but feel overwhelmed over how precise they are.
I'm so glad when I see a true Swifie who really feels Taylor's art and gets what she means. In this sad area of gossiping, making up things about her, judging without even trying to get real reasons and basics for this.. It's so great and refreshing, so important that there are still millions of fans loving and treating her as a friend or family. Exactly the way she treats us. Thank you. Have a good day. Same interpretation as mine. xx
I think the "he was running after us" part is referencing to the media and how the media is always running after them and taking pictures of them and so everything got messy because they could never truly enjoy their time together. And maybe like the prison break and freedom was freedom from all of that drama with kanye??? Idk maybe I'm just overthinking this...
I would love if you decoded ‘so it goes...’. It’s probably about Tom (the mentioning of all eyes on us) or perhaps Joe but I think it’s kind of interesting how the verses mirror ‘...ready for it?’. The first verse describes someone else and the second describes herself. Also, this is probably not relevant, they are the two songs with ellipses in the title. I feel they are connected somehow but maybe I’m wrong. I really love the descriptive and thematic lyrics in the song but I never hear people talk about this one. 🤗🤗💓
I read a theory on twitter that the ellipse starting with "ready for it..." the songs afterward are what the media portray Taylor as, or her reputation, and then the songs after "so it goes..." are the "truth" or her true feelings/confessions.
OMG, I decoded So It Goes... right now! Omg! “Gold cage, hostage to my feelings” That means the gold cage in “Look What You Made Me Do” and in the decoding vid Lauren said “The gold cage represents how Taylor feels trapped in this world of hate” Ah-Ha! Caught you, Taylor!
Omg soo great!I also think, that the lyric "I was dying in the getaway car" means that the "old taylor" was dying, she started thinking obout the whole thing, kinda changed, also she started dating Joe...So with the breakup with Tom, who was the getaway car, started the Reputation era
Thank you so much for decoding this! I absolutely love this song, mostly because I love Tom! I was waiting for someone to do this since the album came out-yay. So I went back and saw several news stories of when Tom and Taylor were dating and one source said Tom was her getaway and they were jet setting across the globe. Both things she mentions in this song. Also when Calvin came put to shade them, he mentioned how their breakup became a circus. Also something she mentions in the song! Little hints at everything that was said of them are on this song! Love love love
Lauren Kaminski it’s not. It’s about her relationship with Joe and how they have to ‘Dance with their hands tied’ cause both are popular in their own right. She also doesn’t want to move to fast cause she wants it to last.
+david stevens I'm not sure about whom it is for, but it seems like the sing is for someone she could have been forever with, but couldn't. like she say, "I could've spend forever with your hands in pockets" and might I interject that Joe and Taylor were very personal, no one talked about them, but she says, "people started talking putting us through our paces" and also she says "IF I could dance with you again", meaning she can't anymore. I srsly feel like this song is about he ex lover with whom she could have spent an eternity but decided not to, and it seems like it was public. Calvin or Hiddleston would be reasonable.

Nobody mentioned the "I knew it from the first Old Fashioned". I think the Old Fashioned was the picture of them kissing outside her Rhode Island mansion. The picture looked so old fashioned. My thoughts on it anyway.
That’s an interesting perspective! But an Old Fashioned is an alcoholic beverage with bourbon! 😉 so I think that’s what she meant, I knew it from our first drink.
of course! So glad you're liking! Let me know other celebrities or other things you would like me to talk about! Thanks Ahmad, hope you're having a great dayy!!
Lauren Lipman You have a knack for this "decoding", good to see you passionate about it, ... let us see what the rep album means, then, maybe some of her older albums? This is probably her most "complicated" album.. thanks!
"You know there's many different ways that you can kill the one you love The slowest way is never loving them enough" this goes well with the slow poisoning reference
The travelling around the world part is also in I DID SOMETHING BAD I never trust a playboy but they love me *So I fly them all around the world* and I let them think they saved me Omg 😱😱😱 she just called tom a playboy
I thought the "well" in the line is not the well with water but the connector word expression smth. Like "he poisoned the- well, I was lying to myself". Like she's just trying to give herself a reason to leave him, by stating that he poisoned smth then retorted back to herself that it's not really the case. Anw, thanks for clearing that up. 😂
Hi Lauren! I think the lyrics "he poisoned the well" is about the fallacy "Poisoning the well". "Poisoning the well (or attempting to poison the well) is a type of informal logical fallacy where irrelevant adverse information about a target is preemptively presented to an audience, with the intention of discrediting or ridiculing everything that the target person is about to say." Maybe she's referring to Calvin ranting on twitter saying bad things about her? thus, poisoning the well or poisoning the minds of other people before Tay could defend herself? After poisoning their minds, all Tay's words will not be believed. Your explanation is somehow related to that, though. You should read Love is a fallacy. Love you Lauren!
I loved your point of the view about the song. It’s one of my favourites of the album, also because I am very found of Tom. I also believe that so it goes is for him ( loki is a kind of magician after all and all the eyes were on them). I am looking forward to hear your theory.
late to the party but I feel similar vibes in way of a sort of apology in Back to December from Speak Now. For example, when she repeats "We're both sorry" for the second time I believe this is a sort of apology to this guy who she is singing to who I think is definitely Tom. It is definitely reiterated when she repeats the apology. I also really think that since Taylor is such a romantic she wants a romantic love story so telling him to think about the place/the way they first met- it seems not very ideal for her. Like she is saying that of course it was not going to work long term but I had to get away from that other guy and you were the "vehicle" for that! I love your decoded lyrics. Sorry I am just seeing them but yay new subscriber! :)
I understood the part ‘think about the place we first met’ as Tom was the ‘Getaway Car’ for Calvin and her relationship and she got into another Getaway Car’ to end her relationship with Tom. Could be way off but that was my take on it. Thoughts?
I think it was right how she said that the part about the "put the money and the bag and I stole the keys" is fictional because Jack and Taylor thought about it on the spot while trying to figure out that part of the song.
OMG, I decoded So It Goes... right now! Omg! “Gold cage, hostage to my feelings” That means the gold cage in “Look What You Made Me Do” and in that decoding vid you said “The gold cage represents how Taylor feels trapped in this world of hate” Ah-Ha! Caught you, Taylor!
is this related to IKYWT? it sounds like it is because when Taylor was performing IKYWT Acoustic version she said that "I knew he was bad news but i fell for him anyway" and now she says "he poisoned the well i was lying to myself" wow
Tom Hiddleston genuinely liked Taylor which was definitely a nice change. He deserves so much better tho and he honestly should get the world❤️
I completely agree ❤️
I do agree that the stealing of the money wasn’t literal, but I think there is some symbolism in it. Tom just so nice idk how he can be accused of anything 😢
Thank you! You are sooo right!
Fun fact(?): poisoning the well also means that someone is changing the way the public sees someone else 🤫
hey that's a good point!!!
I can imagine when Taylor wrote this song she'll be like "Sorry no breakups album for you Calvin and tom I'm just gonna write both of you in a song"

RIGHT?!?
Alice Garcia Yeah true! I also think that the song Dancing With Our Hands Tied is about Tom too.

And didn't Taylor meet tom at the met gala? They had that whole dance thing that was recorded and that was when she was still with Calvin.

Oh, that makes sense. Never heard of that drink :)
This was amazing!!!! Keep up the good job, girl
i love this song so much! written by Taylor very well, and decoded by you smartly. Taylor really know how to play with words.
Wow! I buy all that, so... possible. Taylor is deep and I need someone like you explaining all these lyrics to me. Thanks Lauren for the update!😀
This is probably her most "complicated" album.. thanks!
"You know there's many different ways that you can kill the one you love
The slowest way is never loving them enough"
this goes well with the slow poisoning reference
You did a really great job explaining this song!!
Awesome insight!! Can't wait for the next decoding video!
The travelling around the world part is also in I DID SOMETHING BAD
I never trust a playboy but they love me
*So I fly them all around the world* and I let them think they saved me
Omg 😱😱😱 she just called tom a playboy
Tom looks like a gentleman to me
Hmm Tom isn't the first one that flies around the world with her. I think she refers to her other exes.
I think it's her saying what people think about her, like about her reputation
@@harleen5748 yes, I agree that Tom seems like a gentleman...
@@harleen5748 I want him to be a playboy though .
WOW this video is SO GOOD
That was a great video!! Loved it
Yes you should totally decode I️ Did Something Bad! I️ love your decoding lyric videos! 💜
I love love love your decodes!
Wow. I liked this song, but after watching you delve into it, I love the song now! She really tells stories in a beautiful way!
"Poisoning the well (or attempting to poison the well) is a type of informal logical fallacy where irrelevant adverse information about a target is preemptively presented to an audience, with the intention of discrediting or ridiculing everything that the target person is about to say."
Maybe she's referring to Calvin ranting on twitter saying bad things about her? thus, poisoning the well or poisoning the minds of other people before Tay could defend herself? After poisoning their minds, all Tay's words will not be believed.
Your explanation is somehow related to that, though.
You should read Love is a fallacy. Love you Lauren!
Tom is a good guy ,still hurt me how she left him
I loved your point of the view about the song. It’s one of my favourites of the album, also because I am very found of Tom. I also believe that so it goes is for him ( loki is a kind of magician after all and all the eyes were on them). I am looking forward to hear your theory.
My top five songs are
1- Getaway Car
2- New Year's Day
3- Don't Blame Me
4- I Did Something Bad
5- Delicate
Ngl, I still can't listen to this song because it feels so uncomfortable because I feel so bad for Tom
late to the party but I feel similar vibes in way of a sort of apology in Back to December from Speak Now. :)
The “getaway car” is the car at the last scene in wildest dream 😂😂😂😂😂
I totally love how you explain everything. 🖤 I'm subscribing for sure. 😌
Binge watching all your videos about Taylor and I'm loving it, all.❤️
I’m so glad!!!☺️☺️
If I would listen to Getaway Car again, I would remember this girl.
HI LAUREN!!! Can’t wait to hear your thoughts on Getaway car. Watching now!!!
I understood the part ‘think about the place we first met’ as Tom was the ‘Getaway Car’ for Calvin and her relationship and she got into another Getaway Car’ to end her relationship with Tom. Could be way off but that was my take on it. Thoughts?
+david stevens hi David!!! Be sure to let me know what you think!!!😍😍
Lauren Lipman love watching and listening to your interpretation of her songs/lyrics. Keep it up and thank you.
I honestly couldn't understand this song till I watched this video. Thanks for making it .
I want ur dress/top its so pretty 😍 also I think you’re right about the tom thing
I just subscribed omg!! 😍😍
You just earned yourself a new subscriber. 😊
I think it was right how she said that the part about the "put the money and the bag and I stole the keys" is fictional because Jack and Taylor thought about it on the spot while trying to figure out that part of the song.
Yes Queen! I would love to see the video of you saying your favourite lyrics from reputation😄
OMG, I decoded So It Goes... right now! Omg!
“Gold cage, hostage to my feelings”
That means the gold cage in “Look What You Made Me Do” and in that decoding vid you said
“The gold cage represents how Taylor feels trapped in this world of hate”
Ah-Ha! Caught you, Taylor!
Thank you. You just helped me with my English paper. (:
I think the lyric in shades of grey means her feelings when she met Tom becuase her feelings were bright but dark at the same time
Also i think put the money in the car and i Stone the Keys means That she left him the same way as she left calvin, driving her getaway car
😱😱😱 needed this decode!!! Lauren your that best!!!
is this related to IKYWT? it sounds like it is because when Taylor was performing IKYWT Acoustic version she said that "I knew he was bad news but i fell for him anyway" and now she says "he poisoned the well i was lying to myself" wow
I bet the video for this song will be great.
