How to Create a Boxplot (lesson for grades 6-7)

  • I show how to make a boxplot from a set of data (weights of cats): first you find the 5-number summary (minimum, lower quartile, median, upper quartile, maximum) and then use those to draw the boxplot on the number line.
    I also discuss the meaning of the interquartile range and range as measures of variability. In this case, the data is spread out.

    The video is meant for 7th graders as a review of how to draw a box-and-whisker plot but could also be used in grade 6 math when students are initially studying that topic.

      I omitted him from grade 6 and 7 videos... I thought some might find a mascot silly at this level.
