This is a fantastic tribute to Marc! His collaboration with Leon Russell on the Asylum Choir is the reason I became a musician. Marc is a really talented musician and composer. I am glad that you recorded and shared this fantastic video.
Thanks for always remembering the people on the front line. My son is a new physician that has been dealing with covid 6 months after residency. Hey, he takes care of his patients.
You don't hear much about Leon's Skyhill Studio although a lot of music was happening there. Leon used to call it his "home for unwed musicians". JJ Cale was the studios first engineer. Glen Campbell recorded his first solo demos there. Jeff Porcaro met David Hungate there, which led to his time with Sonny and Cher. In 1972 Leon moved the studio to a decommissioned church in downtown Tulsa, which has an equally interesting history. The Church studio is currently being restored and renovated into a museum, working state of the art recording studio and performance center.
I never really heard of Stevie Ray on the radio much (or always missed him when one of this songs played) but I got to see Stevie Ray in concert when the DJ I was dating had to work and asked if I wanted the tickets (1985). Had nothing else to do since he was working so I grabbed a friend and off we went not expecting nothing but some good tunes. MAN OH MAN. We were blown away! Most amazing experience and just hearing his name takes me back. 💕🥰🎸 🖕 Thanks Lee
Hi from the UK Leland. I really look forward to watching your channel daily. Haven’t missed out on one. You have built up such a great community of followers. Thanks for sharing your time with us, the fantastic clips of M & R ( such gorgeous boys❤️) and of course, your precious musical gift. An amazing bass player, and such a lovely man 🇬🇧
Ohhhhhh my! I am so glad to hear Benno and Stevie, an absolute treat. Cool, sweet tunes. Great choice today(and everyday!). So blessed to hear these tunes. Have an awesomely sunny weekend everyone. Stay safe🤗
Great to hear SRV on the tracks. He was so kind to me when I approached him as a google-eyed fan. I was a mere kid at the time. He took time with me and was just so generous with me as a person. I felt the loss personally when he left this world all too soon. Thanks Leland.
If I were back in college, my music history courses might be titled Medieval music, renaissance music, classical music, romantic music, impressionistic music, 20th century music, and Lee sklar's version of rock music Circa 1968 to present. Thank you for turning this into an historical course of truly great music.
Wow when I was kid I used to the Nightcrawlers.I When I bought a promo record for Kellogg's Cornflakes a 45 I read that the song was credit to a Leon Russell.Wow.Great to hear these songs from the way back machine Thanks Leland .Be safe,Stay safe.!!!
Hi Lee - as always, your post is the refuge of my day. I hope you're having a lovely weekend (despite how busy yours seems). It's hot as hell here in Denver, and I hope the heat isn't too bad in Pasadena. Beautiful musical selection today - so good. Great blues-rock vibe to wind down a Saturday. (Really looking forward to Tuesday's live stream!)
Hey y'all ooh that's sweet NOLA vibe going on there! Dr John meets the Doobies at Randy Newman's crib. NICE. Neville brothers and the Meters too. Ooh you hit 🎯 the spot Mr Sklar. Ciao from NOLA.
Saw Stevie, Jimmie with the Tbirds and many more at Tipitinas many years ago.Snooks Eaglin opened a John Lee Hooker show one time.Saw the Funky Meters there several years ago on Halloween. That is the "House That Fess Built". I heard Galactic owns the place now.
Even with this group’s collective brain power, will we ever explore all the corners of your musical past, Leland? It doesn’t matter; it’s the journey that’s important-a magic carpet ride! Stay safe and stay well!
World Keeps spinning Marc sounds very Leon-esque! And I usually though of Marc as the guitarist...but when you have Stevie Ray Vaughn...you take the Piano seat! ;-)
Bennie was 19 when he and Leon cut the Asylum Choir stuff.Back in the 70s, Bennie was one of the top Texas guitar players along with Stevies, big brother Jimmie Vaughan. Also in "The Cobras" Denny Freeman played lead and Stevie played rhythm guitar. Also in Jimmie's band "The Chessmen" with Doyle Brahmhall on drums, Stevie played bass.Texas has many many bad motorscooters.Need another Texas Music lesson, let me know.
Sounds also sort of like a 2007 Toto reunion. But the whole point of Toto is that those guys have spent their whole life crossing paths and playing together at different sessions. It could be a brand new thing too.
Thanks for getting this one in amidst all of the craziness today! Really interesting stuff which I don’t think I’d heard before. Some subtle Lowell/Little Feat vibes in there. Stevie in quite a different context! Looking forward more news on the Top Secret Project with Luke, Gregg, and very esteemed Co.!
I have been enjoying these segments. Yesterday stumbled upon a version four of Gene Clark's Silver Phial (more acoustic version). 1st time I heard it and like the bass playing on it.
Fantastic stuff…not just because Stevie is on it..although it sure doesn’t hurt either😂. Thanks for sharing. Pace yourself, and SLEEP tonight!..Stay safe🖕
"Trying to remember everything ain't easy..." That's because you got a lot of everything! Thought of you listening to Jeff Back w Vinnie playing Stratus! EPIC track and bass line
The opening on "World keeps spinning" sounds like a TV show theme song opening vibe and I can not remember for the life of me which?????? Also has a Dr. John/Randy Newman sound. Love the Bass and S.R.V on it. Marc's pipes are in TUNE!!!!
Such a small world, musically, isn’t it? By the time you get to certain age, you’ve worked with or crossed paths with almost everybody. Interesting to hear Stevie in his earlier (20 ish?) years!
Especially loved the last tune. Had the stars aligned (well they did I guess because you two played together) but had SRV not met his maker so soon I think you guys could have formed a GREAT band.
Geeez! Great, Great, Great!!!! What a great vibe! Excellent performances by everyone! I have to have a copy of this gem! SRV at the time his older brother, Jimmie was just starting to make it with his band, The Fabulous Thunderbirds. Stevie must have been about 17 years old (?) Really cool. Self released in 1970 or '73? I LOVE that your channel is unearthing some hidden gems!! Wow!
There’s a lot of SRV comments on this Marc Benno set, but no one’s said anything about that smokin’ Peace/Love bass groove that’s holding everything together. Just thought I’d mention that...
Lee isn't talking about Little Doyle.Hes talking about Doyle Brahmhall Sr.Little Doyle's dad. Also Billy Ethridge on here played with Gibbons and ZZ Top.
Every Christmas I play "Icicle Star Tree" from the Asylum Choir II album! It just makes me happy! (Like last years Christmas Advent Calendar songs Jim Cox did!)

I still have a CD of Leon and Benno. Great piece like, ballad of a soldier.
One of my favorites and "Straight Brother" too.Another great one on there is a cover of Joe Cocker's "Hello Little Friend".
Great line in that tune.
"STRAY DOGS WHO LIVE ON HIGHWAY, WALK ON THREE LEGS.....MOVE TOO SLOW TO GET THE MESSAGE" lol
Stevie had a habit of sounding like three guitarists playing at once.

I think it must be a rerelease of sorts.
It‘s a shame, but I don‘t know many of your musicians you talk about. At least I hear sth. about them on this channel. 👍🏻
It sounds a lot Like Jesse "Ed" Davis playing slide on Friends.
I hear a lot of Leon in his singing. Different voice, similar style.

Rita also did Marc's "Donut Man".

Marc Benno and Bobby Whitlock recorded at least one track together earlier this year. Don't know if they recorded more or when it may be released.
