  • Hello my fellow Architecture lovers. In this video we will look at different types of architectural portfolios, what you should put into each type and why. I have spent the last 12 months creating an architectural portfolio (academic), which I used to apply for a Masters degree. For the second part of this video, I will review the layout of my portfolio. Special thanx to Eric from / 30by40 I lost my script so I had to improvise which made it quite awkward, but I couldn't face a complete re-record so here it is. In the following videos, we will try to recreate this portfolio (some spreads) in Adobe InDesign, so stay tuned.

    Hey! thanks for this great video! I was looking for some ciritcal view on portfolios. I’m currently trying to find out how one could make the lives of architects a lot easier and it fits the topic. I have two very simple questions therefore:
    1. As architect trying to find your dream job, what are the 2 biggest issues you’re dealing with?
    2. Regarding getting a (better) job as an architect, what would you wish for more than anything else?
    What do you think? Thanks so much in advance - looking forward to reading your answers!

    • @lets_architecture
      @lets_architecture  4 года назад

      Are we talking about 'architects' or 'architecture students'? Because, there is a huge difference for what each of them should focus on. It's just that here in the UK, it's is ILLEGAL to call yourself an 'architect' unless you have passed ARB/RIBA Part III exam. Im not "an architect" yet. There is a high chance that I've misunderstood the questions, so if it's the case please ask again.
      1: Do you mean the issues one deals with when making a portfolio? Well the main issue with EVERY portfolio (regardless if it's a student or a professional), and it's "How to tell as much as possible with as little as possible". We hold dear every piece of work that we've done, and we want to show it all, but this makes pages overcrowded and unprofessional. So we have to reduce our work to bare minimum, and the works should speak for itself. The "dream job" is too vague. For some the 'dream job' is a huge commercial office like Foster+Partners, for others (like me) it's a smaller office like 6A Architects or 31/44. The role of 'an architect' is different in these places. Plus it depends on specific people, some are more "concept+theory" types, some are more "materials+details" types, or "technology" types. The portfolio is our "sale brochure", does the employer see what they need in you? This is the main question one should be asking themselves. So I guess the second biggest issue is "how to tailor one's portfolio for a specific job".
      2: Again not really sure what do you mean. What I would wish from what, the portfolio, the job, the employer?
      Can you rephrase these please.

    Am currently a junior, in high school and just got an internship at local firm, they are also paying me, which I surprise, mainly because am a junior in high school, and haven’t even gone to college yet. Even tho it is 7.50$ an hour, but I just think it’s cool. A can use my designs that I made during my internship and put in the profile so, I can get in my dream college of Cornell university.

    • @lets_architecture
      @lets_architecture  4 года назад +1

      SO SORRY about this extremely late reply. The comment was lost between others. It's probably too late for you, but for anyone else, YES. As I've said in the video, your "getting into university" portfolio should show your interest in architecture. Drawings, photos, internships, anything that shows "this person is really interested in architecture". Managing to secure an internship before going to uni is quite rare, it shows that you are at the very base is good for them, and it shows your interest in the profession, so DEFINETLEY include it. HOPE YOU GOT IN.

    • @lets_architecture
      @lets_architecture  4 года назад +1

      @@noodlenomnom6746 well, the trick is to recreate a real photography setup, but in a virtual world. You need to use real-world scale, and real-world "lenses" (Corona or vRay have that option). Look at studio photography setup. You need a continuous sheet as your backdrop, then you light only the lower portion with the model on, which leaves the darker top portion in the back. Hopefully, this answers it, please tell me if I haven't explained it well enough. I've had plenty of requests to make a tutorial on these "physical model" CGIs, so I will do it soon. I've also just uploaded a new video on my Masters portfolio. Every "physical model" there is 100% CGI (Except 'Transcription model'). Workshops were closed, so I had to fake it.

    • @lets_architecture
      @lets_architecture  5 лет назад +2

      Hi I can only talk about the UK. The straight forward answer is the Bartlett UCL, however it's more of a conceptual uni. You see I prefer universities that are more about real buildings rather than ideas, so I'd rather go to Bath or The Cass (London Met.). Actually this is where I am going to. There are many variables, course (bachelors vs masters), type (real buildings vs concept), city (london vs somenthing else), facilities (tech vs traditional) ect. In terms of scholarships, the better the uni the more money they have, so more financing opportunities. Hopefully this was helpful.

      Hey, what software do you use to create your portfolio? I'd recommend Adobe InDesign, it give you plenty of compression options when you export your file. You can also compress the final PDF file in Adobe Acrobat Reader DC. Alternatively there are websites that can compress your document. Generally speaking portfolios are quite 'heavy' because of all the images. Hopefully this helps.

      The subject? Masters of Architecture (RIBA Part 2). The Uni? I've applied to a couple, UCL (this portfolio was tailored for them, and I did NOT get in), Manchester, Bath, Westminster and London Met. I haven't heard from others so not sure yet.

      @@lets_architecture Hard luck James! But thanks for a great video. Going through a similar process to what you did. Whats the talk around town about the AA. If by a far reach I'm able to making funding work I'm needing to choose between them and YSOA. Best of luck with the rest! Regards from South Africa.

      No p mate. The AA is very good, not good as it was back in the days but still a very solid place. Yeah it's a private uni so you have to pay yourself. Here in the UK we can get a loan to go to uni but not if it's a private one. I did get accepted by all mentioned above and I decided to go to London Met. So hopefully there will be more videos about Architecture Masters in the future. Thank you and good luck to you too.

      Haha, yeah I was so sh!t for the first 2 years of uni that I've nearly dropped out too. If you enjoy it then keep fighting, and the results will come. At some point I will show the actual portfolio that was submitted, and it's much worse that this, trust me! Good luck and LETS ARCHITECTURE !

    Another young 'RUclipsr-designer' with their head planted firmly up their ass. If you have talent - it shows. If you cannot draw, then you have a handicap or sorts, although design reflects communication of ideas however it is presentated. There are other means to convey ideas/concepts. - NOT Self-gratifying pretty pictures. As a tutor of many, many years I have seen everything through presentation - including striptease - by a male. Nonetheless, the loose meaning of the word: 'talent' always shines through, regardless of whether you have great presentation skills of not. Contemporary young people lack talent. They want it all now along with a quick-fix. One of the best submissions I witnessed was an applicant named: 'Charles Hopper'; or 'Chopper' as he preferred to be called. For his presentation, he took a polythene bag of excrement, tied it off, pinned it to the wall, took-up a baseball bat, then proceeded to strike the bag until it exploded all over the room covering most people. Having regained his composure after his exertion, Chopper merely stated: "Ladies and Gentlemen, I call this work: "Beating the shite out of the bag"'. He gained entry as we all knew that he had 'it'. Sadly, 'it' was not to be. Chopper eventually ended-up in mental care such was his abstract creative mind-set, but not before one of his finest works: sitting naked on a beautiful cake created as a perfect replica of Corbusier's 'Villa Savoye'. Again, he called this: "Masculine Creampie". The subtle wit of 'whacking-off in the dark' was not lost of those who understood Hans Anderson's tale of the 'Emperor’s New Clothes'. Louis - the Sun King had the same with Versailles. If not for Mansard, the building would never have evolved as it has over the years. Same with Frédéric-Auguste Bartholdi - Statue of Liberty, and Jørn Utson - Sydney Opera House (competiiont presentation submitted on the back of a Napkin) - et al. So, give this video as miss as it shoe-horns you into one aspect of what some people believe to be design. Van Gogh daubed. Nonetheless, until you have seen; in the flesh, one of his canvasses painted during lonely afternoons out in the countryside in and around Arles, then one has never experienced the joy of colour giving so much reference to 'being' and 'life'. If you want to whack-off, then create a picture book portfolio, otherwise, be yourself = design comes in a variety of flavours.
    PS: I edit my comments as the author of this video probably means well - to help those people who are a little lost, thus bringing them into the fold of what people expect in general as a design portfolio. A form of gaining one's 'foot-in-the-door'. Regardless, I still maintain, that if you have 'it'. Talent shows through however you attempt to communicate it. If you do not hold an abundance of talent, then become something else, as Design is one of the toughest careers in life. Both between you and your clients, and you and yourself. There is no retirement package.

      True, that is a lot of text. It could only be justified in an academic portfolio, although even then it's still on a larger end of the scale.
