An excellent piece of videography, we got confident narration, a look at the subject from every angle, both it and the presenter in centre frame, an uncluttered, rotating, industrial background, a steady, handheld camera. Apprentice videographers should rerun that clip and learn. What's all too often the alternative, some stationary, full-frame or too distant talking head going blah blah blah. I ride a 1995, S2 Thuderbolt, tricked up. Complete with age-hardened rubber engine mounts !!
Your documentary is a gift to the motorcycling community... I was absolutely hooked by this. You put an enormous amount of time putting this together, and the amount of research.... really, hats off to you! :) Looking forward to PART 2. -future EBR 1190 owner
I say it in past tense since they don't make new products anymore of course. no doubt, I'd love to own a Buell, although it would be way too big and heavy for me.
pure junk due to the sportster engine. the last 1125r was close but still too little too late. They were trying to use an air cooled engine until the 1125r, which is unbridled stupidity in the realm of HARLEY

I just learned about your documentary yesterday when Buell was interviewed by ADVRider.com founder Chris MacAskill. He highly recommended it and I can see why. Thanks for the work!
Imagine what Harley could have been if they let the NOVA project continue, they would be a force to be reckon with. Im not a v-twin cruiser hater but man an American V4 Sportster type cruiser would be amazing.
Great work! Outstanding account of the Buell saga. By the way, that's my "hometown" of Santa Paula California @2:56. Across from that railroad station is a statue of two motorcycle riders who raced around town warning residents when the San Francis damn broke in 1928 sending a wall of water down the valley.
I owned an ‘05 buell xb9sx for a year. Such a pleasure. I felt as though I owned and rode a special piece of motorcycle history and engineering. A special motorcycle for sure
As a former owner of a Buell bought new of a show room floor in 07 what killed Buell was HD salesman and motorcycle media . A real shame to it was a great bike.
Backtracked to the first two parts in the series to mash the "like" buttons. I have recently learned how much time it takes to edit, not even being able to compete with the quality of your work, and I applaud you. Top notch.
How many of us grew up with BMX or Sk8 at this point? My Pap was a Harley guy that used to hill climb the local coal pits back in the day with those 'Bubble Face Helmets' and AMF tech that would make a noob wince at the thought of pushing a bike home out of the woods to fix it and make it to work in the morning. I ride a first year 636, but I have love for the Beull Blasts and Yamaha V-Max's. These Italian bikes are so smooth in the turns as well. We are living in the best times right now. I still remember as a young lad going for a ride around the block on the gas tank of an old FLT full dresser with my Grandmother yelling, "He's gonna fall off Rusty!" and my Pap responding, "I'll pick him up if he does, now hold onto the bars kid". It seemed like outer space travel to me and I laughed/cried while asking to go again. At this point, I've taught so many people how to ride a bike with a clutch, drive a stick, cantilever steer, pull out on hills, or just give a little bravery. It all comes back to that day. My little brother has a Harley that is worth 5 of my old box of parts Ninja now and I still laugh thinking about the day I taught him how to ride a bicycle with him halfway down the block yelling, "You can let go now". Your random but concerted points in your videos really take me back and show how much you do truly care about the motorcyclist community. Thank you for taking the time to spread the true spirit of blowing off steam, exploring new places, taking a chance, or whatever it means to those of us out there.
Thanks for the video there was a lot more details in it than I have heard before on Buell. Ive owned an 08 1125r for a 6 years now. Its been a great machine
Camaro Rick this is a late comment but how comfortable is your 1125 for a few hour trip? I am looking at trading my sportster for an 08 1125r. The cruiser just isn’t comfortable to me. Plus after seeing a lot of what happened to buell over the years, I am over owning a Harley.
@Illestrator, I don't know if you ever check the comment section of older pieces, but I hope so. This is the third time I have watched this piece, and I enjoy it more each time. It's put together really well, and I dig your sense of humor! I learned a ton from this work as well, and that is what I like the most. Great job on the research! The unearthing of the Nova project was very interesting to me, as I had heard of this before but never in any detail. Was it even real? Well Hell yeah it was! And yes, just imagine if they had decided to commit to it? History could have, and most likely would have been changed. That pesky hindsight... Anyway, thanks for the whole series on Mr. Buell. He was so close, wasn't he? I feel like he made some significant contributions to the industry over the years so it's fitting to acknowledge the work. Good on ya, lad!
My dude said "Those angry triangles that sound like hairdryers"!!!!!😶😯😆☠ Seriously you deserve a 100 million followers. You my friend have me fall in love with RUclips again!
Wow! Absolutely amazing!! Another well prepared & presented piece... I've seen & heard about the brand, but had no clue of its origin... I'm thristin for part 2 😁👍🏼
Can't wait for part 2!!! Erik Buell is so innovative, I love learning all the history. You've done a great job with this! BTW... Almost too bad you passed on the XB12R. I have one just like the one in the beginning of your video. Super fun bike!
Another great video, I could sit through a lecture with you at the lead all day, every factual video you make is easily read and easy to understand, keep up the great work!
By the time the Nova bikes were ready for production they were already obsolete. Trev Dealey, who was one of the oldest and largest HD dealers rode the final prototype and told them not to build them.
Ok who's the one idiot that disliked this! Your documentaries are simply art. The content is amazing, I learn something every time. The editing that you do...unprecedented. Straight entertaining. I appreciate the hard work, hours of research and time behind a screen. Thank you! I would've paid admission. Keep up the great work.
Buell...The best bikes America has ever produced. Rejected by the public who prefer to suck up to massive advertising and social acceptance. We lose because we do not sufficiently support small businesses like Buell. They are Americana, which we are diluting away.
A bit of a clarification here on that Nova project. It wasn't so much the "Bottom line" aspect, but rather the fact that AMF had been effectively assfucking Harley for years and they had no choice but to buy the company back at a loss and recover on their own. So harley had no choice at the time but to care about the bottom line so that they could effectively survive. The EVO engine is the Engine that Saved Harley-Davidson, because no one was making radial(Knife and Forke) Pushrod operated VTWins stock bikes anymore. It was Harley's alone, and S&S was making old and outdated VTwins. These engines are what defined the generations of custom bikes that you see all over the country. From bobbers to diggers to choppers and wild oldschool hardtails, if you wanted something to chop and play with after this era, you needed the EVO. AMF nearly ran Harley into the ground. That's where the "harley isn't reliable" myth comes from, because it reaches back to the AMF era that nearly destroyed the company. NOVA being dropped wasn't just them being greedy, it was part of them just out right trying to make sure they survive AMF's destructive behavior.
Thank you for the historical insight. This juncture is a good time to remind ourselves that too many automotive companies have not been owned by honest enthusiasts but by money-grubbing charlatens. Think Norton, MG-Rover both of England, DeLorean of Northern Ireland. Eric Buell is a good man unappreciated by H-D.
To understand to Buell chassis layout, view the Buell Uniplanar motorcycle frame pattents, easily found and free to view. you earned my sub my friend, been watching your videos one after another and i like your mind and passion, man after my own heart, awesome videos thanks for sharing.
This was the best video I have seen all day. I hope to hear about the buell blast in a video. They were a 500cc bike that was slightly bigger than a grom. I got to sit on one last year and they were actually surprisingly comfy for the size. Anyway. good video. Looking forward to the next one.
I almost bought one years ago but the lack of a title made me run. I'm pretty sure in a few years we'll see Eric Buell pioneered another idea that Honda capitalized on.
I had a buell xb9 awhile ago. I always liked it. It was a unique combination of chassis and motor. I’m into muscle cars and I liked the thumpy exhaust note.
What a good video.. you should do a vid on the factory turbo craze of the eighties no one's done it yet..and I haven't really found that much on it.. it's a job for you
Awesome piece once again. I am still going to own an XB12 Lightning one day. I think they are so awesome. Before I got the 'Bird, I was looking for a nice one, but they are kind of rare here.
My boy! Good as usual ! I wanted to get a buell at one point in time but parts were unfathomable expensive for maintenance. Now it would be a pain to track down parts
lucky decisions yeah I love my buell 1125r but I'm going to have to sideline it if I want to last. Once that engine is worn out that's it. There are no rebuild parts available and some parts are becoming harder and harder to find.
Yes and no. It had a strong aftermarket but it is dwindling due to lack of new sales and declining numbers of bikes on the road. St paul Harley Davidson in Minnesota and Twin motorcycles in the Netherlands are the two main sources of new parts these days.
I just sold my XB12 and parts weren't a huge issue but finding a mechanic who will work on them professionally is s fucking pain. I do the work my self but if you're only used to basic maintenance a Buell isn't for you. Someone like chaseontwowheels shouldnt own a Buell lol.
I just got a versys 650. Before i had a bandit 1200. That thing is insanely fun! I treat it like a dual sport. If you're still looking for a bike check out that little kawi
I remember one day i was commuting to work on my 05 cbr 600rr.. I was stopped at a stop light. I heard the rumble of what I thought was a harley coming up behind me. It turned out to be a Buell! It was interesting. First and only one ive ever seen so far.
Excellent as always. The problem with Eric Buell is that he was perpetually walking the tightrope between masterful innovator & oddball. Another issue was (IMHO) styling - Buells look crazy - too crazy! PS: I'm certain that I've seen images of the Nova, and I'm also kinda sure that it raced - I'm probably wrong, but I seem to recall that it did.
Yeah they are very much oddball bikes but I feel like maybe the harley motors were a crux to buell, like people wanted an american sports bike....and got one... but with a rather antiquated engine. The images were from the Nova but I could not find VIDEO. I don't know if any exists online, if so its well hidden lol
- The illestrator - Ah! Gotcha - I don't recall ever seeing an video of the Nova either, so no worries there. For me the saddest thing about Eric Buell was the fact that he wanted (really badly) to produce the American sportsbike, and HD were the only players in the market. I'd like to have seen what would have happened if he had teamed up with a foreign manufacturer OR even a foreign company with a strong American base. Imagine Buell & Yoshimura, or Buell & Moriwaki, (for instance) working around a Suzuki, Kawasaki or Honda engine.. The Japanese could keep their hands off if it suited them - no risk. If course the big four would have been a possibility, but I couldn't imagine the engineers & R & D in Japan going for his ideas. We'll never know now, but HD ate up so many of his productive years. Can't blame a patriotic American for trying to do what he did, but it might have been better to walk away.
I bought a 02' M2 Cyclone back in 06' loved that bike. I was my first sport bike and they were always my favorite looking. Didn't have a very high rev range but had pleanty of tourqe. Felt like it could tow a trailer up the canyon no problem.
That cameraman with the vrod was like "get away from me, please stop following me around this bike"
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂

Agreed! Show this to all my homies. HD next please!
I am a Buell addict and love to hear the details of the old days. Can’t wait for part two, thanks for doing these.
I ride a"Buell Firebolt xb12r and love it, owned and ridden for 8 years and never get tired of it
You're getting a huge shoutout for this on ADVRider right now. Great work man!
This was dope can't wait for part 2

I like how they look. The wheelbase and how everything looks smooshed together. Ive seen some dope custom XB's too
Is it true HD stop selling Buell parts? I wanna buy a Buell, but I'm concerned about parts availability.
an ass-burning pile of shit
Bruh, as a devout Buell XB rider and lover THANK YOU for making this cool assed video! 👍👍🔥👌🤘❤️

The side effect of researching all of this makes me want a Buell now more than ever.

Do one on John Britten.
This video needs way more likes for the work you’ve put into this great job my dude I throughly enjoyed the series 👌

Great Video!!....Very informative!!!...Love it bro!!...Cant wait for part 2
Thank you
Among your best videos, great information. Thanks!
Buell is a story about doing the best you can with what you have.
Erik Buell is kinda like the John DeLorean of the bike world
Sir, that scurrilous remark is a friggin insult. Do good research before exposing yourself as an idiot.
I own a Buell and it is bad ass! Keep up the good work illustrator! Peace from down under
you earned my sub my friend, been watching your videos one after another and i like your mind and passion, man after my own heart, awesome videos thanks for sharing.
"angry triangles that sound like hairdryers"
LMAO.
This was great as all your ish is. I always thought the Buells we're unique and awesome. I'd totally own one.
Looking forward to part 2!!
Excellent video bud. Love Buell and I hope to have another some day.
This was the best video I have seen all day. I hope to hear about the buell blast in a video. They were a 500cc bike that was slightly bigger than a grom. I got to sit on one last year and they were actually surprisingly comfy for the size. Anyway. good video. Looking forward to the next one.
You might be the first person I've seen speaking positively about the Blast lol. It seems a lot of people thought it was lackluster
I almost bought one years ago but the lack of a title made me run. I'm pretty sure in a few years we'll see Eric Buell pioneered another idea that Honda capitalized on.
I did my MSF Basic Riders Course on a blast
Love the buells and EBR, thanks for doing this
Hehehe. I am one of the biggest Buell brand fans having owned two of their bikes. This video is the best. I made me laugh quite a bit. Thanks!
This is documentary quality. Keep it up my friend.
Another great video. Keep them coming brother.
Advrider.com interview with Erik Buell brought me here. Great documentary!
when is the part 2 gonna be posted? btw this vid was amazeballs.
I had a buell xb9 awhile ago. I always liked it. It was a unique combination of chassis and motor. I’m into muscle cars and I liked the thumpy exhaust note.
your mini-docs are fucking outstanding. keep up the good work!
Fantastic work. Thoroughly enjoyed it.
YES! New content. Thanks bro. Makes me want a buell
What a good video.. you should do a vid on the factory turbo craze of the eighties no one's done it yet..and I haven't really found that much on it.. it's a job for you
Q U A L I T Y content here! Any time I want one of your videos I feel like I learn something.
All your docu’s are top notch
great job putting this video together!

Yes and no. It had a strong aftermarket but it is dwindling due to lack of new sales and declining numbers of bikes on the road. St paul Harley Davidson in Minnesota and Twin motorcycles in the Netherlands are the two main sources of new parts these days.
Not really. Finding internal parts is rare and aftermarket is not too keen on supporting a platform with minimal amounts of sales!
I just sold my XB12 and parts weren't a huge issue but finding a mechanic who will work on them professionally is s fucking pain. I do the work my self but if you're only used to basic maintenance a Buell isn't for you. Someone like chaseontwowheels shouldnt own a Buell lol.
I absolutely love the FXR. Probably gonna sell my sporty next year for one.
What a rare talent. Innovator
That video was the shit! You keep making these "the history of" I'll keep watching
the history vids are dope man. !
I just got a versys 650. Before i had a bandit 1200. That thing is insanely fun! I treat it like a dual sport. If you're still looking for a bike check out that little kawi

KRS-ILLESTRATOR! Knowledge reigns supreme!
Love your style of presentation. Reminds me of Colion Noir but with your own originality.
I've heard this before from someone. Not a huge fan of that guy but I'll accept that
- The illestrator - I love your videos man!! Why arent a fan of colion?
Dam man hats off on making this video! excellent work. !!!!
Just love your videos. Informative, concise, entertaining. Subbed for life. Please get a good mic though
I love story time.
No joke. Fan girling a little.

Johnny Sanchez sounds like its ur favorite part too...
I remember one day i was commuting to work on my 05 cbr 600rr.. I was stopped at a stop light. I heard the rumble of what I thought was a harley coming up behind me. It turned out to be a Buell! It was interesting. First and only one ive ever seen so far.
I saw the same thing a long time ago... Later I was searching online trying to figure out what this "sportbike with a harley engine" was lol
My Beull is best bike I've ever owned
Awesome vid. keep em comin. Also you should talk about EBR motorcycles while you are doing Buell.
Yes I will, I want to encompass the whole Buell timeline
Yo brooklyn has been wildin for respect with the fire works
Well done...I definitely learned some shit! Looking forward to part 2!
Well.... Buell had a very winning bike with that 1125 in one of those AMA series. Another up and down for the man.
I bought a 02' M2 Cyclone back in 06' loved that bike. I was my first sport bike and they were always my favorite looking. Didn't have a very high rev range but had pleanty of tourqe. Felt like it could tow a trailer up the canyon no problem.
Interesting🧐, now where’s part two! Lol. Shit fire how you be putting these vids together. 🤘
Thanks, currently writing part 2
Nice film making!
I'm already a subscriber.
GREAT video! Thanks man.
