Building a machine with an i7-12700k and a ASUS ROG Strix Z690-A Gaming, I don’t see the worth in ddr5 at its price for the foreseeable future and enjoy the look of this mobo.
I originally went with the Asus Prime A, but then got a £75 voucher for a Strix F so took this one instead. I was happy to see that what you would have recommended as well!
This video just spoonfed me the information I was wondering about the compatibility issues of the upcoming mobos 'cus as soon as there's new cpu in town, mobos are always the first & big concern. Thanks a lot man.. really appreciate all your videos!
Thank goodness. I've been looking for someone I'm subscribed to to talk about these boards and help me sort out which board I may want to buy. Thanks Jason.
Exciting times!! I am so excited to see benchmarks of these chips and see how that price/performance ratio is looking in a few weeks/months after things have settled. I am currently rocking an i7-5820k, so I'm definitely interested in a potential upgrade!!! Looks pretty sweet! Great video. Thanks for all the great info. I'll definitely check out that Gigabyte Gaming X board if I end up upgrading (which I probably won't, yet, lol).
Thanks so much for the info! This was really helpful. I've always been a PC gamer, but have had friends help out (or they do it entirely) with my builds in the past. I'm taking a shot at picking my own parts, so this has been great to identify what features are desirable/necessary vs. what am I overspending on.
Great video for any one wanting to try out the new Tech. I waited 10 years to upgrade and two weeks after I do they have new better tech out. Got to love the way the computer world never stops improving, which is a good thing, most of the time it's six months before new stuff but my timing was simply bad. Not sure I would have went with the 12 Gen any way, it's to new, i'll let the bugs get worked out. Thanks for the info on the 4080 Audio, that is what my new board has and I'm going to go read up on it.
Looking for more budget boards, the B660 that will be released later. Maybe with an i3. Hoping someone will market a B666 and call it 'One Hell of a Board!' With a red PCB.
I have never used Gigabyte boards in the past. In my current builds, I am using a X570 Master in my main system and a X570l Pro ITX board in the other build for my child. What should I say, really good boards, nice quality, effective VRM, with good value/money. Also the bios support is fine. The RGB Fusion software and the general included software is - in my opinion - not as good as the MSI or Asus solutions. But I am happy with these boards 👍🏻
Best tech channel on the site; I love your videos, Jason. My only regret is not finding them sooner. Thanks for making this content not only digestible but enjoyable! Anyway, now that my fanboy is showing, I humbly seek your counsel. I won Newegg shuffle (finally) after months of entering and bought a 3070 TI and the Gigabyte Z590 Aorus Master ATX, which is only compatible w/ intel 10th & 11th gen CPUs. Can I make this work or should I try to sell the motherboard somewhere and get a new one compatible with either Ryzen 5600x or Alder lake? Since I'm relatively inexperienced (this is my first PC build) and I'm spending a pretty penny due to the current market, I don't want to settle for too little, ya feel? Plus DDR5 is tempting. Excited to finally have the GPU but the bundles are killing me.
I think you'll see a few discounts on 10th and 11th gen CPUs. I'd see about picking up an i5 11600K or i7 11700K and putting together a build with DDR4 memory (DDR5 is very out of stock, very expensive, and not really worth it). That's a nice motherboard, and I doubt you'll get much for it right now. But if you want, you can try selling it and go Alder Lake or Ryzen 5000.
@@PCBuilderChannel Wow, thank you Jason! While I initially wanted to kinda future proof but for my first build, I think the Z590 Master will suffice. I wanted Ryzen at first; I dabble w/ music production but don't do any video editing or intense production, so my focus would be gaming. With that in mind, Rocket Lake should work out fine, especially if I can find some sweet discounts. And I feel like I would lose money and time trying to sell that motherboard. I really appreciate your advice!
Great video! I did not find a comparison of z690 motherboards in my native language. I started Googling and I'm very glad that I got your video. I bought Gigabyte Gaming X based on your recommendations and am now waiting for delivery. Thanks!
WOW thank you so much, you saved me from a huge mistake. I have the Z690 Taichi and I was about to order the DeepCool Ak620 air cooler when I found out that they say it is "compatible with LGA 1700" but in order for it to be compatible, you'd need to be sent a whole new bracket for it to work. Thank goodness because now I either have to make sure they send one with the cooler or get a completely different cooler all together! Thanks! I love your channel!
One thing watching through this video that I haven't really heard much about before... What do the different power stages for motherboards mean? Where can you usually find that stuff? If you're looking at similar price points is a higher power stage something you should almost always opt for, or does it entirely depend on all of the other components you're considering? Is it actually about making sure a board has baseline support for components, or is it more specifically important for overclocking? Kinda similarly, just how important is VRM quality?
That is one area that I thought about covering but decided it was more a CPU thing. Basically Intel is switching to AMD's methodology of constant boost states (about time). All the z690 motherboards that I'm aware of come with constant boost power states fully enabled so you don't even need to worry about the other power state as it is a relic of the past. You can always check in the bios to ensure you are in constant boost (P2).
Greater ability to provide high levels or current in a stable manner. The more stages and the more amperage they can provide, the better the stable overclock you can potentially achieve. Generally as long as the board is around 10+ power stages then normal overclocking should be stable. You do not need the insane 110A+ 19+ power stage boards unless you're doing something like liquid nitrogen overclocking.
Let's goo!!!! HYPE! The Preorder bundle I'm getting: Asus TUF GAMING Z690-PLUS WIFI D4, ATX Intel Core i7-12700K, LGA1700, 3.60 GHz, 25MB, Boxed Kingston 32GB (2 x 16GB) FURY Renegade, DDR4 3600MHz, CL16, 1.35V Pretty good upgrade considering I have been using i5-4690k for 7 years ^^ No worries, it will come to some other use! I will try as best as possible use parts as long as their life span can hold!
Hey Jason, in the beginning of the ultra budget section, you recommended avoiding the MSI Pro Z690-P (~$180), but what about the Z690-A ($220)? I was able to snag it at Best Buy locally and am still waiting for an LGA 1700 bracket from NZXT. However, I am wondering if the P version is something you would recommend against as well. Personally, I’m just trying to get something going on DDR4 for now so I can utilize this 3080TI, and then upgrade to a higher quality DDR5 board in 2 years or so after the memory prices come down. Also, thx for the content! I’ve watched through this video alone several times lol.
Hello, my brother is planning on building a gaming pc and I am planning on building one too. He gave me a list of parts that he planned on using and I was wondering if this is a good build because I plan building something similar or maybe better. This is my first time building a pc and I'm kind of paranoid as to what to get or what's good. Here's the list: • Cooler: NZXT kraken z73 • Ram: 32gb vengeance RGB pro sl (white) • SSD: Seagate 4tb barracuda • Motherboard: Asus TUF x570 plus wifi • Power: corsair 850w • Case: lian li mid tower dynamic • Cpu: Ryzen 7 5800x • Graphics card: not sure what to get • Fans: lian li 120 (x9) • Cables: lian li strimmer cables Thank you! I am hoping you could help because your videos seem very informative and you helped a lot of people! Thanks again.
I was partly expecting an AMD announcement early this week to spoil Intel's launch, but so far haven't heard anything. Should be late Q4 2021 or early Q1 2022 last I heard.
This was harder than I thought. I am looking for a DDR4 board for the i9-12900k but almost all the recommendations I have found this far uses the I225-V network chip, which I have heard nothing but bad stuff about. And most of the Realtek network controller boards seem to not have the best VRM for the i9.
@@mikerzisu9508 For gaming? If you already have fast DDR4 the gains are virtually non existent. Couple of games that you might notice if everything else in your system is optimal. Same still applies with 13th gen although the 13900k is probably better with DDR5. (gaming, I'm not talking about any other activities)
Love the video! I jumped the gun and pre ordered an i7-12700k. Not sure if i should go DDR5 or DDR4. If DDR5 is twice as expensive i might as well buy twice the amount of DDR4 memory right? What would you recommend?
Just found your channel a few days ago, already one of my favourites. I'm quite the luddite and your explanations dont make me want to beat my head against the wall in confusion as much as many other channels. I understand SIs make it much easier for people to build computers because they more or less ensure compatibility and they assemble the machine in exchange for a fee, but are there (trustworthy) companies that take it a step further in exchange for a larger fee? Like I tell them what my current PC specs are, and the kinds of things I want to do with my new machine, and they pick the parts to get me what I want/need? Or is the only option to keep inundating myself with information and hope that someday down the line I know enough to use a SI with confidence.
Glad you are enjoying the channel! I don't have a ton of knowledge of custom builders but I would check out Skeytech IBuyPower and CyberPower PC. You might also want to check out our best prebuilt gaming video on the channel to see if a prebuilt is right for you
@@PCBuilderChannel I'll check them out. Most "custom builders" I've found help with "I want etched glass and custom RGB pipes for water cooling" (not me at all). Looking more for someone I can tell "I play XYZ games, want the machine to last 4+ years, don't give one hoot about RGB lighting, etc." and they pick the parts and assemble it. Pre-built seems great if I knew what specs I want/need. In the meantime I'll just keep watching :)
I'm getting the 260 euro gigabyte Z690 aorus G DDR5 for audio production and casual gaming with an 12700K and evga3060TI. Anything I should know mate? I will overclock it 200mhz. I need the 4 M2 slot heatsink. I don't need thunderbolt now, I may add a thunderbolt expansion for a RME audio interface in the future. Maybe the RME will be PCI. Will it handle audio production well? And it's white!!!! Together with the Corsair 5000D airflow + 7 fans and a 360mm closes loop NXT X73 radiator. Thanks bro, I love these small channels with high quality content! Have a nice time I hope gents n' madams!
I have a z690-f motherboard, 12600k cpu and 3090 rtx msi gpu. What ddr5 rgb ram should I get please considering these factors. I got a kraken z73 cooler and 2tb Samsung pro ssd
This is shaping up to be one of the messiest launches I’ve ever witnessed. The cooler compatibility situation is startlingly bad. Most sites have limited info on components for LGA1700. DDR5 hardly seems to exist. And Intel sets a same day NDA as launch!? This whole thing is painful. Was looking forward to it, but honestly Zen3D might be my next build.
I know Noctua/Scythe have pledged to give free mounting hardware for new sockets with proof of purchase, or you can buy for a few $. Not sure about other manufacturers. I'm kind of thinking about asking Scythe for an LGA 1700 kit for my Fuma 2 even though I'm not buying Alder Lake. Just so I have it for free.
Not only its hard to get but its probably terrible value compared to DDR4 3200/3600. That i5 might be really good but you are paying 100$ more for motherboard 100$ more for ram so might aswell compare it to like a r9
@@Mr.Danny2 Yeah but depending how the math works out, going DDR5 could get you on the better platform so that in a few years when you're looking to upgrade, you actually have an upgrade path, unlike DDR4, and thus end up saving more money long-term because you can keep your motherboard and just do CPU/RAM upgrades whenever it's good for you.
Bought everything but can't find any information about native lga 1700 coolers... this is so stupid. Corsair announced an overpriced LCD AIO without any release date but they are already shipping them to customers lol
Its generally hard for me to sit through a 25 minute video when people talk fluff (not this video)---I appreciate your style of continuous useful information. Watched the whole thing straight through. If you post more videos just like this (which I am sure you have) I'm sure I and many others will continuously watch your stuff. Thanks again for useful content.
Hi everyone in case it helps the ASUS Strix Z690-E model specifically is one of the only boards that has an ONBOARD pci Gen 5 m.2 SSD slot instead of those somewhat clunky add-on cards
I just bought my very first gpu a Msi Gaming Z Trio 3080 and I want to pair it with Intel i7 12600k what would be the best motherboard for it? Or if you think I should go with an Amd, and what motherboard would go nicely?
I'm not sure if you want to try operating it without that. If you are looking for an all White motherboard without the water cooling, check out the MSI Z690 Force which is all white - link in the description.
@@PCBuilderChannel I just ordered the MSI Carbon Wifi Z690 because the Force is out of stock until mid November. Do you happen to know what the main differences is? (I notice the Force is slightly cheaper)
i remember Z490 had the same issue with SFX boards where you either had terrible ones to avoid, or really good ones that were too expensive, without any middle ground. i was trying to make a MATX build for my dad around that time. ended up going AMD instead with a nice B550M Mortar board that just hit that sweetspot on price and features.
IMO, the mATX prices are highway robbery right now. But that's because most board partners seemed to avoid mATX (no steel legend, tuf gaming, bazooka series mATX motherboards).
Is the gigabyte gaming X still a good choice or has it been overtaken by anything else? I was looking at the MSI mpg gaming edge and msi tomahawk and am torn between the three. Currently the gaming X is still considerably cheaper but I'm worried I might be missing out. I have i5-12600k, rtx 3080 12gb (was going to get a 3060ti/3070ti but the prime sales were just too good) and am sticking with ddr4
I subscribed since I'm in the market for a new motherboard/CPU. I have an MSI B360 Gaming Plus with an i3-8350k so it's about that time.. Looking forward to an update to this video, thank you for this really informative video.
Hello, this has nothing to do with this video but I have a question regarding the differences that the monitor 4k ASUS TUF vs the Amazon 4-series 4k fire tv would have on my experience in playing my PS5. Can you answer me that?
Im using now Gigabyte Z590 Gaming X and its very OK board! There are some Bios problems (with 4 populated RAM slots) because only XMP 3200mhz is working good, all higher MHz's are unstable... With 2 populated slots all fine (3733mhz cl16 easy)!
Hey do you think that the DDR4 version of the MSI Z690-P is better than the GIGABYTE Z690 UD DDR4 ? Which one would u recommend ? Thanks for the cool vid too !
I'd recommend the Gigabyte UD if just looking for the cheapest alternative. I like the Gigabyte Gaming X z690 if you want better audio, etc. Remember to fully update the bios to the latest version before making any bios changes, and turn off VMD if your SSD doesn't show up.
Should I buy a motherboard that support both ddr4 & 5? I'm building a PC i know worst timing. I'm in the middle of a gen switch..so should i build now or wait? Again, i don't wanna wait a year or 2years for them to release rtx 4000 n newer cpus.
There are no boards that support both DDR5 and DDR4. You need to choose one or the other. I strongly recommend DDR4 given that DDR5 is virtually unavailable, overpriced, and offers very little advantage.
@@PCBuilderChannel it would be stupid to try to wait for rtx 4000 and let's say ryzen 6000/7000 whatever their title is.. I shouldn't wait for this right?, my plan is to go 3080ti 5950x 64gig ram 1000w power supply.
Hi Jason, 1st time builder here. What do you think is a fairly priced Z690 mobo for i5 12600k. I plan to only use DDR4. I'd like a good audio & enough room for future OC. Thanks!
Alright so question time, I'm at the point where I need a new build this gen. My current setup struggles too much with what I play for me to wait for another gen. If I'm trying to put together a build to last me 3-4 years, is it worth to go DDR5 now, and upgrade to better DDR5 kits in a year or 2 when they're readily available and less expensive overall? Or just stick with DDR4 for the next few years and wait for my next build to upgrade memory?
Check out our new i5 12600k build we launched on the channel today! I think it might help you think through these questions and could serve as a good base for your new build.
Is the asus prime ddr4 version good?? If the ddr5 version is good would the ddr4 version be good? Im looking for a white mobo build around $230 or under for a mobo
Would like to see a video dedicated to the motherboards with integrated monoblocks for high-end custom loop builds. Asus Maximus Extreme Glacial has been the most impressive one I've seen so far; MSI God-like that's apparently the largest Z690 motherboard would be interesting to see having an integrated waterblock SKU, but it's been only teased so far.
Hey , I've got a question . I've got a 3700x , 32 gb ram 3200 mhz cl 16 , a 1650 super , 240hz 1080p monitor , x570 aorus elite motherboard (no wifi) . Should I buy a 5950x , wait for zen 3d , or gather more money and wait for some price drops on gpus ? (for both video editting and gaming)
I see a few things listed as Out Of Stock or Sold Out on Newegg during their pre-sale. Hope availability is good at launch, although I wouldn't be surprised if scalpers are looking for blood in the water.
With one i choose please the GIGABYTE Z690 GAMING X DDR4 or the ASUS TUF GAMING Z690-PLUS D4 or choose for me the best mob under $250 for gaming and game developing . Thank you a lot for wonderful contain
How is the Gigabyte z690 gaming x ddr4? Still recommended? Hearing so many issues. From bios to Ram, to weaker then expected audio despite 1220. While it is loaded spec wise with everything I am looking for. Also is so similar to the Aorus elite(or is same board) but at a big discount with similar vrm. But difference is…no complaints and high reviews. Why is the audio weak? My secondary choice is the asus rog strix a, but at 160€ more is a lot for just WiFi and alc 4080. Third is msi tomahawk…but is same features. But almost 90€ More for WiFi and better vrm is to much it seems.
I go through that one in the video, I recommend it if you don't need the high end onboard audio (if so, I like the Gigabyte Gaming X but it has had some bugs, mostly which have now been worked out). Good budget offering from MSI.
@@PCBuilderChannel Yes thank you for the reply I dont really need the audio I dont use headphones. Only stereo with 3mm jack so I think the msi is the better option for me.
I bought an 11700k with a z590 ultra but I haven’t opened them. I was looking at the aero g gigabyte ddr4 and the 12700k but idk if the vrm will handle the turbo boost at higher sustained level. Would you recommend that setup together? Is it even worth it to upgrade from that? I do video editing, photo editing, gaming, and mild over clocking. I just haven’t built a computer in like 9 years and a lot has changed haha.
I'm thinking about the same board, I'm down to the edge, tomahawk or the gigabyte gaming X. Only need the mobo and a new PSU and I can get started with my new pc
What's your experience with it? It's a great looking board and has a good set of features. I currently use their Z390 Carbon Pro Gaming (no idea if that's the correct order)
hey i know im pretty late but do you think GIGABYTE Z690 GAMING X DDR5 MOTHERBOARD would work well with 17-13700k and 4080 with 32 GB 6000mhz ram? building my first gaming rig and i dont wanna get dissapointed because its being bottleneck'ed or something
I have a question about the Aorus Waterforce 280 X. On PcPartPicker it says that this AIO doesn't support LGA 1700, so I'm a bit confused since you said it is.
Thanks for the super complete review! Would you suggest buying an ASUS ROG STRIX Z690-F GAMING WI-FI DDR5 for an i9 12900K? Right now in my country it's the cheapest board, and it supports previous cooler solutions...
*HELP!* I had planned a build with R5 5600x with some B550M board. The alder-lake release just made things difficult since the new i5-12600K costs the same as an R5 5600x and is quite better. Though the economic Z690s come 100€ more expensive than the economic B550s. And I'll probably end up using a Gen 3 SSD and a DDR4 ram (cheaper) regardless of the CPU and motherboard. So, if I wanna make a PC this November/December should I go for a R5 5600X or an I5-12600K? Is the new generation of AMD coming any time soon?
You could wait until tomorrow for the official results to come out for the i5 and make your decision then after seeing exactly how much extra you're getting
Performance numbers will come tomorrow so I'd just sit tight. I wouldn't be shocked if we see some discounts on Ryzen 5000 CPUs coming soon as AMD often responds with price cuts. But the new Alder Lake CPUs + Mobos are very expensive for sure. Still waiting for official word from AMD on V-Cache Ryzen 5000 refresh, but I've heard Q4 or Q1 (so soon).
@@Unvexed Yep, turns out a build with the Ryzen 7 5800x is more powerful, 50 bucks cheaper and seems to consume half the wattage compared to an i5-12600k build. So unless the i5-12600k has some advantage I haven't seen yet, maybe a gen 11 Ryzen build is still the choice. So hard to choose ᕙ(⇀‸↼‶)ᕗ
@@El_Psy_Kongroo_ Maybe look at more reviews because your info is off. The 12600K is faster for gaming and doesnt draw anything like twice the power vs a 5800x, specifically when gaming. For some reason many reviewers have focused on power draw when stressing the CPU with a synthetic load (yes, Alder lake is very hungry in this use case) - this doesn’t reflect gaming power draw however, as some thankfully do bother to show. *E: Just to add to this, HUB just did a review of the 12600K, for gaming it sat on average between the 5600x and 5800x (closer to the 5800x), and power draw while gaming was LESS than a 5800x.
Looking at this a year later, (i usually start my upgrade cycle about a year after the cpu debuts, and the boards have been out for a while) DDR5 I think isn't that big of a deal, maybe for some 13900k users but for most, especially if you already own some fast CL16 3600MHz or better it's not really worth it. I've used MSI components, mobo's and GPU's, I'm familiar with their software, I'm not that bothered about a few $'s or wringing every last bit of performance, as long as it meets my performance requirements and appeals aesthetically, job done.
I'm standing in line right now before doors open for a 12700k and motherboard. I was aiming for an MSI Pro Z690-A, but now after watching this I'll try to get the Gigabyte Gaming X instead. Thanks for the video, really helpful! I've been standing out in the cold for two hours, one more to go :)
@@PCBuilderChannel Thanks! When I got in the store, there were only TWO motherboards total on shelves. And I managed to get one of them! 12700k and MSI Pro Z690-A Wifi secured :)
Loved the information. I've just bought the Gigabyte z690 gaming X because of your video to pair with my I5 12600k. Thank you for all the usefull information.
i want the i5 12600k, but the z690 is expensive for me and don't plan to do overclocking, instead i thought that it would be great to buy a b660, specifically GIGABYTE B660 Gaming X AX DDR4, it will have problems in the performance if it's not a z690?, do you have a better option? please let me know
Have you been happy with this board?? Heard mixed reviews but just purchased it for my wife's build because I found an awesome price( not as good as yours😂). The cpu I got is i5-12600kf matched with a 6700xt gpu.
Hello, on my new build I have an Intel Core i9 12900K, EVGA 3080 Ti FTW3 Gaming Ultra vid card, a LG C1 55" OLED, and an EVGA - GP Series SuperNOVA 1000W ATX 80 Plus Gold Fully Modular Power Supply. What DDR5 motherboards do you suggest that will allow me to do 4K gaming with the possibility of 120 Hz? I also do video editing, but it is the 4K gaming fps I am Most focused on, the other factors should all be covered enough.
So I'm debating on which motherboard to buy in hopes to be future proof (or as best as I can be...) I'm getting the i9 12900k(s) cpu and have the Lian Li Dynamic Evo case. Looking to support DDR5, spend no more then $800 Any recommendations? I'm was considering the ASUS-ROG-Z69 Carbon...
Thank you for the very insightful videos. Do you have any motherboard suggestions that have ddr4 memory with at least 1 pcie 5.0 slot with pcie x16 v4.0 slots, and has the ability to add a thunderbolt 4 card. Any light you could provide would be greatly appreciated.
That's a pretty unique combo. Most of the boards with a PCIE 5.0 slot have DDR5. Given there aren't even any PCIE 5.0 devices yet, I'd forgo it. Most of the boards have thunderbolt 4 headers.
Thank you very much for your reply. Yes, I did. I would like at the very least 2 pcie version 4 x 16 slots electrically. One 16 lane electrically for a GPU and 2nd x16 slot for an ASUS 4x M.2 adapter card. Unfortunately, all z690 boards drop down to 8x8 lanes electrically when you fill in the first two slots. This is due to resource sharing issues of the chipset, because the 12th gen cpus only having 16 bus lanes. I think I will need to build a threadripper to get enough pcie lanes. Again, thank you for your time.
Thanks for such an informative introduction. I bought Asus Rog Strix z690g gaming Wifi. There is a good deal in my place. We got a free Asus ROG RYUJIN II 240 by buying Asus Rog Strix Z690g motherboard. That is a nice steal. :D
Great and valuable information. Definitely thumbs up. I have learnt quite a lot. I am new to pc building and you have helped me to understand motherboards for this generation.
Thoughts on the Gigabyte Aero G? Trying to decide between that and the Elite DDR4 for an i9. I've bought nothing but Asus for 20+ years but between the fact that the majority of those boards no longer fit Noctura coolers and they're halariously overpriced. Going with Gigabyte for the first time.
If going with an i9, I'd consider getting the Aorus Pro DDR4 (or DDR5) version. 90amp power stages (especially since nobody has done VRM testing just yet). All of the giabyte boards have a 16+1+2 VRM. Gaming X has 60amp power stages, Elite has 70amp, and I believe the Aero G has 70 amp as well but it isn't listed anywhere. i9 is a super power hog, so if you want to overclock I think I'd leaning towards the Aorus Pro as a minimum. Frankly you can get most of the performance with a lot lower power usage with the i7 12700K or KF instead. Hope that helps.
I'm actually looking at the Asus TUF Gaming Z690 Plus, current on sale at $249. You mentioned that it has "weaker features than the Gigabyte Gaming X". Not sure what features are weaker. I'm leaning towards this board because I currently have a Asus Sabertooth p67 TUF board (yea over 10 yrs old - but its still going !) I don't know if the TUF features are that much different than other Asus Prime or the Gigabyte boards. And I'm still wavering between the i5 12600KF and the i7 12700KF ( I already bought an EVGA 3070Ti FTW GPU). And I'm going with DDR4 because the DDR5 is still very high $$ and I'm not an extreme gamer / over clocker, so not sure the performance difference is worth the price difference, for me, between DDR4 and 5. Jason, any advice would be greatly appreciated!! thanks
Im looking to upgrade my PC (I know, late to the party, everyone is releasing new CPU's, GPU's etc but good luck getting those lmao) and im def struggling with picking a motherboard for the i7 12700k. I have had bad experiences with Gigabyte but its 120 euros cheaper then the MSI MPG Z690, but ive always had a good experience with MSI so idunno if I have to spend the 120 extra because its familiar or go with the Gigabyte one that a lot of people say is actually good
Hi I have a quick question, I’m running a i7-12700k setup with an Msi Pro Z690-A wifi DDR4 and for the cooler, I got a lian li Galahad AIO 360 with the plans of using it. However upon watching this, I don’t think it has a mounting kit for lga 1700. I plan on buying a mounting kit for it but I don’t know which one to get. What’s compatible with it?
@@PCBuilderChannel alright i sent a request out and hopefully they respond soon, I have everything except for my case which is coming Monday so I’m super excited to build the system. Thank you very much
Excellent video and thanks for the info... Just a question though... the ASUS PRIME Z690-P I checked the the Asus site, and well it just mentions DDR4 not 5......its not that I really need DDR5 but I would like not to have to change boards after maybe a year or 2. Is it best to maybe wait a bit longer ....or is this a decent motherboard?
There's two versions of it, one for DDR4 and one for DDR5. Personally I'd stick with DDR4 this generation after seeing the test results. No real advantage to DDR5 right now.
@@Geek-jx3gw yeah its really good. Had 1 small issue as it wouldnt detect nvme ssd. Ended up updating bios to version F4 which was straight forward. Been fine since. Went for DDR4 4600 which is plenty fast 👍
I’m building my first gaming pc. I have a Asus Tuf rtx 3070ti and just ordered an intel 12700k. I need to choose an ATX mobo.(ddr4) Any suggestions? I’d like to spend no more than $300. Is it beneficial to get an Asus board to match the Asus gpu?
@@PCBuilderChannel Im going down a rabbit hole about VRM’s. Direct vs. parallel, true power stages, amp ratings, doublers etc. can’t figure out if the Gigabyte Aorus elite, aorus pro, gaming X, or Asus Tuf is the best choice. I want to be able to overclock my 12700k without worries. Also looked at the tomahawk like you mentioned. Ready to pull my hair out.
It's fine, weaker audio codec is the only real difference. If you are using analog speakers/headset then maybe consider the Asus TUF Gaming Z690 or MSI Tomahawk instead. Of course if the Aorus Elite is in stock, that's essentially the same Mobo just better VRMs and wifi.
Thanks for the reply. Only considered the prime based on the price. Think I'll go with the Aorus elite even though Wi-Fis not a big deal to me. Using it for warzone and need all the audio I can get, lol.
Hi! Thinking about getting the i7 12700k and pairing it with either the MSI PRO Z690-A (D4), or the MSI MAG Z690 TOMAHAWK (D4). The Tomahawk is a little bit more expensive but the PRO Z690-A is currently on sale in my country.
I just picked up evga's rtx 3090ti yesterday. I have to upgrade my mb and cpu. I was thinking of going with the i7 12700k as I've heard many times that the i9 runs hit regardless the aio. For motherboards I have been eyeballing the rog 690e but reports of some users z690e's caught on fire. Jayztwocents covered this but that video was from 7 months ago. Maybe asus changed the next shipments since then??
*UPDATES: 1) HWUB Completed Entry Level Z690 VRM Testing. Looks Like Any ASUS, Gigabyte, or MSI Board ATX-sized will support up to a 12900K at acceptable VRM Temps. ASRock testing to come. 2) Z690 is having typical early adopter teething issues with XMP profiles and auto enabling VMD in the bios. Make sure you update to the latest motherboard bios before attempting to make any settings changes (including enabling XMP). If having drive recognition issues, ensure that VMD is disabled in the bios. **

I think i will Be on the fence on this intel stuff. Not an Intel Fans due to its price to Performance
AMD all the way
Building a machine with an i7-12700k and a ASUS ROG Strix Z690-A Gaming, I don’t see the worth in ddr5 at its price for the foreseeable future and enjoy the look of this mobo.
I originally went with the Asus Prime A, but then got a £75 voucher for a Strix F so took this one instead. I was happy to see that what you would have recommended as well!
I preordered a i7 12700k. Don’t need the extra cores and it looks like it will be noticeably faster.
This video just spoonfed me the information I was wondering about the compatibility issues of the upcoming mobos 'cus as soon as there's new cpu in town, mobos are always the first & big concern. Thanks a lot man.. really appreciate all your videos!
Glad I could help!
Thank goodness. I've been looking for someone I'm subscribed to to talk about these boards and help me sort out which board I may want to buy.
Thanks Jason.
This was fun! And a lot of work :)
Hi Funkadelic! Glad this was helpful for your future upgrade (:
Thanks so much for the info! This was really helpful. I've always been a PC gamer, but have had friends help out (or they do it entirely) with my builds in the past. I'm taking a shot at picking my own parts, so this has been great to identify what features are desirable/necessary vs. what am I overspending on.
Glad I could help. Remember getting a GPU right now is challenging due to the shortage, so grab that first.
Just found your channel and I appreciate the info! Love how you keep the engagement going in the comments
Welcome to the channel! I try to respond to everyone within a couple days if I can!
Congrats on the new build!!!
Your conent is just what I like to see. Great job - hope you reach the 80k Subscriber mark very soon! You deserve Millions of Subs
Thanks! We hit 80K subs this morning!! Not sure if it shows on the public page yet (always a lag between RUclips studio and public stats).
@@PCBuilderChannel You deserve it and congrats :)
I'm a sucker for high end asus strix motherboards like these
Great video! I did not find a comparison of z690 motherboards in my native language. I started Googling and I'm very glad that I got your video.
I bought Gigabyte Gaming X based on your recommendations and am now waiting for delivery.
Thanks!
Glad I could help! Good luck on the build!
I chose the z690 UD ddr5 version to go with my 12900k. Hopefully everything will go smooth.
So glad we could help! And thanks for letting us know.
HYPE!
The Preorder bundle I'm getting:
Asus TUF GAMING Z690-PLUS WIFI D4, ATX
Intel Core i7-12700K, LGA1700, 3.60 GHz, 25MB, Boxed
Kingston 32GB (2 x 16GB) FURY Renegade, DDR4 3600MHz, CL16, 1.35V
Pretty good upgrade considering I have been using i5-4690k for 7 years ^^
No worries, it will come to some other use! I will try as best as possible use parts as long as their life span can hold!
Please put the price for each item
I’ve watched through this video alone several times lol.
i just got the Z690-p ;-;
Hello, my brother is planning on building a gaming pc and I am planning on building one too. He gave me a list of parts that he planned on using and I was wondering if this is a good build because I plan building something similar or maybe better. This is my first time building a pc and I'm kind of paranoid as to what to get or what's good.
Here's the list:
• Cooler: NZXT kraken z73
• Ram: 32gb vengeance RGB pro sl (white)
• SSD: Seagate 4tb barracuda
• Motherboard: Asus TUF x570 plus wifi
• Power: corsair 850w
• Case: lian li mid tower dynamic
• Cpu: Ryzen 7 5800x
• Graphics card: not sure what to get
• Fans: lian li 120 (x9)
• Cables: lian li strimmer cables
Thank you! I am hoping you could help because your videos seem very informative and you helped a lot of people! Thanks again.
Thanks recently I want to update my rig Wich right know I have sandy bridge, did you recommend DDR5 to future
Out of all of the Alder Lake CPUs I'm kinda leaning towards 12700k, but I do wanna wait for AMDs offerings.
Should go ddr5
@@mikerzisu9508 For gaming? If you already have fast DDR4 the gains are virtually non existent. Couple of games that you might notice if everything else in your system is optimal. Same still applies with 13th gen although the 13900k is probably better with DDR5. (gaming, I'm not talking about any other activities)
Love the video!
I jumped the gun and pre ordered an i7-12700k. Not sure if i should go DDR5 or DDR4. If DDR5 is twice as expensive i might as well buy twice the amount of DDR4 memory right? What would you recommend?
Its not clear to me yet which is best. Right now from a price to performance standpoint I think ddr4, but we will have a better sense soon.
So... where do you place the MSI TOMAHAWK on the tier?
Thanks for the awesome video.
Yes, we'll see how it goes! I'm having a hard time getting DDR5 memory kits so I can't imagine for a regular consumer.
Nice video! Do you have to use the water cooling for VRAMS on the ASUS Z690 Formula or is it optional? I want to get it to complete my white build.
This was a great video, thanks for catching me up to speed so efficiently
Looking to get the “MSI MPG Z690 EDGE WIFI DDR4 ATX LGA1700 Motherboard” what do you think of that one? do you think it’s worth it to upgrade to DDR5?
considering getting an i9-12900k before the christmas pump (probably too late but the performance is worth it). As always, great info
i remember Z490 had the same issue with SFX boards where you either had terrible ones to avoid, or really good ones that were too expensive, without any middle ground.
i was trying to make a MATX build for my dad around that time. ended up going AMD instead with a nice B550M Mortar board that just hit that sweetspot on price and features.
I also have this questio
@@Bronkeykong I ended up with the tomahawk as it was discounted. Works fine, looks good (not as RGB blingy as the edge)easy to install.
I subscribed since I'm in the market for a new motherboard/CPU. I have an MSI B360 Gaming Plus with an i3-8350k so it's about that time.. Looking forward to an update to this video, thank you for this really informative video.
Welcome to the channel! Thank you for watching
Actually purchased and waiting for delivery: ASUS Z690 STRIX-A. I'm skipping DDR5 until the cost vs performance makes more sense.
Would you still recommend avoiding an entry level Z690 even if it’s the same price as a high end B660? Thanks!
Should I return my MSI pro ddr4 I bought from Best Buy? The better audio on the Gaming X makes me want that more.
Im really stuck on which motherboard to get for my i7 12700k, any thoughts? Mainly just for gaming
Good job Jason. Keep it up!
Thank you!!!
Hi Jason, 1st time builder here. What do you think is a fairly priced Z690 mobo for i5 12600k. I plan to only use DDR4. I'd like a good audio & enough room for future OC. Thanks!
I still like the gigabyte gaming x, the aorus elite, or the msi tomahawk linked
@@PCBuilderChannel Thank you so much!!
Sounds interesting, but that's more a Jays Two Cents kind of thing as I don't do extreme overclocking generally.
With one i choose please the GIGABYTE Z690 GAMING X DDR4 or the ASUS TUF GAMING Z690-PLUS D4
or choose for me the best mob under $250 for gaming and game developing . Thank you a lot for wonderful contain
Both good. Just make sure to update the bios to the latest version.
I just bought the aorus elite ddr4 super excited for this upgrade only paid 230 on sale
Really informative video mate, well done!
Glad it was helpful! Thanks for watching
Thank you so much for this advice! I went with the gigabyte gaming x z690. Really excited!
Im going for an i5-12600k, mostly gaming.
Glad we could help!
Awesome! Check out the i5-12600k build we just did on the channel today!
Whats your thoughts on MSI PRO Z690-A ? I like that its cheaper board that supports ddr5 do you think its good in combo with 12600k?
I go through that one in the video, I recommend it if you don't need the high end onboard audio (if so, I like the Gigabyte Gaming X but it has had some bugs, mostly which have now been worked out). Good budget offering from MSI.
@@PCBuilderChannel Yes thank you for the reply I dont really need the audio I dont use headphones. Only stereo with 3mm jack so I think the msi is the better option for me.
What do you think about Evga Classified?
I bought an 11700k with a z590 ultra but I haven’t opened them. I was looking at the aero g gigabyte ddr4 and the 12700k but idk if the vrm will handle the turbo boost at higher sustained level. Would you recommend that setup together? Is it even worth it to upgrade from that?
I do video editing, photo editing, gaming, and mild over clocking. I just haven’t built a computer in like 9 years and a lot has changed haha.
Heard that.
Trying to configure a gaming build for this Fall, are there any known major issues with the Asus Prime Z690-P or Z690-A from owners out there?
I looked at all of them. I chose the MSI z690 edge wifi. Great board, really heavey duty pcb and the best rgb
Hi sir I’m new I’m this world of the pc gamer but I’m have a important question should I wait for the new generation or I’m build pc now
There is always something new on the horizon. My advice is, if you need a PC now, no reason to wait for the "perfect" moment.
hey i know im pretty late but do you think GIGABYTE Z690 GAMING X DDR5 MOTHERBOARD would work well with 17-13700k and 4080 with 32 GB 6000mhz ram? building my first gaming rig and i dont wanna get dissapointed because its being bottleneck'ed or something
I'm looking for a mb right now, whats a good MSI micro atx mb for 12 gen?

I have a question about the Aorus Waterforce 280 X. On PcPartPicker it says that this AIO doesn't support LGA 1700, so I'm a bit confused since you said it is.
Thanks for the super complete review!
Would you suggest buying an ASUS ROG STRIX Z690-F GAMING WI-FI DDR5 for an i9 12900K?
Right now in my country it's the cheapest board, and it supports previous cooler solutions...
It’s a good board, I’d get the ddr4 version
would the GIGABYTE Z690 GAMING X DDR4 be good enough and supply enough power to the i7 13700kf ?
Would the Gaming X handle a 12900k?, or is it best to step up a tier?
I’m guessing that getting a z690 and an 12600k would be more expensive or around the same price as a 5800x with a b550.
I'm ordered the Steel Legend Z690 from Asrock, great features, sub 250$ and fits my overal build theme for my white PC case.
Hey if you happened to get the board and build already. How's the board? Never bought an asrock so don't know much about them
I'm standing in line right now before doors open for a 12700k and motherboard. I was aiming for an MSI Pro Z690-A, but now after watching this I'll try to get the Gigabyte Gaming X instead. Thanks for the video, really helpful! I've been standing out in the cold for two hours, one more to go :)
Stay warm! Good luck on the build!!!
@@PCBuilderChannel Thanks! When I got in the store, there were only TWO motherboards total on shelves. And I managed to get one of them! 12700k and MSI Pro Z690-A Wifi secured :)
@@ishJJx3 Hi, how's the mobo now?
Loved the information. I've just bought the Gigabyte z690 gaming X because of your video to pair with my I5 12600k. Thank you for all the usefull information.
Happy to help!
i want the i5 12600k, but the z690 is expensive for me and don't plan to do overclocking, instead i thought that it would be great to buy a b660, specifically GIGABYTE B660 Gaming X AX DDR4, it will have problems in the performance if it's not a z690?, do you have a better option? please let me know
Bought a maximus hero z690 + 12900k + corsair dominator 5200mhz 32gb. Beastly pc to go with my 3090 strix.
Will the Gigabyte Gaming X be any good for i7 and a overclock?
The difference a year makes. I bought the TUF Gaming z690-plus wifi ddr5 today for $118 at microcenter. It was an open box though.
Have you been happy with this board?? Heard mixed reviews but just purchased it for my wife's build because I found an awesome price( not as good as yours😂). The cpu I got is i5-12600kf matched with a 6700xt gpu.
Hello, on my new build I have an Intel Core i9 12900K, EVGA 3080 Ti FTW3 Gaming Ultra vid card, a LG C1 55" OLED, and an
EVGA - GP Series SuperNOVA 1000W ATX 80 Plus Gold Fully Modular Power Supply. What DDR5 motherboards do you suggest that will allow me to do 4K gaming with the possibility of 120 Hz? I also do video editing, but it is the 4K gaming fps I am Most focused on, the other factors should all be covered enough.
The Asus prime listed in the description is good
So I'm debating on which motherboard to buy in hopes to be future proof (or as best as I can be...)
I'm getting the i9 12900k(s) cpu and have the Lian Li Dynamic Evo case. Looking to support DDR5, spend no more then $800
Any recommendations?
I'm was considering the ASUS-ROG-Z69 Carbon...
Check out the gigabyte gaming x!
Have you looked at the ASUS Prime Z690-P WiFi D4 (DDR4 version)?
Thank you very much for your reply. Yes, I did. I would like at the very least 2 pcie version 4 x 16 slots electrically. One 16 lane electrically for a GPU and 2nd x16 slot for an ASUS 4x M.2 adapter card. Unfortunately, all z690 boards drop down to 8x8 lanes electrically when you fill in the first two slots. This is due to resource sharing issues of the chipset, because the 12th gen cpus only having 16 bus lanes. I think I will need to build a threadripper to get enough pcie lanes. Again, thank you for your time.
So what do you think about that MSI MAG Z690 Tomahawk WIFI DDR4 is out now?
Fun fact, I have a water cooler from the suck at 2011 era a heatkiller v3 End it fully fits on socket 1700
Thanks for such an informative introduction. I bought Asus Rog Strix z690g gaming Wifi. There is a good deal in my place. We got a free Asus ROG RYUJIN II 240 by buying Asus Rog Strix Z690g motherboard. That is a nice steal. :D
Nice!
SOLD! I'm getting me a Gigabyte Z690 GAMING X. But question: if the Asus Tuf Gaming was the same price as the Gigabyte which would you choose?
Great and valuable information. Definitely thumbs up. I have learnt quite a lot. I am new to pc building and you have helped me to understand motherboards for this generation.
Thank you for the great feedback! It means a lot to us. Glad we could help!
Hope that helps.
can you do a updated version please and thanks
Jason, any advice would be greatly appreciated!! thanks
Its got a good but weaker audio codec and really no other additional features over the Gaming X.
@@PCBuilderChannel Thanks !
Would you recommend the Z690 Gaming X for i7 12700k? I am hoping to overclock the P cores to 5.0ghz and no overclock for the E cores.
For overclocking, no one has done VRM testing on anything yet. So right now I would be conservative and get the Aorus Pro
Reach out to Lian Li customer support for a LGA1700 bracket for it, they'll get you one. Might have to pay a small amount.
@@PCBuilderChannel thanks for getting back to me. Appreciate the advice 😊👍
Gone for the Gigabyte z690 Gaming X and ddr4 4600. :)
@@MrMspidyM how is it?
@@Geek-jx3gw yeah its really good. Had 1 small issue as it wouldnt detect nvme ssd. Ended up updating bios to version F4 which was straight forward. Been fine since. Went for DDR4 4600 which is plenty fast 👍
I’m building my first gaming pc. I have a Asus Tuf rtx 3070ti and just ordered an intel 12700k. I need to choose an ATX mobo.(ddr4) Any suggestions? I’d like to spend no more than $300. Is it beneficial to get an Asus board to match the Asus gpu?
Check out the Aorus and the Tomahawk. You don't have to match Asus to Asus.
Do you have any best reccomendation of air coolers for 12600k,12700k and 12900k with ddr4 motherboards?
Stay tuned for this weekends video! Saturday 11 am est
I'm planning on buying an i7 12700kf with a rtx 3080 graphics card for gaming... I need to figure out with motherboard I should go for
The gigabyte gaming x is sold out currently, not available for another 2-3 weeks. Would you recommend the asus prime z690-p as an alternative?
Tomahawk has way better features, but only you can decide if its worth the extra money.
Get the msi z690 wifi edge. Its come down to 340. Best rgb too
I just picked up evga's rtx 3090ti yesterday.
