  • Last Year the lovely R.J. Hampson released his books in hardback versions alongside his popular paperback / softback versions... and since then I've been tempted to get one to try and see the difference in the paper. In November, a lovely subscriber reached out to me and asked if she could send me the book so I could make a comparison video and accurately measure the paper... so here we go!
    A big thank you Russell for trying to get us colourists better paper to use for his cute artwork!

    Had to watch, even though I already have a lot of both types, 😉 Agree it's sad it's not much better, if the whole book was like the outer cover sheets it would have been amazing! I do overall prefer the hardback versions, I have used my watercolour pencils on it and the surface is much stronger for those, and feels more stable. It allows me to use a bit more products without having to worry as much. I prefer the feel of the surface for my pencils as well, but as you say it's personal choice. My favourite books I will buy hardback, but not all of them. I just wish Maria Trolle's publisher would snap him up, imagine a full Hampson book like Marias books !😍😍 If only!

    I love a hardback coloring book because i love coloring in a chair and not at a desk. They are hard to come by though.

    Lily, you should check out Colouring Chemist - she did a thorough comparison of RJ books from about 4/5 countries! 😃

      Yes I saw that video, sadly she never had paper gauge though so the paper thickness was just based on the old "flap it and feel" technique 😆

    If you release a hardback version, I would expect at least paper of the kind you find in the Hanna Karlzon and Maria Trolle books.

      Yeah, that's my theory too. Not just a self-published hardback. The self-publishing it's really designed for story books rather than colouring books.

    £13.99 seems a lot for that when the new Hanna Karlzon is £12.99. But thanks for all your science 😊

    Hi Lily, thanks for this, now I know I'll definitely not be buying any of the hardback books, I don't even own the paperback versions coz Amazon paper, I just can't lol The images are brilliant, like you say, shame RJ only has the Amazon option open to him. The PDF's don't seem very good value IMO, £4 for 6 (plus the night version) images. I've been thinking about just buying the paperbacks and copying them onto good paper but that takes effort 😂🥰

      @ArtJourneyUK  5 месяцев назад +1

      £4 for 6 images? That does seem expensive. Does he do his whole books as PDFs?

      I don't think so, all I can see is the packs of 6 images from different books x@@ArtJourneyUK

    OMG, I didn't know he has hardback books with a single set of pages!! 😮 I like his style but I refuse to buy books with double sets of images. Unfortunately the bound books are rather expensive here 😭 They seem to be imported from the US or UK and are between 20 - 25€. A Hanna Karlzon is about 17€.

    Thank you for the video, I feel better about my decision to skip his books due to paper and cost. In 🇨🇦 his hardback are over $37.00 so not worth a book with so few illustrations and not on quality paper. I would buy his books in pdf and print on my own paper.

    • @ArtJourneyUK
      @ArtJourneyUK  5 месяцев назад

      Yeah, I'd be more likely to do that too.

    Do you happen to have a few other popular books handy to caliper real quick? Curious about the actual thickness of Bassford, Rosanes, Karlson, etc.
    I greatly appreciate the effort he showed to try to fix the problem but I think something was missed in the translation lol.. we said "better paper"... the publisher told him "this is better paper".. but nobody asked US what "better paper" IS. We need tooth, and we need something that can hold up to mixed media. They gave us better PRINTING paper, not better ART paper.
    I was originally frustrated due to the double pages.. I hate double pages, I have no desire to color the same thing multiple times.. so I wind up with half the book blank which irritates me almost as much as coloring the same page again. All it does is add to the page count with no extra work for the artist... and his books are already quite expensive compared to others in the same category. Here in the US they are currently $11 for the paperbacks and $17 for the hardcovers. I wound up buying a couple of the earlier books anyway because his illustrations are so great. I really do love his art and enjoy coloring it.. enough detail to be fun while still simple enough to be easy.. and lots of humor/quirkiness. THEN he started adding a TINY difference to the extra pages for the new books which struck me as "whatever", it's not enough to really make a difference.. it's just a flip, copy/paste, or black background. Sure the black backgrounds are fun but I could do that with a marker and ten minutes, KWIM? THEN he came out with the new paper and a single set of pages...and at first I was thrilled, until I realized they are hardcover.. hate coloring in hardcover books, I spiral bind all of mine so they lay flat and can be flipped over so I don't have half the book hanging over my lap. I own ONE hardcover and it's a Karlson which has amazing paper I can straight up paint in.... so I could get over that if it was great art quality paper.. but no... they are not thick enough to handle any water at all without serious buckling, or even some waterbased marker without shadowing... so the whole thing was a big "pfft". Figured, oh well.. I'll just stick to the paperbacks. THEN he decided to republish his older books with the adjusted second pages! Now I'm over here holding a book I spent good money on that is inferior, and if I want the new version I have to pay for it all over again. The whole situation is just on my last nerve at this point lol. Meanwhile I'm over here ignoring the books of his I have.. because they irk me... and happily coloring my Angelkova books which are on the same Amazon paper but give me fifty unique pictures for half the price of his. I have given serious thought to pulling the duplicate pages (I can do that easily since they are spiral bound) and either leaving them at the measly 25 pages we actually get, or combining them into a nice thick single book.. but gah.. spending that much on so few pages on Amazon paper is hard to swallow. Really though that is all we are getting from him regardless.

      All great points, that I agree with. The problem with Amazon KDP Self Publishing is that it's not for colouring or art books, it's for story books. So the paper is only going to be OK or slightly better printing paper. Whereas Johanna Basford, Hannah Karlzon etc use paper selected for colouring on.
      I also agree with not liking double images, I'd rather have 25 images and pay £5 than double for £8.50! I'm very unlikely to colour the same image twice. I like your idea of taking the books apart and binding two 25 page book from them!
      Oh yes, I will paper test Basford, Karlzon etc. Good idea for a video!

    Hi. You were wondering what these books from different countries would be. Check out Colouring Chemist, she is a Canadian you tuber who did a video comparing 5 Amazon printed coloring books from 5 different countries. All 5 are the RJ Hampson books Lost and Found.

    • @ArtJourneyUK

      Hi Louise, yes I saw that video, she compared 5 of the softback books (with the good 'ol wobbly-paper-test 😆). What I was wondering is; if the hardback books RJ has published are different. For example, I guess the American one is printed in the US and not shipped all the way from Milton Keynes, UK. So the US Hardback could be different to the one I've tested.
