Terriers was a private investigator thriller from the writer of Ocean's 11, and I would consider it the most underrated show of all time. It ran for 13 episodes on FX, premiering on September 8, 2010 and airing its finale on December 1, 2010. Starring Donal Logue as Hank Dolworth, Michael Raymond-James as Britt Pollack, Laura Allen as Katie Nichols, Kimberly Quinn as Gretchen Dolworth, Rockmond Dunbar as Mark Gustafson, Loren Dean as Jason Adler, Karina Logue as Stephanie Dolworth, Alison Elliott as Laura Ross, Michael Gaston as Ben Zeitlin, Daren Scott as Mr. Burke, and Christopher Cousins as Robert Lindus. I actually grew up in Ocean Beach (yeah it's actually a real place in San Diego, California. Despite the fake sounding name) And as a native, I can attest that, the way they portray Ocean Beach and the people within it, is dead accurate. Including some of the seemingly absurd aspects. It's actually pretty cool seeing a show with my hometown as a setting.
Former mission beach resident here. Yeah when I first was watching this is was like dude OB is a real place in San Diego, and I was living in Mission when this series was on so I most definitely tuned in. I can tell you that they nearly constantly referenced OB in the show through dialogue as well as SD as a whole. Surprised he didn’t pick up on that.
I'm from Chula. I think the big bads plan to turn OB into an airport is outrageous and hilarious. like we've already got an airport and its not that crowded.
'Ocean Beach' is hilarious. Way to mail it in, Naming Committee. That's like naming something Freshwater Lake, or Urban City, or Tree Forest.
If you haven't seen Justified, it's well worth a binge watch ... one of my favorites. I watched the whole season of Terriers when it was released and thought it was great. I couldn't figure why it was canceled.
Agreed, Terriers and Justified (ended by creators choice, spin-off City Primevil announced) were great, but I'd further recommend Hap and Leonard, Brassic, Get Shorty, the Wrong Mans and Leverage (with it's sequel Redemption surpassing even the fab original).;o)
Oooooh, nice. This show was painfully underrated. It's like the Network wanted it to die. Now to get cozy and watch this.

Justified is one of my favorite show, it has stranded test of time.

I was on a PI kick and found this show, without the typical 'gimmick' to be quite refreshing. This show also introduced me to Donal Logue who is one of my favorite actors. VERY under appreciated show, similar to the show LIFE which also had Donal Logue in a supporting role.
Love this show. Very underrated and shame it lasted only one season.
Same with Rubicon which I would love to see a video on!
Never heard of this one but looks like it's worth a watch if you say so. I love how you never miss a chance to take a dig at the Miami PD from Dexter lol fantastic.

Would you be interested in doing a retrospective of Person of Interest? It's a network show and can be hard to get into in S1 but it's increasingly good and one of the best shows in my opinion.
Recently watched that show. The episodic stuff was often mediocre but it got so damn good when it focused on the main plot and storyline. I could imagine if it wasn’t limited by CBS it could be an amazing show. Also if it had more time to end cause the final season was a little underwhelming after every season before it significantly improved imo.
@@EddyTheMartian Agreed. The last season was a bit rushed. They somehow still built in procedual stuff. I could only imagine it's the network forcing them to do so. The 'case-of-the-week' episodes are definitely simple. But what I liked was a lot of them eventually connect together to the main storyline and many of the case characters actually come back.
I was so hooked into Terriers, and when it faded from view, I truly felt there was no hope for humanity

Terriers was a really good show, much better than I thought it was going to be. Hank is my favorite character.
They constantly do illegal shit, infront of law enforcers
Aswell as mistreat searching crime scenes, not to mention their stupid ass decision making not making sense most of the time.
It's such a shame mid ass writing like this gets called underrated or amazing, especially when shows like Buffy and Breaking Bad and Arcane exist.

I put Terriers just above "Kings" "The Black Donnelly's" and "Firefly" for best single season show ever...

The best depiction of adult male friendship ever conceived on TV (or film). Nailed it.
Rake was another good show with excellent writing that got canceled.
No comments about Hank's sister (other than noting someone is hiding in the attic)? Such an interesting character, and fun that she was played by Donal Logue's real life sister.

I watched this show based on your recommendation. I really liked this show. I wish there was more.
Watched and loved every episode of this doomed show….seriously-after enjoying the pilot, my wife turned to me and said, “Dead Show Walking..”…Knew it didn’t stand a chance but was glad that it at least got its full story arc completed….Didnt grow up in San Diego but I’ve been here since ‘91 and this captured the feel of this weird place perfectly (as did the slightly more successful and less doomed Veronica Mars, also filmed here)
You gotta talk about Dexter New Blood, when that series finishes up.

Haven't seen Sons, but Justified is worthy of every second of praise it ever recieved.
Sons of Anarchy is grossly overrated. Justified is quite good ... though never Terriers good.

I've been thinking about doing one on Fargo! I was waiting to see if they're planning on making any more seasons so I can cover it all in one go, but I might want to just do videos from season-to-season.

"Out of Gas" was by far the best episode of Firefly. Terriers flashback episode was also brilliant, despite the review here. Just brilliant.
I loved Terriers. But, as hard as i try, I can't get anyone to watch. Those who do, hate it immediately. And we live in San Diego, where the real Ocean Beach is. OB isn't a city though, and doesn't have a police force. But its clearly filmed in and around Ocean Beach. Good show. Fox blew it when marketing. The dog in the ads didn't really give a clear idea of what the show was about.

I remember the show and tell all my friends to watch. Sins of the Past is my favorite episode of teh series.
I really enjoyed this show and was bummed it was cancelled.
There was a woman who lived in a guys cupboard in Japan. He noticed food missing and set up a camera I think both the origin of Terriers as well as Parasite.
Love your retrospectives, but totally disagree with your take on the affair. I loved the plot point because it was so much more realistic about how these things happen and how people deal with them. I took Katie's actions as being intentional. She didn't just over-drink and then get victimized, she purposefully drank to the point that she new knew her inhibitions would be down. She self-sabotaged, as so many do, because she didn't feel worthy of her relationship. This doesn't excuse the actions of the sleaze ball professor, not by a long shot, but it explains why Katie feels guilt. Because as she said, she knew what she was doing. She's not perfect as she appears, she's just as broken as Britt and Hank... Well, no one is as broken as Hank. Speaking of... Hank, still devastated by his failed marriage, saw Britt and Katie's seemingly perfect relationship as a beacon of hope that that kind of pure love could exist. That's why he didn't tell Britt, and convinced Katie to lie, he needed their relationship to succeed. In his dismal existence he needed to believe that happiness was possible, for his own sake.
this is the second show Neal McDonough played a guy who was into cheese pizza. his character was into that shit on justified
Much as I enjoyed Terriers, I still lean towards either "Life" or "Keen Eddie" being the best under-the-radar/nobody-has-heard-of-it show.

What's interesting is that you don't seem to know about the fact that everybody involved with the show blames its failure on the marketing which had to do with dogs.
Also they always had it planned that his sister was hiding in his house because the very first conversation in the first episode of the milk is about his sister.
As much as you seem to like this show you really fundamentally misunderstood what they were going for. The point was to be realistic. And also... It was 2010. But your whole problem with the Katie and the professor storyline... You have to remember this show is a decade old.
I remeber seeing this in passing one day, but never remembered what it was until I couldnt find it anymore.
But it made an impression., specially the drinking coffee with whiskey in the morning scene. Maybe because the Monk-Mentalist-know it all detective style was getting too old for me at the time

He jumps into the air way before the car arrives, lands butt first on the windshield, rolls gently off the side instead of the hood, and somehow without even hitting the roof manages to dent the entire front of the car (?) At least it wasn't computer animated...

I loved this show, I think the bad name has something to do with it being canceled. Slip Maker is a pretty bad name too tbh, but just like the show, great content!

I watched Terriers when it was airing, and was totally gutted when I found out it wasn't going past the first season. Absolutely loved the show. I also totally understood why it didn't go past its first season. It suffered from a bad elevator pitch. I always had a hard time selling it to friends based on the premise alone, and often had to say "Trust me. Check it out."
A show I've never seen? I'm a gamer, that's easy to find.

This series I still think about in a "I wish they made more" way. Another one is with that guy that plays Major Winters in band of brothers: "Life" which was awesome and actually had hit its storyline was finished.
In "Life"s case I think often about how many missed that show and I still try to find it on a streaming platform but nothing so far here in Sweden.
Heavily serialized shows generally lose their audience a lot faster. So some network prefer that their first half of season is more focused on procedural stories.
Relatable dirtbags v the big corporate land grabbers was the perfect '08 show. I lked it so much. Gone too soon.

HBO mini series are my favs. Generation Kill is my fav of them all even over the Pacific and Band of Brothers. There's heaps of them, all have merit. The Outsider, Show me a Hero, The night of. Then there's series like Big Love and Carnival. The Brink. The leftovers. In treatment.
Cartoons like the Critic (from peak Simpsons), Axe Cop.
Law and Order is big but Law and Order LA is really damn good but only 1 season. Also the watch order is weird and make sure you find the correct watch order otherwise something big happens but then doesn't.

Can't believe you missed the point of the ending. It was absolutely supposed to be a "deus ex machina" revelation. It was almost, dare I say ... perfect. And, of course, it wasn't a real "cliff hanger." The ending was exactly on point. Perfectly.
I don't remember much but it does seem kinda conveniant for solving their problems

Great recap. Oddly, escaping a Mexican prison is not a crime. The person escaping is seeking liberty, and the desire for freedom is implicit in every person. Unless Britt committed another crime while escaping, he'd be all good. Cheers
It was so "good" it was cancelled after its first season. I couldn't get passed the second episode. Gawd awful stuff. The gimmick is "they're PI's but... they're losers!"
Michael Raymond-James is my favorite actor of all time! (My Profile Picture is even from Terriers). Terriers is an incredible show!

Great show until Lindus's death, the way they killed the character made no sense, ruined the show for me tbh.

It was the best show in years!! We still listen to the theme show song! Broke our hearts when it was cancelled! It was to smart for those in charge!
