The plant you don’t know what it is, is called yellow dock. It is a weed ( wild plant) yet I use it in cocking the same as spinach or all other greens. I use it in soups too. Sorrel ( is another on that looks like yellow dock) but sorrel has a sauer taste. You can use sorrel the same in salads, or soup. Happy to find you. Congratulations on your beautiful garden. I to live in Sacramento CA. Enjoy your garden.
I live in Rancho Cordova & grew Brussels sprouts for the first time last spring. I started them too late, but kept them alive all summer & looked forward to a winter harvest. the stalks stayed skinny all year, but produced sprouts. (a few opened up, but not most) Sadly, some critter (rat or squirrel) ate all of the sprouts and leaves over a weekend. argh! next year I'll put hardware cloth cages around them.
Hey There! So I’m in Zone 9b too but in the IE… So I just planted 2 avocado trees late fall and I did a TON of research about them. #1 You have to have the right avocado trees for where you live. #2 Some avocado trees need another variation to cross pollinate with (which is why i planted two.) #3 They take a lot of patience. For the size I bought they told me not to expect avocados for probably another 2 years. So you might need to plant a second one (or convince a neighbor to 😉) or it’s just not the right time yet. Nature is so much fun to try to understand! LOL
Right! Our tree is a Mexicola. I know they take a few years to produce anything and we’re coming up on year three so I’m hopeful! I hadn’t heard anything about pollination so I’ll have to research that, thanks for the tip!!
So excited to see someone else growing in NorCal. This is my first year attempting a garden but with our warm winters I'm making myself confused with when to plant seeds, what can I get away with planting now vs really should wait for fall (brassicas).
Awesome you found us! We definitely recommend following a planting guide from some local resources and depending on your garden zone. We wrote this garden blog to help people out with finding resources for beginners. Hope it helps! www.ourlibertyhouse.com/backyard-gardening/best-resources-for-beginner-vegetable-gardeners
Being it’s your first year I would wait! We typically plant our Spring veggies in late Feb/early March as the soil temps right now are still too low. You might be able to get away with some cool season crops now, but with the danger of night time frost it could be challenging to keep young plants alive 🌱 (all of ours were planted last October). Good luck!!
@Our Liberty House/Garden,Home,DIY I also Violas in garden, maybe you should try growing some variety of Nasturiums,I've the Alaska type of Nasturium(Orange petal flowers)?.
Our Liberty House/ Garden,Home,DIY, the trangula pointy leafy green plant is called ,Arugula(A lettuce variety like the other near it), hope thst clearify things for you,Beth?.
Im in southern cal and even grow tomatoes in the winter...lots of cauliflower and brocolli and just planted another round of cukes in greenhouse doing great
Love your garden and all the varieties you have! You must really like cauliflower 😋. I am so excited about the upcoming spring and looking around at everyone’s garden. Thanks for sharing!!
@Our Liberty House/ Garden,Home,DIY From your video, there's no sign of peppers& I think the type of Cauliflower are in your garden is Snowball variety, but i happen to grow a purple one in my area?. In my garden,my favorite peppers are Mad Hatter,Shishito, Cayenne,Thai Chili& finally Jalapenos.
IDK if you are still planting and harvesting napa cabbages in this new year of 2023 or not but if you drape cheesecloth over the plant the little moth that gobbles cabbages and so on cannot lay eggs that change into the caterpillars that devour our yummy food.
Hey! I am so glad I found you guys! I'm in 9b, too, over in Santa Rosa. Happy to see what you did in your winter garden. I'm going to be working on a fence to keep the dogs out in the next week, then will start working on a spring/summer garden. I am wondering if you have a video or some info about how you've irrigated your raised beds? Thanks so much!
Thanks for joining us! Hi 👋 I’m glad you asked, because I’ve been telling Lucas to do an irrigation video which he hasn’t done yet 😂😂 so maybe this will push him over the edge. We use drip tubing for most of our raised beds which works out really great and it’s on a timer.
@@OurLibertyHouse awesome! Thank you for your reply. I have been using drip irrigation, too, for the last couple years, but my beds have been predominantly in the ground which made it a bit easier. Last summer I experimented a bit with soaker hoses, too, which I liked. This year I want to add more beds and maybe do a combination of drip and soaker. I guess I’m just not really sure how to not be wasteful in between boxes, if that makes sense? Thanks, again, for taking the time to reply.
We wish we could figure it out here. We grew great beets back in South Dakota and my Dad is able to grow them well here in the Sacramento area. Just keep trying
We ended up getting it removed after a few tries. Curious to figure out where the sorrel would’ve come from because we’ve never planted it. Maybe the compost. Who knows
Question, do you start your Cauliflower from seed? If so how many seeds do you put in your starter pot? And last when should you plant the Cauliflower in the ground?
We usually just buy cauliflower starts from a nursery but I would just do 2 seeds per cell and cut it down to one. I plant them in October typically in the ground
Brussel sprouts. I'm in southern California. I planted from seed in October in containers . It's maybe 3" tall. Just leaves. I guess I have not given it enough nutrition, idk. I obviously did something wrong. Should I call it quits on it? 3 inches tall since October! Any advice please
Thankfully, the squirrels don't both our garden much. I think I've made peace with them by putting out a small squirrel feeder with dried corn. It may also help that our dog chases them out of the yard every chance she gets..

Ah thank you for solving the mystery! I may have to try out the weed in some cooking 🌱

That’s so frustrating after caring for them so long. We have always struggled with Brussel Sprouts here. Maybe next year 😅

looking like I am moving to zone 9a in Florida so I subscribed. Need to find out what I will be able to grow.
Welcome and happy to have you! 🌱
Congratulations on the Florida move!

Did you know, you can eat the leaves of broccoli, cabbage, and cauliflower.
Yes! I planned to do that this last year but didn’t get around to it. So maybe next year 😅
Excellent Garden
Thank you!
You can make cauliflower like mashed potatoes. I love it
We do love a riced cauliflower or mashed. Very versatile winter veggie

Yes no luck with beets at all.
We wish we could figure it out here. We grew great beets back in South Dakota and my Dad is able to grow them well here in the Sacramento area. Just keep trying
It looks like sorel I believe. If the leaves are sour then it’s sorel
We ended up getting it removed after a few tries. Curious to figure out where the sorrel would’ve come from because we’ve never planted it. Maybe the compost. Who knows
@@OurLibertyHouse yes never know where the seeds can come from , so true

Sorry for the delayed response. Brussels sprouts are still something we are trying to figure out! Especially in California climates
Where do you get your garlic from? I am zone 9B Florida and garlic just don't grow here for me . Thank you for the info.
This year I ordered from Garlic Gods. But I’ve also purchased organic from the grocery store and had success planting that too
Whats the difference in napa cabbage in taste compared to others cabbages
Napa tastes pretty much like all the other cabbages just grows tighter narrower leaves that are better for certain applications
I am curious how you deal with squirrels? They are everywhere in Sac. Do they do damages to your garden? I know they slow down in the winter.
Thankfully, the squirrels don't both our garden much. I think I've made peace with them by putting out a small squirrel feeder with dried corn. It may also help that our dog chases them out of the yard every chance she gets..
Unknown plant looks like a chinese sword lettuce.
It does look like that. How it got there? No clue haha. It’s gone now
Wait! Do lemon trees have prickles?!
Yes! Big ones
You make that clicking noise with your mouth a lot. Like when you pop the tongue off the roof of your mouth.
It is a dandelion plant
