- I'm back for the second video about gardening on a budget. This is an activity that EVERYONE should be able to do so I'm giving you my top 5 tips.
0:36 Compost
Healthy plants need healthy soil. Compost holds more moisture than dirt, adds microbes, and improves the composition of your soil.
Compost can be expensive, but you don't need to go out and buy bags! This is homemade compost from our kitchen scraps. Organic matter will break down in a matter of months and be ready to use in your yard!
Check out this info from the Solana Center: solanacenter.o...
My compost setup may not be Instagram-worthy, but it was all free, and it does the job. I have three sections at different stages of the process, so I always have some ready and more on the way!
4:44 Saving Seeds
Seeds are so awesome and what got me into gardening! A lot of plants will give you hundreds of seeds so it's way more than you'll ever need for the next season. Share with friends!
Some of the easiest plants to save seeds from are dry-seeded crops (flowers, herbs, greens, etc. as opposed to something like tomatoes). You just need to be patient to give the seed ample time to develop.
7:45 Reuse Crops
Similar to Tip 2, my third tip is to regrow plants that you already have, especially from the grocery store. There are a ton of plants you can do this with, such as many herbs, celery, garlic, green onions, potatoes, sweet potatoes, and so on.
You can trim the plant down and maybe stick it in water. When it's ready, plant it in your garden where it will continue to receive ample moisture.
9:47 Reusing Organic Matter
Let the tea time begin! It might not smell nearly as nice as your echinacea tea, but this stuff is good.
Making your own tea is a great way to give plants a boost. It doesn't often have a ton of nutrients like a fertilizer does, but it's more of a pro-biotic. Depending on how long you soak, you may want to dilute your tea.
12:08 Reuse
I'm all about reducing, reusing, and recycling. Get creative with things! These old window screens are perfect for screening soil and compost!
When possible, I avoid going out and buying more things, especially plastic waste. It might take a little bit of time, research, and relationship building, but this is such a rewarding way to garden.

Recycling/reusing various items… Items such as egg cartons are excellent for starting seeds in. Empty milk containers both plastic as well as cardboard and also plastic margarine dishes all make great “in a pinch” pots if you poke a few holes in the bottoms for water drainage. Empty coffee tins… The list is endless. Keep the awesome vids coming!
I love this content, many times we forget that we can recycle and keep using it in our garden, my most addiction now is learning to save seeds, and yes I still buy some but I would love to just save all my seeds, thank you 😊
"Be patient my grasshopper" made me lol. Hahaha
Also, with repurposing the buckets, when they do crack, use them for planters. My ENTIRE "garden" is in buckets, and storage totes, that otherwise would have gone into landfills!
I have a ton of seeds cilantro and onion , basil, marigold zinnia coreopsis bachelor buttons 😊👩🌾👍🙏🏻 thank you for sharing and tips every video are superb 👍👍♥️👩🌾😊 take care
I hoarder everything relating to garden. I don’t have tree on my property so I make my hubby go collect leaves 🍁 and I compost everything even my junk mail
Check with neighbors or relatives to see if they have unused garden tools, pots, buckets etc that you can have. I did this and used many items for a several growing seasons. It got me started with little to no money and helped me figure out what worked and what didn't. Don't forget to gather those used drink cups from a party for your seed starting! - Rhonda
Yes! Great idea!
Its cool if you could actually find someone who would donate a tool! Those who knew the value of a tool will never ever give it away. There is no way a tool can be useless to someone even if they are currently not using it. There is also nothing more irritating than not being able to find that one tool we stashed away just when we needed it.
I have 3 compost bins and a worm bin, so I'm a compost lover. My plants in my bags love it. I love your tips especially the last one. I'm probably a candidate for Hoarders, Buried Alive because I hate tossing what I can one day repurpose.
Oh no. I battle this all the time. It’s a struggle!
Thanks for your suggestions and reminders of how to save money and the environment. Sometimes we just need reminders. I never thought of the weed tea so I plan to look into it.
Ok what is that beautiful purple vining flowered background?! It’s Stunningggg 😭😭😭
Morning Glory! It soooo pretty. Be careful though, it can really take over so make sure you have the space to let it grow.
Thank you ❤
Thank you for all you are teaching us.💚💚
I love your videos … your enthusiasm and experience is very helpful… Thankyou for sharing 👍🏼🌺
Thanks Brijette 💚
Your shirt is amazing!
We just pile the organic matter all in one spot every year and add leaves in the fall. Planning a bed for ramps.
On Vancouver island people put stuff they don’t want/that is usable out on the curb. I’ve got stacks of food grade buckets with lids, pots etc. my eyes are always open for this when driving around.
Really enjoyed this video. Thank you
Great tips! I compost also!
That shirt!! I need it! So cute!

Love your videos and this is not a hate comment. I do this on a big large scale and I use all sorts of stuff including perennials so why should I not put perennials in my tea?
Were you able to get the drum compositer to work? Mine turns into big lumps.
Please help me with irrigation.
Did you say green onions in your rum?
I’m intrigued.
Ok, so I’ve always shied away from compost because I thought it was a type of fertilizer that could/would burn my plants. Can you do an in-depth expose’ on compost?
Here are a couple vids for now:

Love the video but have a ? I bought some of your seeds from epic gardening. Do your packets have in on when to start and what depth? Most are flowers I've never grown and live in zone 5b. Thanks
Yes, that's correct. We have info on the seed packs and there's A TON of info for each variety on our website too.
I actually like to go to Firehouse Subs when we have the cash and buy their pickle buckets! It's supporting a good cause and reusing at the same time. :)
Ooo we only have a few in San Diego, so I haven't tried that before
Could you reuse seed starting mix that didn't germinate anything? (A cell of seed-starting mix where a seed didn't germinate)
Yes, just make sure it doesn't look like there is any sign of disease
Do you have a video on how to compost???
Have been trying to make compost for Years...never truly turns out that well...buy I don't give up
Ought to be a collaborative Family process...but yeah Family don't see eye to eye to realize my efforts ***as the Son to collaborate Family
Definitely helps to have everyone on the same page! I have this video, but not a really thorough walkthrough

@San Diego Seed Company thanks dear Earth Comrade/Soul Sister
...why does it have to to be like twisting an arm to learn about Compost let alone every one being on the same sane page.. same goes with wanting to unite in creating a green house, and work shop...is like we are not moving forward...now with the exasperated costs of goods...is lame AF
THEN NEXT THING is recycling....
Anyways that topic is a whole pesky bag of worms
This girl is definitely a seed hoarder lol 😆
Shout out to KNF Jadam!
I have worms bins that get all my kitchen scraps and boxes. Worm casting and worm tea. Poop rocks
Brands should learn the concept of content marketing from San Diego Seed Company. Kudos!
