Warhammer: The Old World 500 Point Battle Report - Orcs vs Beastmen Brayherds

- Welcome back to another adventure in tiny battles of Warhammer: The Old World. As before, a member of the gaming group and I were testing the Old World rules using 500 point armies. He was using the hideous Beastmen Brayherds, while I was choosing my army randomly from a collection of seven different list.
This time we got my Green Omen Boyz, again from the Orcs and Goblins Tribes. But this time it's all Orcs (well, one troll) centered on a large unit of Big 'Unz with spears led by an Orc Big Boss.
So will the Orcs succeed where the Night Goblins had failed? Will we do better at counting combat results? The answers are here. As for questions, observations and concerns, those can go below in the comment section.
Awesome game! Looks like Old World is really dramatic at low points. Must get some more games in myself!
I’m not sure why, but, yeah, most games I’ve played have had these big swings in fortune.

They did. The Orcs don’t seem to do anything halfway: Either utter brilliance or complete incompetence, and sometimes both in the same turn.

Great Battle Report. I'll have to add some 500 point games to my Old World game nights.
One minor note (and apologies if you are doing it intentionally), but Arrer Boyz is typically pronounced "error boys." It's a cockney pronunciation of arrow (like some New Englander's put an "er" on words that end in vowels), but I think it's also a tongue in cheek joke because shooting a bow is an erroneous way of fighting--it i'nt dead orcy.
Not Orcy? Someone should tell my Arrer Boyz from my most recent game…
Thanks for the pronunciation tip. It was not intentional, just my Californian cockney. I assumed it was a corruption of archer. Of course, now there are no arrer boyz, just orc mobs, but I don’t think I can change that in my brain.
And, yeah, so far the 500 point games have been fun.

Great report, so glad da ladz did well! And the troll, what an absolute champion! Love them so much.. Almost felt a little tear of pride. Apex should be a warlod! :D
Apex was rewarded with a big open area to stand around in and all the rocks he can eat.
Great game, as always! Love the smaller warbands. Queries, can characters effect troll leadership as elsewhere on the tube say not, does warband increased leadership increase generals leadership for other units in his bubble and is close order cumulative with other close order... I have reading to do! With a game on Saturday.😮 Big uns seem worth it, I have archer one's!
So, I heard the thing about troll leadership as well and I have no idea what they are talking about. Stupidity tests on leadership, units can use the general’s leadership as their own within the command range,… I don’t get where they are coming from and it seems insane to me that the designers would expect trolls to operate on their own leadership. And yes, I believe the new FAQ says warband can increase command range, and yes, close order is cumulative although they did change it so that now unit’s have to be unit strength 5 or more to claim the close order bonus. Good luck on your games.
@dmgashbad4908 I have to read the FAQ and have downloaded it. Regarding the leadership, I thought all characters have a command range based on their leadership except the usual 12" for general and BSB... further for riding a large monster. I'm going to reread the relevant rules! Going to need more than luck lol.

I agree. I think it’s a good sign. I usually avoid games that have too many lopsided wins in the videos I watch.

It comes across that Beastmen do not need any rank units and just use a Gorebeast and a few individual creatures and can destroy everything - seems a bit OP?. I'm glad you won but I'm sure the Orcs are not as tough or hard hitting as they used to be? I'm a bit rusty on WHFB stats but there was a time when Orcs charged people gulped 😂
That was a while ago. I think people used Savage Orc Big ‘Unz on foot in the last edition, but in larger games I struggled to make regular Orc Boyz work. And yeah, they were better, generally. But the game is different so I’ll keep testing things. And as for the Beastmen, I was honestly more impressed by the Gors than the Gorbull and the monsters. I think for their points regular beast infantry could be brutal.
Minimum rank size 6? Am i also 8th ed brain? Cant 26 orcs just be in 5 ranks of 5 with a single caboose orc? Does it only take one model to count as marching column?
It seems to me like it does. It just says more models in files than in ranks, and doesn’t mention the minimum rank size like for the combat result bonus. I could be wrong, but it looks like that’s how it works.

I think you may be right. Long before Mordheim and Warhammer Skirmish and Warbands, there were these microscopic sized Warhammer games.
Warhammer fantasy battles 2nd edition, 1983, it was the only size army that my paper round money could finance.
You outrank me. I started with third edition, but I too played many games with 10 Orcs, 10 Goblins and some Ogres.
You can move after rallying, but can you march?
It seems weird, but as far as I can tell, yes, they can march.
Don't the 2 Razorgors have to be in the same unit in these rules then?
Nope. Razorgor are core units you can take as many times as you like, with a minimum unit size of one.
@@dmgashbad4908 Good luck to you guys playing these new games but from what little i have seen so far it doesn't seem to offer anything that my older rule sets didn't already do, so i'll just watch from the sidelines.
On a more constructive note i'd suggest you guys try using acetate for your new movement trays.
Never thought of a plain old piece of green board for a new base size unit trays.
Guess I'm blind because I didn't see that chaos spawn are in the beasts of chaos list. Was never a fan or choas ogres or trolls but have a few of the models but I really like the dragon ogres.
It’s not exactly just green card. I did cut out 25mm squares on another sheet and glue it on top, although it’s almost impossible to see in the photos.
I always thought it was crazy the Beasts didn’t get Dragon Ogres.
@@dmgashbad4908 Dragon ogres are there, page 101 of Ravening Hordes. I double checked (with my readers this time!) and didn't see Chaos Spawn but I'm glad I picked up some of those hot NSFW dark elf Harpies as well a Cockatrice and Jabberscythe!
