Finally someone doing a proper break in. Many people are scared, they don’t realize that cylinder pressure is actually what helps your rings seat and seal against the cylinder walls. I’m an aircraft mechanic and engine manufacturers specify full manifold pressure for the first 25 hours of break in
@@djpollo2474 ive been an A&P for almost 2 years now and i really enjoy it. If your the type of person to work on cars for fun then youll really like getting paid to work on airplanes
Greg, just want to say you have been my inspiration in the miata world since I got mine back in 2015. Ive literally followed all your videos as reference for everything I have done, from a waterpump change to most recently a full motor tear down and rebuild that's lasted me 13k miles and counting. Thanks for being you man!
So excited to see this dude, I know that stress of a new engine so bad. Good to see your following those break in procedures been trying to get people on that style for a long time. Churr for the videos as always, excited to see some more big power runs from it 😁
Break-in procedure is sooooo important you guys. Had a friend build a motor and put it straight on the dyno, bearings went out after a few days. Teardown had chromium sludge lining the entire crankcase. "At what mileage did you do the first oil change?" - "I didn't change the oil"
I dont understand completely the Flyin miata procedure. Its says at the end that you should change the oil every 50 miles until reaching 1000 miles? Is that correct? or its says change it after doing 50 miles everyday driving when you reach 1000 miles.
Moreover, when do you do the pulls from 2500-5500 rpm? just after the first time you go out with the car, or after you change the oil for the second time. It´s not clear at all for me.
Sooo excited! Miata dad is back and soon hurting some feelings! Hoping my NB can be almost as cool as your soon! Someday maybe she will get some boost or a larger motor if budget allows haha
After scoring myself a 91 last week and driving it around, I totally get it now. And this young man seems to have a great understanding of the 1.6 and 1.8 as well as the rest of the car. 👍 Subbed
Break in is a luxury to me. My race engines get thrown in, make sure it starts, dyno tuning, then in the car. If its lucky it'll get 3 warm-up laps before full boost
When heavy diesel truck engines get rebuilt at a proper shop they usually have a 120v or diesel fired coolant heater to get the engine up to temp before the first start. They immediately hook it up to a heavy trailer and go pull hills. Seating the rings immediately like you did is proper for sure!
I'm super happy for you Greg. I know you've been looking forward to this for a long time. I can't wait to see the tuning video. Keep up the good work man. Keep going. I really appreciate all that you do for us I've been watching you since the beginning and I'll continue to keep watching you until you decide to stop if you even ever do.
Awesome work, I'm looking forward to the dyno day video! Also, I've been following your channel since the 1.6 Turbo engine. I know some people miss the longer tutorial videos, but I like the short form videos you've uploaded including the one with music during the engine assembly.
Damn speedy, chill... lol. Joking aside, I love your videos. It's the inspiration I need to work on mine. congrats and btw, the green car looks like a small FD😍
Love to see the progress your builds have made over the years, especially this spicy red car. Keep up the building and uploads it's coming out amazing!
Can’t wait for the next video of you starting to rip this monster a bit more. And then the dyno vid! And hopefully you can go bruise some feelers after that.
Have you done all your work in your driveway? Much respect, and good to know there is someone out there with even less stuff done in a garage then me. Looking forward to see how this engine goes. You my boy!
The best engine start is at full throttle. A Chilean proverb says, "this is broken or destroyed" (se rompe o se raja). When an engine is poorly assembled or the parts can present problems when they are demanded more. It will break whether power is demanded or not, it all depends on time. But when the engine is assembled properly, storms will pass over it before it breaks.
320 / 5.000 good job, but that gasket will give you cavitation problems, a very prolonged demand with that engine compression that gasket will not be able to transfer heat from the engine block to the cylinder head, causing cavitation. I would have put a high compression metal gasket with at least 3 layers or more.
hellz yeah brotha thats rad and good to see red rippin kinda lol soon fully but glad to see ya happy as well brotha .. looking forward to some WOT pulls but 4 now just happy for you bro ... peace and love craig lol keep it rad stay safe and build on brotha
Super happy for you bud! Excited to see what the refresh brings once you hit the rollers. Any chance you might need to increase your turbo's a/r to account for the increased compression? My guess is you might have a little choke up top depending how far you rev it.
Hey, Greg, now that you got an NA going again... You ever think about doing a wink mod for the headlights? Could be fun, and its a dead simple mod, too! Just two DPDT relays, and a SPDT switch somewhere on the inside!
@@ads1035 Before that get a start-button, a DRl-swap with the indicators, low profiles with LED-bulbs (or RangeRover-LED conversion to the OEM-headlights), get a sickspeed horn resp. 2, a jackson-racing CIA or a proper duct for a maruha radiator with 2 Spals, take care of the gaps between the hood and the popup-lids, restore the hardtop and some of these wheel wells, too. now you may consider a wink mod, not before all of that.
Maan big Red is back again!! But please, is there any spraypainter in the community here who can give Greg's Hardtop and frontleft fender a good respray?? I'd love to do that but I'm over in Europe😅 That engine deserves a nice lookin outfit!
It's been 18 months since I drove my stock 91 NA (we moved house last spring and the poor car was covered in not-yet-unpacked boxes in it's new garage last summer). So now I have to find a new mechanic to trust, and see if he is willing to do the add-ATF-run-it-for-a-while-and-change-the-oil for lifter tick thing. The good news is that no new mice have moved in, and the car smells mostly of cinnamon oil, the peppermint and mothballs have dispersed. That might change when the heater comes on! Perhaps this year, if I'm diligent, I'll get the odometer above 50,000km. Believe me, I'll try.
Piston rings seal with pressure, only thing you need to be aware is getting the pistons up to temp and just send it. We ran our engines in the dyno from new and they where always fine for use. Not eating oil and very good ring seal. Letting the car coast and pulling vacuum is not helping to seat the rings. Best running stock engines making the most power have been dealer showroom test cars that everyone beat the living crap out of. They are run in well and proper with foot on the floor,

Turbo the 1.6 as it just doesn’t have the displacement to run properly with a super. The 1.8’s barely run properly with a super but it’s a little less of an issue on them.
