The exhaust setup on my NA Miata for the last 8-10 years has consisted of a Racing Beat header, Magnaflow hi-flow cat, and Borla exhaust. Very happy with how it performs and sounds. No drone or rasp, fairly deep tone (for a Miata), and the parts will probably outlive the car.
That’s a real solid set up! I was looking at the borla exhaust too, but I couldn’t find anyone who ran racing beat’s new race exhaust so I figured I’d be the guinea pig. A high flow cat should get it just right 👍
Turbos are good at quieting, but "best mufflers"? Have you heard any 3 series lately? Terrible sound. Pretty quiet, though. And the trade off is definitely in the positive(manifold pressure 😁)
Appreciate the video! I was thinking of doing the same exhaust setup when I had a miata. I'm kinda glad I didn't. I hope the high flow cat gets you the sound you want!
I have the racing beat REV8 catback with BHR resonated midpipe and stock header on my RX-8 and full racing beat streetport exhaust on my large streetport 13B SA22C and both cars sound phenomenal with either setup and the best part is they're reasonably quiet when just cruising normally. I'm not really a fan of the noises piston engines make in general, but the racing beat exhaust on this miata definitely make it sound decent
I've thought about buying an exhaust for my 97 too but like you said it's a miata you can't make it sound too great especially without a turbo so I think I'll just wait until I turbo
I’ve got a 94 with the older style RB oval resonated cutback and a Jackson racing header. I’ve tried ever combination of cat and test pipe. The old style RB with an oem cat sounds way quieter than the new one you have. The new system was clearly designed with the oem cat and sounds great imo. The magnaflow bolt on cat and the FM high flow cat are basically the same, the FM has slightly larger inlet/outlet but not enough to matter. They will pump up the volume significantly, at least on the old style RB. I also tried a magnaflow high flow spun cat welded into a test pipe. That sounded the best imo, got rid of the test pipe rasp but kept the crispness. It’s loud though. Also tried a resonator in place of the cat...just sounded muddy and stank. Get a high flow or bolt on cat of some sort. Cleans up the sound and the smell.
On my 93 I have a stock header with a resonated test pipe and racing beat catback and no rasp at all, just a nice deep tone. In the process of a turbo build now and I hope it's not too quiet :).
@@DriveItRyan I believe so, it's the same one as the following link: www.racingbeat.com/Miata-1990-2005/Exhaust-Components/56451.html I replaced an ISR exhaust I had previously with this, the ISR was WAY too loud. I might need to swap it back on though if the turbo quiets down the exhaust too much and let my inner ricer out
Great comparison video it's sad that there is some rasp but ISR doesn't make the best stuff out there. Vibrant Racing makes resonators that you can weld flanges onto to bolt up to the exhaust and thats a good way to have some extra reduction in sound. Honestly tho if the RB Race exhaust is too loud the Power Pulse like I have is the way to go if you want a deeper sound and no rasp. This video is 2 years old so I'm sure you have figured it out but I thought I would share. I am currently on full racing beat exhaust (RB Power Pulse cat back, headers and the RB race test pipe). It sounds amazing with zero rasp.
I got rid of the rasp with a debaffled resonator but am running from the resonator to a coby and to a big bore tip made for turboed mx5s sounds really deep 100% no rasp
I had been looking for a video of this exhaust FOREVER. I could only find the power pulse but I didn't like the look of the muffler with the power pulse system.
Loved the video. I have a ISR exhaust system with their test pipe that I run on my 94 Miata that is a track/HPDE car. I can say with the test pipe the rasp is nuts. I have been wondering if ISRs resonator would help tone it down a bit. Would love to know if anyone is running resonated ISR exhaust.
It should tone it down a bit. I drove the speed academy Miata and I believe they had an ISR resonated exhaust and I have to admit it sounded pretty good!
I found that when I was welding a flex joint between my miata headers and cat, that really reduced raspyness for me! Maybe something to do with resonations and exhaust length
Yeah no. I had a ISR resonated cat delete with the different Racing Beat power pulse and it sounded dead, almost completely silent. Switched it out for the RB test pipe and it actually has a tone now.
@@DriveItRyan ive got a set of the high performance magnaflow cats on my 98 ls1 formula firebird & i think they flow great... in fact, acording to my check engine light, they probally flow "to good" (haha) ...& im thinkin thats what ill probably go with on my 99 miata... thanx!

The optimistic side of me wants to say it’s just the oils from test pipe burning off since this is the first heat cycle it’s seen but I will keep a close eye on it.

Would love to hear how that sounds
I think it sounds cleaner with the cat.
Same! That rasp is nooo fooking good
Turbos make the best mufflers
Preach 🙏

I’ll let ya know how it sounds with the high flow cat! I was very happy with the sound with the stock cat.
Vibrant resonators work great in place of a cat as well to get a smoother deeper sound
This is true! I’ve used the Vibrant Ultra Quiet resonator to replace the cat on my friends Mazda 3 and it sounds great 👍
I've been running isr for a couple of years now on my miata and I love it
I had the irs, perfect at idle. Cruising on the highway was the equivalent of shoving a bunch broken que tips in my arm.
@@alansmilealot yeah it can be a bit loud..lol

Probably better off going straight for it! That way you don’t have to buy/make an exhaust twice.

I’ll take that advice man! Saves me a load of time lol. I’m going to order a magnaflow HFC and throw that in there 😎

Is it the Racing Beat Power Pulse Sport Exhaust with the juicy oval muffler?

Hey guys! How is the drone with this setup? I'm thinking i might like the race muffler for a little more sound over the power pulse muffler
Finally, an exhaust video where the driver doesn't let off as soon as they get to the camera lol
We are not sissies here :P

Not bad but maybe a high flow cat would sound better? Needs framerail reinforcements next to addess that flexy chassis

ISR was annoying as hell for daily driving even with the resonator. I’m running RB power pulse and a test pipe it’s no longer making me deaf.
GREAT video. thank you. i prefer the cat over the test/resonator pipe.
Me too! I think a high flow cat may be the ticket 👍
Right on
Hey guys
Does the race muffler/resonated mid pipe have any drone?
Negligible amount
do the high flow cat
I found that when I was welding a flex joint between my miata headers and cat, that really reduced raspyness for me! Maybe something to do with resonations and exhaust length
Could be! I’m going to keep trying different setups until I get it just right 👌
Good luck and thanks dor sharing the process so far!
Cat sounded better, but yeah.. HFC would be better too...and of course a turbo is the best way to muffle the sound
Couldn’t agree more Bobby!
Yeah no. I had a ISR resonated cat delete with the different Racing Beat power pulse and it sounded dead, almost completely silent. Switched it out for the RB test pipe and it actually has a tone now.
Great video!
Jet's Integral Beat Sound with FM high flow cat on my supercharged 99. I'll admit it sounds a bit loud and VQ-ish🎺 but tolerable.
I don’t mind loud as long as it’s a clean loud if that makes any sense whatsoever 😂
Is this street legal if you run a aftermarket exhaust with a resonator instead of a cat?
We are not lawyers :)
