The Costco hotdog and their rotisserie chickens are known examples of loss leaders. The purpose behind loss leaders is that the retailer (in this case Costco) sells these items at a loss (meaning they make no profit on them) to bring more traffic to their stores so that they make up the money they lost in a lot of other parts of their store

This is actually a business strategy I studied in one of my classes. They LOSE money on their food, but it’s so they don’t exceed certain margins - thereby avoiding specific taxes. At least, that’s what we were taught. It also deviously makes people hungrier when they first enter, because they smell and see it, but it’s positioned at the “end” of your typical shopping trip. Studies have proven that hungry people tend to spend more money than satiated people. So by making you hungry, and thinking about food, you spend more. Then spend very little at the cafeteria because it’s “cheap,” which helps their bottom line. They don’t give a shit about you.

I worked for Costco for a few years. Items are between 3% and 5% markup from the price Costco buys it for, they company makes most of its money on memberships, but the reason why the dogs are $1.50 and have been for ages has to do with a few things. alot of people will stay longer and have a bite to eat since they know that the hot dogs are cheap and many of the prices on the menu don't change. They sell these at a loss just for the reputation of having it stayed at its price for this long. It's also an attraction method, belive it or not some people actually will order food from Costco and pick it up like fast food, and they usually will pick up some items as well. It's all a bisnuess method of keeping its members happy with the cheapest price possible so they don't remember how much a year they are paying. If you use Costco alot it's worth it. But those memberships is where Costco makes 60-75% of its profits.

Probably there’s this comment a few times already but there’s two reasonable speculations that have come out as to why Costco sells the hotdogs, pizzas, or chicken so cheap. 1. They know they’re losing money but it’s more as a “thank you for shopping at Costco” type of thing for the members (although pizzas and hotdogs you don’t need membership) 2. They know they’re losing money but it’s to entice people to shop there. Either way respect to hem for keeping their prices as such

Costco sells hot dogs at a losing profit because this entices more people to actually shop at Costco. Very rarely do people go to Costco just to buy food. They always get the food while shopping at Costco and as you know Costco sells everything by the hulk and are therefore they make a profit by their product and not food.

I sometimes cook hotdogs and hamburguers. The hotdog I cook isn't available anywhere, I cook like my grandma (italian descendent) so she used to cook like Bolognaise sauce: fry garlic and onions, add some salt. Dice the sausages and fry the sausages in the garlic and onion later; add like a Kg of diced tomatoes a tiny amount of water not to burn. Add condiments according to your taste like parsley, oreganon, basil, paprika and cummin (tiny bit). Then to finish chop some green onions...
Get the hotdog bread, you could toast the bun with butter (but I don't do that), open the beauty and put like a lot of this Bolognaise sauce cooked with sausages. To finish it off, add some green onions to the top.
    That is it :)...
My grandmother hotdogs are 10x better than costco :)...
The point of cooking is, you eat 10x better.
Change the sausages by diced meat, diced add potatoes and carrots. Cook for 30 up to 45 min in a pressure pan. You have to add turmenic. Voilá, you have turned your bolognaise sauce into a Russian dish called Gulash, very common in Kazajhstan too. Is ridiculously delicious. Eat your Goulash like a soup with bread, or pasta or rice (anyway you want to). The price, the same like costco hotdogs too... 😊
