Truthfully, there are two things to consider:
    1. Sly is a variant of the "gentleman thief". Gentleman thieves tend to be non-violent when possible, on the grounds that killing is easy -- _thievery_ is hard. Thus, he wouldn't particularly mind giving up extra damage dice.
    2. Sly's cane is a special weapon, created from centuries of experience. Each Cooper of his line has their own variant, making it a unique weapon.
If you like, simply homebrew a _canne de combat_ , a French fighting stick. It's easy enough: Just change a saber from slashing to bludgeoning. They're finesse weapons, so it's a perfect fit.

    • @The_Anthologist
      @The_Anthologist 4 года назад +10

Oooh, now there's an idea I can get behind! I was thinking sickle since some of the Cooper ancestors used short and sharper looking weapons but saber sounds like probably a better idea!

    • @wandererwerewolf477

don't know how are the weapons in DnD but i play pathfinder so i't must be kinda the same on that field... but in my case i would try to homebrew a sickle/scythe as a bludgegoing fnesse weapon, since they have the trip special feature, another option is to homebrew a bludgegoing ankus, it's the nearest thing to sly's cane, aso it has the trip and disarm specal feature, meaby we can use it to "disarm" someone's pocket...or just use crook...reach, trip secial feature

He was terrified of using edged weapons so my DM allowed me to dual wield tonfas (bludgeoning versions of shortswords). The thinking was, spinning them creates a damage multiplier that makes a high strength unnecessary to deal big damage. Keeping them spinning seemed more of a dextrous act, so he allowed them to maintain their finesse ability.

Time for some of Sly's Foes.
    Sly 1
Raleigh the Frog - Grung, strength and constitution based fighter, with a decent amount of intelligence, and a level or two in Artificer. To be fair, all he does is try to squish Sly (perhaps he lacked his gadgets during the fight). Maybe Noble background.
Muggshot - I see a Bugbear here with those big arms. Needs a high strength and dexterity - he's good with guns and gunz. Barbarian/Fighter might fit. Background, Soldier with Criminal features. (Same for Sly 3)
Mz. Ruby - Lizardfolk (or Dragonborn), Necromancer Wizard (lots of voodoo).
Panda King (See idea for Allies).
Clockwerk - Owlin with Armorer Artificer, and Fighter with Defense Fighting Style.
    Sly 2
    Dimitri (See idea for Allies)
Rajan - Strength based tabaxi (would say Leonin, but he does no roaring). Fighter or Barbarian, with some spellcaster (although the one item could just be a Magic item).
The Contessa - There's no spiders, but we might make do with a Thri-kreen based Dhampir. Ranger with the thorn whip cantrip at any rate.
Jean Bison - Minotaur. Fighter/Barbarian. Needs Perception (saw through Sly and the gang's disguises when they tried to pass themselves off as judges).
Neyla - Tabaxi. Hard to describe this cat - she'll steal your tongue and make you eat it, without you knowing.
    Sly 3
Octavio - Leonin. I see him like a Bard/Fighter, with a high constitution.
Black Baron - Custom Lineage (although Warforged would be okay), strength based Unarmed fighter with a certain amount of intelligence. (Secretly, Penelope (see Allies))
General Tsao - Aarakocra - Eldritch Knight fighter, but other martial spellcasters will work. Perception is a good skill - saw through Sly's disguise.
Captain LeFwee - another Aarakocra - Swashbuckling Rogue, at the very least, and a level or two in artificer.
Dr. M. Bugbear, artificer of some sort - other spellcasters can be added.
    Sly 4
El Jefe - Tabaxi, Eldritch Knight with Green-Flame blade, two-weapon fighting style and the Dual Wielder Feat.
Toothpick - Custom Lineage (no armadillo race equivalents that I know of), Rune Knight Fighter with Archery Fighting and Crossbow Expert.
The Grizz - Bugbear with Entertainer background. Rogue or Bard. Must be able to skate and dance and rap.
Black Knight - I'll accept Warforged Fighter (secretly, Penelope controlling a suit of armor).
Miss Decibel - Loxodon bard - uses that trumpet trunk of hers.
Cyrille Le Paradox - Reskinned Tabaxi. Needs Poison Spray and sword-fighting and deception. I'll say Bard-Sorcerer.

I'd have a 15 dexterity, 14 constitution, 13 charisma, 12 intelligence, 10 wisdom, and 8 strength. • @lockwoan01
    @lockwoan01 2 года назад +1

Now that the Giff is a UA race, let's build the rest of the gang, and Carmelita while we're at it -
Carmelita - just like our favorite Ringtail, she's a reskinned Tabaxi. Modify either the Soldier Background, or City Watch (Investigator) or Investigator. Ranger's a good class for this vixen, with the Hunter subclass being a good pick, but we could start with Rogue for extra skills and sneak attacks. Archery is the fighting style for her, but we could grab some Fighter tricks from Battlemaster, and pick up Defense as a fighting style, or Superior Technique. Likewise, depending on how far to go into Battlemaster Fighter versus Hunter Ranger one wants to go, one feat to grab is Martial Adapt to get more Battlemaster techniques. Another good feat would be Sharpshooter - would pick Crossbow expert, but Sharpshooter covers all ranged weapons. We want her to be good enough to capture Sly, or, failing that goal, the guys he does beat up. Dexterity should be highest, followed by Wisdom, Constitution, Intelligence, Charisma, and dump Strength.
Bentley - Tortle obviously. Got to make him something of a hacker. Artificer is a good start, but the kind does depend on the game, but Armorer or Battle Smith are good options, depending on what you want (and thankfully, thanks to Tasha's, we can switch subclasses as need be, at Ability Score Improvement points). Rogue would be a good start as well. Start off with Intelligence on the high end, followed by Dexterity, Wisdom, Charisma, Constitution, and dump Strength, but at least Racial bonuses help there to see to it he has no negative modifiers. See about modifying his crossbows (for sleeping darts as seen in the second game). Intelligence is his main stat. Dexterity is next, if crossbow isn't a magic weapon in the case of the Battle Smith.
Murray - Giff is what we want - but if the DM is "By the Book Official Races Only" (I had that DM), Loxodon comes close, with built-in Natural Armor, based on Constitution, which might prove handy. Strength is the big thing on the big guy - he's the group's muscle. Constitution is next - he's tough. Next up, Dexterity - he can be quick when need be. Next up, Charisma - the big lug is kinda likeable. Wisdom is low, and we'll dump Intelligence - he'll admit he's not the smart one - and make sure he has Land Vehicle proficiency - he's the group's get-away driver, as he can drive a stick-shift. Starting off, depends in race - if Giff, start as a Barbarian to get Unarmored Defense, and then go Fighter to get Unarmed Fighting style, but if Loxodon, start as Fighter to get the Unarmed Fighting style, and then go Barbarian. Murray is a Champion Fighter / Totem Warrior (Bear) Barbarian mix in any case say 16 Fighter, 4 Barbarian - boost Strength and Constitution along the way - we want the big guy to deliver hits, and take them. Of course, as a Champion, the second Fighting Style to get as a Level 10 Champion fighter is Thrown Weapon fighting, and grab Tavern Brawler for proficiency in Improvised weapons - big lug throws a lot of things, including things that normally aren't weapons.

The best way to make Sly work is create a special weapon for him:
The thief's cane: 1d8 bludgeoning damage with the finnese with the special ability to extend your reach whenever you are making a sleight of hands.
Later on you can make stuff like creating special variatiion of the thief's cane:
like one that allows you 3 times at day to make a trip attack with advantage.

    Here's a couple more guys -
The rest of the Cooper Gang. Beware - *Spoilers!*
Panda King - Enemy - turned - Ally as of Sly 3. Reskinned Bugbear seems to be the main race fit here. Guild Artisan - swap Persuasion for Intimidation. Going to go Artillerist Artificer/ Monk Multi-Class here (possibly Way of 4 Elements). Artillerist is going to be a big one here, but he needs some of that Flame Fu mojo flowing.
Dimirti - Enemy - turned - Ally (more like Trusted Friend if 4 is anything to go by). Lizardfolk with Entertainer background - he's, how you say, smooth criminal. I see a Rogue/Bard here, with Crossbow Expert. Granted, he's the team's Frogman, but he's almost as good as Sly with some of his moves.
The Guru - A Koala - might use Custom Lineage. Sage Background. A Monk/Druid for sure.
*Spoiler!* Penelope Mouse - Might go Custom. Urchin Background. Subclass depends on the time when the campaign is set - in Sly 3, she's an Ally, who uses a Remote Controlled car (so, Battle Forge) but in Sly 4, she's an Enemy in an armored suit (Armorer). But, maybe she can be redeemed - Coopers' seem to do that to a number of former foes.
The Ancestors - All are Reskinned Tabaxi at any rate.
Rioichi - Ninja Chef - invented Sushi. Needs Chef Feat. Rogue/Monk multi-class.
"Tennessee Kid" - Old West Outlaw - Something of a Crackshot. Needs Crossbow Expert (or Gunner), maybe Sharpshooter too. Might go Ranger/Dex-based Fighter.
Bob - Caveman - I see him as a Barbarian, with more Charisma than Intelligence.
Sir Galleth - Knight - Cavalier Fighter/Swashbuckler Rogue.
Salim - Leader of The 40 Thieves - Rogue/Monk sort - hates snakes!

Tulok, I actually love the idea of this build! Sly is sneaky, but in combat he's way more of a skirmisher than an assassin and Monk does that well.
My only modification would be to take the Mobile feat instead of one of the Wis increases! Sly's battle tactics are about hitting and running, and being able to avoid opportunity attacks for free is almost mandatory for a melee build that dumped Con

You are proficient with short swords as a rogue. This weapon is used by Rictavio in Curse of Strahd:
Sword Cane. Melee Weapon Attack: +4 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 4 (1d6 + 1) bludgeoning damage (wooden cane) or piercing damage (silvered sword).
The simplest move is to call this a short sword as the damage matches up and it is clearly finesse in both cane and sword form. This way you can build entirely thief from 1-20 if you give Sly this item. He just doesn’t take the sword out of the cane.

I think just about all of the main cast of Outlaw Star could make for some interesting builds; granted, some of them have very specific weapons at their disposal, Gene Starwind with his Caster (a gun that fires off spells stored in specially made shells), and Suzuka with her Bokken (a wooden sword, called a boukudo at least once in the English dub for some reason). Suzuka might be an interesting build, she's known in-universe as an assassin and based on how she operates I think she might be a Monk (Kensei)/Rogue (Assassin) type character. Gene would probably be a straightforward Fighter (Gunslinger) but he has been known to have a few tricks up his sleeve; Jim would likely be an Intelligence-based class (probably an Artificer, given his lean towards the technical aspects of things); Aisha would probably be a Barbarian, given her brawler tendencies, but would probably have to dip into Druid a bit to get her in-universe race's special transformation.
Going into the more typical Fantasy setting, a few of the main cast of That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime could make for some interesting builds. Rimuru, the primary protagonist of the series, will likely have to take his race from one of the Juiblixian subraces and maybe one of the specific racial Feats found in the same document that explains the Juiblixian (Juiblexian Race - Slimes Just Want to Adventure); Gobata might be interesting to see as a build, he's a Hobglin and those are a playable race now. As for the Kijin (a subrace of ogres in the series that are stated to be incredibly rare and powerful upgraded versions of standard ogres), last I checked, Ogre wasn't yet a playable race. Although, some of the dragonewts (upgraded versions of lizardfolk in-universe) might be interesting to see, and to be honest, I kind of want to see just how Gabiru will get built, the guy has a lot of Charisma and his ego from all the praising of others around him causes him to not think as much as he should but he is shown a few times to be smarter than he looks.

I really like this one. Sly is surprisingly complicated to get right in 5e and this is probably the best no-homebrew build you could do for him. Personally if a DM says they are fine with giving you a finessed cane I would go 10 rogue and 10 Bard, Sly always has some witty banter and spell stealing some Paladin spells to simulate some moves you get in 2 and 3 (elemental weapon) and pass without trace. Also I would wonder your opinion on these: Bentley- Artilerist Artificer, Murray- Monk Paladin (sage advice says unarmed strikes are “melee weapon attacks” which means you can searing smite for that Fist of Flame)

Make it a sword cane. And 19th century French men learned to fence with canes, the more skilled cane fencers regularly beat swordsmen with swords. There was something similar in Japan. And it was highly impressive.

  • @MrNickPresley

Given the curved shape of the Cooper Cane, and how he tends to use to hang on to things and snatch stuff, you could technically re-flavor a sickle (which I believe is both a monk weapon AND finesse-able) and it would work just fine for the purposes of a thief build.

If we're really going to focus on the cane as a main weapon and not take as many levels of rogue I'd go with 9 levels of Archfey Tome warlock instead of monk. Tome can give you Shillelagh to buff your cane(club) to 1d8 plus Cha, archfey gives you some of the mobility tools baseline monk gives, and the invocations for at will jump, levitate, and turning invisible when you stand in a shadow give you most of the stuff shadow monk gives. Plus, 2 5th level spell slots and 10 spells known off the warlock list can cover most of your bases for stealthing in the shadows.
And with only 9 levels in warlock you can take rogue to 11, get sneak attack up to 6d6, and use a dagger for stealth takedowns while the cane is for boss fights that see you coming.

Episode #144 of the FIre Emblem stats: Sly Cooper.
His weapon strengths are in lances (closest thing to a cane), bows, and reason (he can use lightning). In addition, he's great at authority. He doesn't have any weaknesses.
His best stat is obviously charm, but dexterity and luck aren't too far behind. The only bad stats he has are both types of defenses and HP.
