:Fair use is a legal doctrine that promotes freedom of expression by permitting the unlicensed use of copyright-protected works in certain circumstances. Section 107 of the Copyright Act provides the statutory framework for determining whether something is a fair use and identifies certain types of uses-such as criticism, comment, news reporting, teaching, scholarship, and research-as examples of activities that may qualify as fair use. Hope you are doing well. You look quite a bit younger than me, and I don't know how much time you have spent in the USA, if any, so you probably don't have a lot of the context behind this song.
The most important thing to understand about this song is its political message. It was released in 1989, and the timing is really important to the lyrics.
The "tired old man that we elected king" was Ronald Reagan. "Beating plowshares into swords" is an altered version of a Bible verse, specifically Isaiah 2:4.
"And he shall judge among the nations, and shall rebuke many people: and they shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruninghooks: nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war any more."
Note that, in the Bible verse, "they shall beat swords into plowshares" to stop warring and put down their weapons. In this song, "they're beating plowshares into swords" to start wars. And that's precisely what Reagan did.
This was a strong liberal protest song aimed at the hypocrisy between Reagan's rhetoric about optimism and his aw-shucks personality and the terrible things he did as President of the United States. Reagan's image of America was a very innocent place, but the reality of America's policies, especially foreign policy, was anything but innocent.
"O Beautiful for spacious skies" is a line from the patriotic song "America the Beautiful." But the next line "but now those skies are threatening" is a reference to bombs being dropped by the USA.
The second half of the Reagan administration was beset by scandals, especially the Iran-Contra Affair. Reagan lied about this (hence the lyric "since Daddy had to lie").
Ronald Reagan was President from 1981 to 1989. He was a conservative, and liberals like Don Henley and Bruce Hornsby (and me for that matter) despise him. Donald Trump wants to be like Reagan but is not nearly as slick and polished. But they are both evil men. Bruce Hornsby co-wrote this song with Don Henley and played piano on the studio recording.
