Sam, you're just a legend. The value you have brought to the filmmaking community is immeasurable. What a privilege to have access to even some of your experience and knowledge, especially through Kolder Creative. It's always crazy to me seeing some of my friends straight up rejecting custom keyboard shortcuts or the entirety of DaVinci Resolve (probably bc its "too much work to learn"). Maybe this video will convince them to give it another try :)
Because when you speed up the editing you can save that time to put into writing scripts and researching new projects. New content doesn’t come from the editing, it comes from the writing and research. Editing should be the *SHORT* part of the process. If you have well organized ideas in pre production, then the filming and editing of footage should fall into place and almost “edit itself”. So this guy has mastered the editing so he doesn’t waste any time on projects he already has finished filming.
@@rolandcsuka1829 quality over quantity ask marvel and other films what happens when rush and take on more films they look and feel rushed. This video was super helpful! It's great how easy, fast and detailed you explain everything and I feel it is totally on point. Personally, I don't only learn new things from this video but the overall workflow and attention you bring to it is something you can feel and that alone motivates me a ton to become better and strive for what I want to express as a creator and filmmaker! Big thanks from my heart for your unwavering dedication as a pioneer for this community!
Just wanted to let you know, I bought your course and it is absolutely phenomenal. Still working my way through it, but so far it's been well organized, thorough, and you're great at explaining everything. I was intimidated by Davinci Resolve, but you've made it much more manageable. Thanks so much!
Started with Davinci Resolve 3 years ago, wayyyy before the hype, still using it to this day cause the updates on the program are getting better and better. I'm so glad that one of my idols is recommending this program. LISTEN TO THE 10TH POINT!
7:12 - Bro honestly this was the best tip I ever heard! Started years ago using the cut tool, then used x for cutting l + k for fast forward and so on ... Now using these shortcuts for 2 weeks I am three times faster in my projects! Thank you
Sorry but Davinci resolve is a bad software. The Best is Photoshop. And your edits are all orange in color its a little cringe. Not liking this video. Dislike!
It's interesting how I often to video editing at work and I didn't think about customizing the shortcuts. Always used the built in ones and you are right. They are not optimal! I greatly appreciate this information. Thanks a lot! Also, for anyone who wanting to use the "Trim Mode" that he displayed in Resolve, the equivalent is the Slip Tool in Premiere.
Just customised my keyboard shortcuts, so pumped about this, instead of moving all over the place on the keyboard. You are too cool for school! Thanks!
This has been one of the most helpful videos I have ever found on youtube, I have regularly come back to rewatch specific parts. Super to the point and informative, great work!
I remember telling my wife a few years ago that "If Sam ever put out a course on film and editing, I would jump at the chance". I'm now a student in the KC Community and its phenomenal. Hearing the thought process and seeing the workflow from someone who is clearly obsessed with an insanely high attention to detail, style and efficiency just blows my mind that we live in such a cool time that we get to do that. I'm so grateful to really learn from the LEGEND. The most amazing thing is this is a full-on course on how to edit using Davinci Resolve which is something I've wanted to learn how to use, but didn't know where to start. Its pretty rad to see how we can add so much more depth to our story. The learning changes your view of reality in an instant. It changes what you think is possible in editing and story telling. What really got me actually pretty stoked and something I never thought I would like- was the sound editing and design. Because of Sam's course, I look at film and music differently now. I get to "hear" what a discerning ear looks for through his walk-throughs. See what makes an epic film really stand out from the legend himself, it will open your mind in ways its never thought of before. Sam takes it to another level.
Hi Sam! That was such a helpful video. I loved how you kept it simple, so that even people that don't have an in-depth knowledge of editing - like me - can learn from. I have never thought about the idea of Virtual Desktops, which I will definitely start implementing. Loved also the tips about shortcuts! Will be changing them today. Thank you!
Thank you for this Sam! This has been something I should have learned when I first started editing. It's crazy how quick and efficient the editing process can be with these tips!
Excellent! I wasn't sure about switching to Resolve but with these two videos I'm fully convinced. The mouse tip and the one is around minute 7 are my favorites, thanks a lot!!!!!
Awesome! Love tip 10! As an editor of only a couple years, I was happy to see that I knew a good majority of these tips! haha Another tip I recently discovered in Resolve is Ctrl+Shift+, or . which will just move a clip left or right in the track and swap places with what's next to it. This can probably be assigned to custom buttons to make it faster, but since I don't use it much, I'll probably just leave it.
Trim mode is the most useful idea for me by far. Before, I was doing exactly what you described for this. Its so useful I might even give Davinci a go too
Good morning Sam, I just recently switched to Davinci resolve from adobe premiere pro. I've been a premiere pro user since 2019 and have really enjoyed it. However I'm really finding a new love for DaVinci. I love the tips you showcased in this video and I look forward to more.
As a video editor for 10+ years, it's amazing how many of these discoveries have been similar to ones I've found/made to become a more productive editor.
Wow, that is definitely the most useful video editing tips we've seen! Shortcuts tips are simply brilliant! Thank you so much for sharing this! Now it's time to go back to editing :)
This was so useful! Every tip was incredibly helpful, and not the same kinda tips you see in similar titled videos. Even the sponsored content and the plugins I found useful/ interesting and would want to invest in. The shortcuts are game changing 🙌🏽
Do you ever EQ your audio? I can hear in your audio that the low end is not 'cleaned up'. I would recommend cutting your frequency from 70-80Hz, as a starting point. Then your plosives won't be audible. Unless you do this intentionally, but thought I'd reach out to help :) Great video and thanks for the tips! As a beginner in video editing, this is very helpful. Thank you!!
Glad to see you made the switch DV... proper editing and hard core color grading. Very interested in seeing you push fusion to the max. Keep up the great posts.
im only 3 minutes in but this video is already so amazing! idk why i havent been watching editing videos. im still so mind blown about these virtual desktops
When you give such great advice it's so much easier to tolerate a plug for your courses. I feel like I have to introduce shortcuts one by one in order to remember them though 😅 Or just need to edit more... It's probably the latter
Omg, thank you for telling about the short cuts, ive just started learning video editing (in dav Vinci) and the blade, arrow, ripple was driving me nuts!
Love those tips Sam! I noticed for myself how far I've gotten with making things more efficient throughout the years, but some of these I still haven't implemented.
I'm an amateur editor who has always loved film and has a knack for story and visual ideas (which I couldn't ever represent properly lol). I honestly think I've turned myself off editing from all the stress over the last 6+ years (occasional project, biting off more than I could chew; I don't have any on my account fyi). This video helped me feel a bit inspired again, vindicating my choice for DVR two years ago and teaching a few new tricks as well. If I get to a stage in my life where I make videos again, I'm going to do your course. Sounds like it'll answer my very particular questions and you have the expertise to get those visual effects results with nodes, or at least help me to know when and where to spend long amounts of time.
one of the few people who recommend a gaming mouse. I second this. I use the Razer Naga which is a 17 button MMORPG gaming mouse. Where your thumb sits has 12 programable buttons and my step 1 frame forward and 1 frame back are the 2 and 5 keys plus modifiers for shift and alt do even more keys. Turns the 17 button gaming mouse into a 50 keyboard shortcut option with just your right hand. It works great in Cinema4d.
I'm also hoping you could share what the "step 1 frame forward and 1 frame back" commands are called in the keyboard customization panel, I've been searching for these for a while now as they would be so useful!
Great video with lots of amazing input; after 30 years on Avid i recently switched to DaVinci) Thanks man; great tutorial; loved the keyboard, spaces and mouse parts most 🙏
This video just confirms what I was thinking over the past year. I've done pretty much all of these tips. Bought the Samsung Odyssey G9 49" curved monitor, I 16 programmable button mouse from Red Dragon. Started using shortcut keys etc. I've just switched to Davinci due to my Film Production course telling me that we're only allowed to use that software and then later on we're to learn Avid. I agree on all of these tips, I couldn't ever go back to editing straight from my laptop trackpad, it's so mind numbingly slow. Great video Mr, thanks for your input 👍
i audibly gasped at the trim tool one lol, i don't know how i never heard that before, but thanks for this video! i learned a lot of new things from it and i appreciate the real time and effort put into this.
Every time I get a notification Sam posted something new, I add it to my task list of things to do! I hope KC has some sort of sale this year for black friday/cyber monday/holiday because it's just outside of what I can spend... If not, then I'll keep saving up, as I would love to see what he has to say and what I can incorporate into my work.
Wow oooo this is so insightful, educative. I didn't wait to finish watching the video i just went straight to subscribe to the channel. Thanks bro you are simply the best!
