ive been playing fighting games for about 9 years, and i originally started with jojos HFTF, and MVC3, eventually switching to GGST competitively. my entire perception of fighting games was this super neutral based, 2D game with virtually no pressure other than a single mixup, into a TOD. so mechanically I was totally fine coming into tekken, but for everything else i basically felt like i had to relearn fighting games all over again, considering how ultra important frame data and MU knowledge was in particularly tekken compared to other fighters where you can just mindlessly run your own offense without thinking, as well as it being a 3d fighter! I won't lie, when I came into the chat I JUST got off of a loss that felt really frustrating and my question was toned with half-asking and half-venting. After that it was a huge snowball; I accidentally gave the wrong frametraps I was using because I was scared of being made fun of but it actually led to more backlash from the chat specifically. I purposely said frametraps that I knew were sure to work, or i thought would work properly. (For those who are wondering, i was actually using wr2 into db3+4 or wr2 into d2, which we all know has a ginormous gap and I'm getting hopkicked for very obvious reasons on that) It was initially really stressful and i started to panic really bad cuz it felt like the spotlight was just blasted on me by a lot of people that I'm normally not used to receiving, so I kinda had the instinct to run away and just never look back, but it was still a great opportunity to learn something new. I really appreciate phidx's empathy and everyone else who was also very considerate about how I was being treated at the time, but it's really no worries now. I've also dropped dragunov for a while and am playing bryan, and already got him to garyu and notice my defense has improved dramatically from switching to a fucking hyper-aggressive semitruck, to a very defensive counterhit machine. very excited to progress, next goal is blue ranks! thank u guys for the help/support
Keep on keeping on. Learning with everyone on a new release is an unparalleled communal experience. Bothering to bring this up and learn despite the blowback is huge.
just to mention, I think that the problem with your question wasn't even how you put it. it was the fact that you were asking about offense and being frustrated about your rank. ranking up doesn't correlate directly to playing better. if you focus into getting higher ranks, you will get good at getting ranks, not at playing tekken. trying to learn fundamentals will actually make you lose ranks, naturally, because it involves defensive play in an offensive oriented game. it involves execution, timing and interacting with your opponent instead of shutting their gameplay with offense. just to mention, there is nothing wrong in just wanting to rank up the easiest way, if that's what you want cool for you. but if you actually want to get better naturally and explore your full potential in the long, long run (talking about years), you should start to invest on defense and fundamentals. I would suggest to get another character as the "learning character", so you don't care about their rank, and keep dragunov as your main "tryhard" character, so you can have both and enjoy the game on your own pace

As much as I can understand the perspective in the moment of roasting him, especially mid-game (and a stressful game at that) and mid-stream, at the end of the day it's a person on the other side of the screen who's genuinely trying to learn by asking a question. There's no harm in saying that you'll come back to that person after the fight and answer them then. You can even grill them a little bit for asking a question in the right way, but that's way better than straight up roasting or shooting them on the spot. It's nice to see you correct this mentality and it's one of the reasons I really enjoy your content, man: humble and analytic are major strengths for your channel. As ever, thanks for the upload! When i first got into tekken (tekken 7) my buddy played king and i kept eating his shining wizard. He eventually stood up and screamed at me to fucking duck or break the throw. Will never forget that moment and will always stick with me. Most people that are willing to help you are going to rib you from time to time but its all in the fun of learning. PS: I can break shining wizard now. =)

The guy clearly didn't put the bare amount of effort to know what move he or Lars player used before asking the question .
tbf, as a new player, going into the movelist of someone you dont play can be very intimidating as there are like 90+ moves and finding the one that hit you could be overwhelming for them. @@DiegoXRA

Their flaws are all really unique and even when watching their matches, no one can adapt for them or always be there to point out all answers. Just hit Kishin last night. One of the biggest things that helps me is taking my time and being deliberate with my moves. Watching what the opponent is doing and using my characters tools to work around what they’re doing. I still get hit with cheese now and then, but with enough practice, I’ll be able to deal with cheese a bit better.

I like how Phi is trying to navigate his success, being in a spotlight gives you a lot of backslash and responsibilities and instead of "faking" the geniune approach I appreciate him being himself and roasting people here and there but always making a point of showing that nothing is ill intended by spending extra time to fix the situation and give it a learning experience for him and his audience. As a creator myself I struggle sometimes with that and I have a lot of respect for it.

I respect what you did and said PhiDX. And you touched on an important point later - you were on the vergef of losing when the question came in. Anyone who interacts with people. There is a real effect that fight stress and losing has on the immediate mood. Once the match was out of your head you did a respectable job helping him out.
if your +8 ur opponent cant do cr@p unless your using slow enough moves, like 14f+ I dont have t8 so but in previous games the first evasion frame from sidestep activates in 6f, sidewalk in 8f, backdash in 7, moving foward and extending hitbox in 4 frames, low crush usually at 9f and high crush usually at 4, duck and low parry at 1f, and the fastest parries at 2f. Those are how many frames your opponent needs to perform an action, doing a correct frame trap needs to take into account, or at least testing every option against a mixup, but knowing the height of the move, the tracking of the move, and comparing those to how many frames your opponent needs to beat that move, can be done in match instantly by pros or anyone, because guess what, knowing those numbers by heart, for years, gets pretty repetitive.
Love your videos, while there's lot of repeated stuff it doesn't hurt and there is always a new thing to learn (character specific at the very least) and you always choose new angles. Keep it up, hope your numbers keep improving, happy you are getting the attention you deserve!

Sorry if that sounds like I´m telling you what to do, I do have a bit of a language barrier (german native). All I´m trying to say is I bet a most people would understand and wait a bit, and you wouldn´t have to stress yourself out in your matches. Love your streams, love your videos.

Frame traps to dictate situations and punishment gets you from greens to reds. Alternating your timing to be unpredictable, recognizing opponent's tendencies, and keeping your spacing tight/reducing whiffs gets you beyond.
I'm positively suprised at how much consideration you've put for this one chatter. Like you said, any other streamer in your place would've mocked him or insta-banned him.
On one hand, it was easier to learn Tekken during the T3/TTT1 era because the game was less complex. However since TTT2 a lot of new players want to be spoonfed information without having to lab themselves, or as Aris calls it, "having someone else do your homework". This is a game where you can literally take control of your own replay, and people are not taking advantage of that feature...but in their defense the game doesn't actually teach you this.
9:04 I'm sorry to jump in here after all this time. This video just came across my feed. I 100% agree every player has the tools to lab and learn, and probably don't know how to use those tools correctly. This has happened to me and probably too many others. I know where I come from and I'm grateful for having pros that help us casuals understand the game better
I got the low and mid/high parrys on lock in practice and training. Figures out alot of punishes and got better at sidestepping too in training. Very useful
I skipped to the end because i seen the original upload, thought Phi was a bit harsh, but seems he's took the criticism on board, which is nice to see.
I think a good takeaway from this is to not try too much to fix a problem when you're frustrated. Come back later with a clear head and you look at your issues with with a more objective perspective.
Being stuck in red ranks means your fundamentals are still lacking. Train your character, learn your tools, try them online, thats enough for red rank. Learn what are the generic tools, how do you punish them, work on defense, grab breaks and side stepping, that's already purple rank territory. Now comes the hard part. Learn each character's match ups and here is where the real game begins.
It would be cool if more streamers/RUclipsrs would show their own labbing. There is so much content where we can see how people play the game but it's so much harder to find insight into how to properly learn the game.

Tenryu, Kazuya myself. Nearing mighty ruler. I lose 400 points playing someone who is two ranks higher than me(who should usually win) but then I play someone two ranks lower than me and only win 200 points. No wonder the people two ranks lower never won run a rematch when they lose, they’re losing 400 on a match that they’re expected to most likely lose.
Do you guys have any advice to help with the mentality to stop choking games? I feel like it happens to me all the time I go up 2-0 and then all of a sudden final round and I lose. Currently stuck in orange rank with Jin and idk what I’m doing wrong tbh. I know my combos need work but sometimes I feel like I can’t even hit a button, my punishes are ok I know I need better work with it. I probably just need a break from Tekken overall tbh I got super frustrated tonight 😅 I know losing is part of the process but man it’s a painful road. P.S. I come from Street Fighter so I understand the transition is a hard one and it takes time.
This is probably the most important semi beginner/intermediate video for Tekken 8 that there is. A practical example of how to use the beautiful tools this game provides to encourage self learning and improvement. I wish it was titled a little more......"generically" so that it appealed to a wider audience. Something along the lines of, "You don't need help to improve at Tekken 8" or something
I broke the red ranks but im a hard stuck mighty ruler now because of knowledge checks. All the characters in that rank are rare menaces, Leo, Yoshi, Hwoarang, Nina. Characters that are strong because you don't know how to respond.
I dont lab too much but if those characters give you some trouble then punishment training is good! It’s not going to give you practice on avoiding getting hit by their panic moves… but at least you’ll see their punishable strings/moves
No game ever teaches you how to use training mode, so most people just use it to get combos down and that's it. I play SF6 and there are so many tabs and options, I don't even know where to find things sometimes-it's a mess. I think the worst thing, which is kinda demonstrated in this video, is that you probably don't know a character, so you can't even replicate what they did, or maybe they're DLC so you don't even have the option to lab. This is why the ability to play during a replay is so brilliant and I hope it becomes a common feature in games and is added in SF6.

I think even if you aren't hyper focused on your rank; when asking a stranger for help it's a good reference point to provide so that they have an idea of where you're at and can give appropriate advice.

I respect what you did and said PhiDX. And you touched on an important point later - you were on the vergef of losing when the question came in. Anyone who interacts with people. There is a real effect that fight stress and losing has on the immediate mood. Once the match was out of your head you did a respectable job helping him out.
if your +8 ur opponent cant do cr@p unless your using slow enough moves, like 14f+
I dont have t8 so but in previous games the first evasion frame from sidestep activates in 6f, sidewalk in 8f, backdash in 7, moving foward and extending hitbox in 4 frames, low crush usually at 9f and high crush usually at 4, duck and low parry at 1f, and the fastest parries at 2f.
Those are how many frames your opponent needs to perform an action, doing a correct frame trap needs to take into account, or at least testing every option against a mixup, but knowing the height of the move, the tracking of the move, and comparing those to how many frames your opponent needs to beat that move, can be done in match instantly by pros or anyone, because guess what, knowing those numbers by heart, for years, gets pretty repetitive.
To reiterate what I said last time: Step 1 is admitting you have a problem. Step 1.5 is knowing what the problem _is._
Love your videos, while there's lot of repeated stuff it doesn't hurt and there is always a new thing to learn (character specific at the very least) and you always choose new angles. Keep it up, hope your numbers keep improving, happy you are getting the attention you deserve!

From the viewpoint as a twitchviewer though, I feel like you should allow yourself to not answer question while you are in a match, you don´t need to ignore them, just say "ask again after the match". Sorry if that sounds like I´m telling you what to do, I do have a bit of a language barrier (german native). All I´m trying to say is I bet a most people would understand and wait a bit, and you wouldn´t have to stress yourself out in your matches.

Frame traps to dictate situations and punishment gets you from greens to reds. Alternating your timing to be unpredictable, recognizing opponent's tendencies, and keeping your spacing tight/reducing whiffs gets you beyond.
I'm positively suprised at how much consideration you've put for this one chatter. Like you said, any other streamer in your place would've mocked him or insta-banned him.

On one hand, it was easier to learn Tekken during the T3/TTT1 era because the game was less complex. However since TTT2 a lot of new players want to be spoonfed information without having to lab themselves, or as Aris calls it, "having someone else do your homework". This is a game where you can literally take control of your own replay, and people are not taking advantage of that feature...but in their defense the game doesn't actually teach you this.

I got the low and mid/high parrys on lock in practice and training. Figures out alot of punishes and got better at sidestepping too in training. Very useful

Being stuck in red ranks means your fundamentals are still lacking.
Train your character, learn your tools, try them online, thats enough for red rank.
Learn what are the generic tools, how do you punish them, work on defense, grab breaks and side stepping, that's already purple rank territory.
Now comes the hard part. Learn each character's match ups and here is where the real game begins.

I lose 400 points playing someone who is two ranks higher than me(who should usually win) but then I play someone two ranks lower than me and only win 200 points. No wonder the people two ranks lower never won run a rematch when they lose, they’re losing 400 on a match that they’re expected to most likely lose.
Do you guys have any advice to help with the mentality to stop choking games? I feel like it happens to me all the time I go up 2-0 and then all of a sudden final round and I lose. Currently stuck in orange rank with Jin and idk what I’m doing wrong tbh. I know my combos need work but sometimes I feel like I can’t even hit a button, my punishes are ok I know I need better work with it. I probably just need a break from Tekken overall tbh I got super frustrated tonight 😅 I know losing is part of the process but man it’s a painful road.
P.S. I come from Street Fighter so I understand the transition is a hard one and it takes time.

I broke the red ranks but im a hard stuck mighty ruler now because of knowledge checks. All the characters in that rank are rare menaces, Leo, Yoshi, Hwoarang, Nina. Characters that are strong because you don't know how to respond.
I dont lab too much but if those characters give you some trouble then punishment training is good! It’s not going to give you practice on avoiding getting hit by their panic moves… but at least you’ll see their punishable strings/moves
No game ever teaches you how to use training mode, so most people just use it to get combos down and that's it. I play SF6 and there are so many tabs and options, I don't even know where to find things sometimes-it's a mess. I think the worst thing, which is kinda demonstrated in this video, is that you probably don't know a character, so you can't even replicate what they did, or maybe they're DLC so you don't even have the option to lab. This is why the ability to play during a replay is so brilliant and I hope it becomes a common feature in games and is added in SF6.
