As a middle school science teacher, I thoroughly enjoyed coming along for the ride and geeking out on all the science in your video, not to mention the incredible scenery! Thanks for such a spectacular journey!
Awesome video Eric! I know the gear videos get the views, but your creativity and personality shine in your recent hiking videos! I’m currently working through editing episodes of my Great Divide Trail thru hike and youre a great inspiration. Thanks for the great entertainment!
Thank you so much! While I do enjoy gear focused videos, these are certainly a lot more creatively interesting to make for me. So honored I am an inspiration to you!
I’m a huge fan of yours! I enjoy your gear reviews and I really enjoy your team up hike videos. But, this video and the nature documentary style you’re doing here makes this one my favourite video yet. More like this please and thanks for bringing us along!
Dude, this is my favorite video of yours so far. Your enthusiasm and gratitude were palpable. I want to do that hike. Thank you for all you do, sweet man!
You truly do a GREAT job of capturing the beauty of nature and your joy at being in it. I have felt it many times and I thank you for reviving that feeling. And, being a native of Arizona, thanks for sharing the incredible diversity of the Arizona landscape.
My god man, your level of videos are reaching some serious top quality! I won’t be surprised if your channel explodes even more than it already has. Super great work, so epic!
I had no idea that AZ had volcanos, that's a trip! I'm in the PNW about 45 minutes from the gate of Mt. Rainer and know about the volcanos of the Cascades and also the Yellowstone area. Why is it something we don't hear about? It's absolutely amazing in that area! I might just have to go check it out!
Eric thank you so much for your trip videos. The gear reviews and loadouts with you opinions are good, but your eye for beauty in nature is spectacular. This looks like a place I would love to visit.
Great video Eric! I just came up from Snowbowl, camped on Humphreys and climbed up for sunrise as I passed through on the AZT last week. Thank you for the great geology information and for capturing the unbelievable aspens and sunrise. Happy trails.
Your joy and awe in this video are highlighted by its beauty, thank you once again for your exceptional video, I had no idea AZ had any volcanic history, it's now on my growing to-do list. This is why I tell people to subscribe to your YT channel!
Omg I love those aspen groove or one aspen. So beautiful and the colors are amazing. You captured it perfectly and it’s beautiful. It hard to believe you’re not in Colorado but in Arizona. Just added this place to my bucket list. Thank you for sharing this amazing place ❤
Ty for the latest hike to Humphrey’s peak, Eric. I vacationed with the fam in your state twice (I have a relative there). I totally agree that Arizona has some amazing places to visit and some wildly varied terrain. From the Senoran desert to the Grand Canyon, (of which varies in terrain itself between the North and South rim as you know), Canyon De Chey and the Petrified forest, the red rocks of Sedona, good ol Rt 66 (Loved Oatman’s western charm), and the volcanos of/around Humphrey’s peak, it truly is an amazing state in our country. I actually saw the peak from a distance when visiting Flagstaff on my second trip out, so this adventure was a cool new perspective seeing it up close and from the top. The trees did not surprise me as there seem to be in abundance in higher elevations around AZ., (The overwhelming scent of the pine trees along the North Rim of the Grand Canyon is the first thing that hit me going there)(Not falling off the path at Angel Point as the winds gusted up there was the next sensation as I actually almost witnessed an elderly couple stumble off the path and over the side, (Luckily regaining their balance). The “single entity” aspect of the Aspens you mentioned reminds me of the movie Avatar, in which the “Spirit Trees” were similarly connected. I saw a Nat Geo documentary that said the volcanic activity was due to what you stated in the start of the vid, which was the result of the land mass moving over the geological “hot spot” under Yellowstone. They said the movement of the plates, when a mountain region settles over the hotspot, acts as a cork stopper allowing pressure to build under it. When the pressure becomes too great it blows up, then the spot gets moved again by the plates until the process is repeated. As always this was an awsome vid and again ty for sharing it and stay safe out there.
Thank you for these spectacular views. After running from the summer heat in CO I return to Fort Valley and the ski areas, running again to avoid the southbound cold. These sights are a special treat.
Out state has such a diversity of geology and plant zones. I live in Tucson and So AZ looks like a totally different world. We have Aspens in the Sky Islands around our city. Us Arizonans are so lucky.
I love all of your videos, but this was my favorite so far! I loved watching and learning more about the peaks literally in my backyard! Totally geeking out with you! Thank you!
Amazing video! I have photographed this part of Arizona from an airplane window and always wondered what it looks like from the ground. Very well done!
Great hike! Early geologists couldn’t wrap their heads around the make up of those mountains until st Helen’s blew. Then it all collapsed into place 😜. It still boggles my mind how volcanic Arizona and New Mexico is when I grew up surrounded by them in Washington. If you haven’t done so already, check out Nick Zentner and Shawn Willsey, both FABULOUS geology professors. Totally reignites your geeky side! My hikes take twice as long because I’m studying the ground and trying to figure it out haha
And here I am hardly being able to move after doing 6 miles at 600' elevation yesterday. You sir and a few others on this platform are the inspiration for me swapping out miles for pounds of body fat. Slowly but surely making the miles per day longer because of videos like this.
Eric you just continue to up your game with every video, unbelievable. Was like watching a National Geographic special, but better video, more interesting and much cooler. Had to remind myself this was a hiking video. I mean that as a sincere compliment. Thanks for showing us this part of AZ and educating us on the geological history.
well that is high praise! I am certainly inspired by Nat Geo and would love to be considered even in their ball park. I try to get better all the time!
Wow! Impressive hike! I did the traditional route in June and coming from the valley floor it was like hiking in slow motion at that altitude. The tundra and flowers along the way were a highlight. Hopefully you hit Mama B’s on the way back to town to replenish your calories!
Ah man this makes me insanely homesick. Born and raised in AZ, and lived, worked and hiked Flag/GC/Sedona before eventually moving away. I still miss it and look for any excuse to come back.
I’m really excited to see that you are still using the Shadowlite backpack. I bought the smaller 45 L backpack, and their KotaUL 45 L travel backpack. For right now… these should be good entry backpacking bags for my wife and for me.
Amazing video and love the colors. Your videos are unbelievable and I love them all. Would you ever consider doing a trip up Colorado's Highest peak Mt. Elbert? I would love to see your video from that. It is an epic climb with epic views.
This video had me getting a bit misty to be honest. Many of my favorite memories of growing up in Flagstaff was the hiking and camping trips into the inner basin with my dad when I was a kid in the late 70’s. My dad was still in the USFS back then and would take us up to his favorite places in the spring, summer, and especially the fall. One of my favorite places on earth to be sure. Looking forward to returning with my kids someday to share the majesty of the most beautiful place in Arizona. Thanks, Eric. It was a stellar trip down memory lane. 🙂
Wow! I love extinct volcanoes. They're a lot less intimidating than live volcanoes 😂 Seriously though, this looks like a trail I need to add to my list. It's fascinatingly beautiful.
I love seeing your passion shine through on this one. Exploring that crater with you was mind blowing!! It’s always wild to think we are in such an area and that the peaks were once a massive volcano. What a marvel. Thank you for being you so authentically ❤️
Gotta give you props for your camera work on the intro scene! You got some of my favorite shots in the whole video! It was so fun exploring that wild crater with you.
26:10 i'm glad someone else knows the shortcut 😉. You should also check out some of the fault lines in Sedona if you are interested in the tectonic plate activity in Northern Arizona.
My brother and I Summited Humphrey peak from the snow bowl side back in July which round trip was the same distance as it was just to your campsite. The view was so beautiful from up there. Questions I thought I saw signs saying there was no camping above 11,400 ft or the tree line?
Can you hike across the lava flows? If so this is definitely going into my bucket list. Going through the lava to get to Paricutín in Michoacán was the most unique and amazing hike I've done. It's quite surreal, you feel like you're on the surface of an alien planet or walking into Mordor. Which makes it even sadder to see it littered with trash all the way through. It doesn't help that that part of the country is kind of unsafe to travel these days unless you know someone from the area.
I do enjoy gear reviews and they have their place. But I have a lot more interests than that. I'll keep making more videos about what I'm passionate about!
What a cool place. I got tgat shoadowlght on your recommendation. Im glad ti see it on you in your last two videos, and good to know it can take some weight
Great aerial footage of the Peaks, but you might want to look up the regulations on flying drones within designated Wilderness before you go out again.
Hey! I actually only flew in National Forest areas. While there are lots of wilderness areas across the peaks, there are also quite a few sections of national forest. Even the shots of the peaks from the west side were flown from the national forest where Snowbowl is.
I have never marked a tree or rock during my 65 years of life. But I’ll tell you something youngster, I like those markings. No, I love the tree markings and some rock markings because I know I’m walking in the steps of history. Hold off on your preaching. Remember that you’re a child in some eyes, like mine and we don’t want your preaching.
On one hand, I have gone on hikes specifically to see petroglyphs left by the native people, but I think if you go out into the wilderness as an individual and don't respect Leave no Trace principles, you have no business being there. Keep the wilderness wild for future generations
I’m from Ohio. I flew into Arizona about 10 years ago for some business. I walked out of the airport and my skin started burning crazy how hot it is there compared to Ohio absolutely beautiful though I didn’t get to see much I wished I would have but what I didn’t get to see was absolutely beautiful.
Cool hike Eric you never disappoint
As a middle school science teacher, I thoroughly enjoyed coming along for the ride and geeking out on all the science in your video, not to mention the incredible scenery! Thanks for such a spectacular journey!
I love it! Might need to show your class this video on a rainy day.
@@eric_hanson I think that's a great idea!
Wow ... Amazing scenary and cinementography ... Thanks for sharing it with us ... Another entry to my bucket list?
Awesome video Eric! I know the gear videos get the views, but your creativity and personality shine in your recent hiking videos!

Wake up everyone new Eric Hanson video!
haha thanks Rainer! Perfect video to watch with a cup of coffee.
@@eric_hanson Agreed! My morning routine was complete watching this. Loved it! Awesome, beautiful, and informative video!!
This was simply stunning! And as a fellow geology enthusiast, this was as stimulating for the brain as it was a feast for the eyes! Thank you!
That's a high compliment! I appreciate that.
'pant' im having so much fun, 'wheeze' this is such a cool hike, 'gasp' worth it. lol
I legitimately had to cut out at least a dozen times I said how much fun I was having 😂
Wow! The colors and scenery and fascinating geology facts… I loved this! So beautiful. Your videos are always awesome.
Geology rocks! It's fun to share this side of my interests with people.
I’m a huge fan of yours! I enjoy your gear reviews and I really enjoy your team up hike videos. But, this video and the nature documentary style you’re doing here makes this one my favourite video yet. More like this please and thanks for bringing us along!
Thank you so much! While I certainly enjoy the gear centered videos, these are the kinds of videos I have the most fun making.
It was so cool learning more about the biology and geology of our backyard!! And seeing it up close like this was such a treat!
You can tell it's an aspen because of the way it is.
Dude, this is my favorite video of yours so far. Your enthusiasm and gratitude were palpable. I want to do that hike. Thank you for all you do, sweet man!
I really appreciate that. I had so much fun making this and I'm glad others are finding it fun and interesting as well.
Great capture of the shadow of the mountain in the morning. Definitely a rare shot. And those aspens were stunning. Hell of a hike!
Had to hustle to get that shadow shot. It puts into perspective just how big the mountain is as it pops up out of the surrounding landscape.
You truly do a GREAT job of capturing the beauty of nature and your joy at being in it. I have felt it many times and I thank you for reviving that feeling. And, being a native of Arizona, thanks for sharing the incredible diversity of the Arizona landscape.

oh nice! Yeah flying over the peaks and the volcano fields would be quite cool. But it's best to see it on foot!
Ooooh, this might be my favorite video of yours yet! Do you by any chance know which dome was the most recent to erupt?

It's a special place that people tend to come back to! I moved away for about ten years but this place drew me back in!
My family has been in the area for three generations, and it's nice seeing someone appreciate the peaks and share with their audience as well!
This is a special place. People gotta know how great it is here.
That area of Arizona is beautiful. People don't realize how many volcanoes are in the area. Similar in Idaho and Oregon as well.
The more I dove into making this video the more I was surprised by the geology of this area. It's soo cool.
Ey up fella.
One of your best in my opinion. Absolutely stunning morning shots and what a wondrous place, truly magical. 🙂👍
I appreciate this! I truly enjoyed making this one.

100% didn't realize we had aspens anywhere in AZ! You truly caught them at peak magic.
There are also some aspens in the White Mountains of eastern Arizona, but nothing quite matches Inner Basin!
5:24 really thought you were gonna say “This is an Aspen tree, you can tell it’s an Aspen by the way that it is” missed opportunity imo
I really blew it. I am so ashamed.
Love that area. Have done some hiking around Humphreys Peak. Great video. Enjoyed it.

Appreciate you taking all these awesome shots. Good looking video and awesome commentary as always.

Just hiked to the peek on Saturday 19 Oct, it was covered from this year’s first snow. This vid makes me wish I had hiked it sooner.

watching from the flattest part of ohio, where the concept of elevation does not exist, hoping to get some incredible views next year!
hmmm Ohio does present some challenges.
Thats some beautiful country you have there 🤩❤
The lava tubes near Flagstaff are fun too.
Yes! Those are fascinating too!
The world is an amazing place. I wish I had more time to see it all. Outstanding adventure.
Thank you! There are so many marvels we get to explore. Not enough time to see them all!
Awesome sunrise. Thanks for sharing.
Kind of mind blowing watching the sunrise from up there.
That was cool, man.
Excellent video, way better than gear reviews 😅

I have a similar hue to those aspens!
5:30 From a certain point of view, it's an absolutely massive furry critter!
And this was all so gorgeous!
What's the likelihood that the area was inhabited while there were glaciers?
It's pretty, but I don't like dry country. At least it has trees. I would have brought that much water and conserved every drop.
hiking volcano fields, so risky lol :|

Those film and retrieve the camera shots are no bueno on inclines. Gotta climb the same incline twice and nobody really appreciates it.
