      "Value for Money" VFM is actually the correct word. That is what Indians seek more. Cheap may mean compromise on quality and affordable is a relative thing. But every Indian always seeks a product that has more value for their money.

    This is called purchasing power parity. Foreigners don't understand this concept and thinks India is poor. But India ranked 3rd after China and US in terms of GDP PPP with 16 trillion usd and GDP PPP per capita is about 10,000 USD.

      Per Captia can be misleading - because India has a huge population. But if the PPP of just the middle class is taken into account, it would be comparable to or even better than that of many European countries.

    • @STARK50
      @STARK50 3 месяца назад +36

      @@AdithyaReddy15 GDP PPP is the correct method to judge a country a huge population. Cost of living is also a major factor in India. We may earn less than most of the countries, but we also spend less. That's why GDP PPP is correct because it shows how much we can afford with the same amount of money in our country compared to other.

      @@madhuparnaghosh6254 I understand where you are coming from, but here is my take. The responsibility of ensuring fair wages lies with the employers, not the customers. If restaurants charge a service fee, that should ideally go towards compensating staff. As a waged employee myself, I believe our spending shouldnot have to fill gaps left by businesses not paying their staff adequately. Tipping becomes an extra cost that may not always address the root problem of unfair wages. Also, when it comes to the quality or hygiene of food, we usually have no transparency. Without a clear standard of service or fairness in wage distribution, tipping on "belief" alone doesn't feel justified to me. It is not about wanting workers to earn less-it’s about holding employers accountable for providing fair pay and ensuring a system where customers don’t have to subsidize wages.

    things are cheap, yes. but quality standards are very low.
    try international brands : mountain dew in india tastes like candy soda. potato fries in lays are thinner. cadbury chocolates have more flour and sugar than chocolate to cut the costs. Indian food standard guidelines are at base level. In europe you need to have 'this much' percentage of chocolate in it to be sold as chocolate. In India it is floor level. This goes on with each and every product except plain water.
    Indian public and tourists can rejoice things are cheaper. But what you are eating are less nutritious sugar and fat rich junk.
    fruits are cheap because we make here with cheap labour. colder countries of europe and US has to export fruits from elsewhere.

    Most Indians use Basmati rice for special occasions in Indian festival times or celebrations at home. Otherwise daily consumption rice is a cheaper brand rice.
    I grew up eating the cheaper rice in India that my family will buy, but when I lived in US I used to buy the basmati rice as I find it easier to cook & better quality.
    Food is cheaper in India for 3 reasons, mass amounts of people consuming them keep costs low for some products, some foods have to be cheap for the poorer population with less income ( because we still have people who don't even earn 150 ₹ a day in some parts of India); and also with many brands there is less focus on quality due to poor regulations or poor execution of regulations here as well.
    Brand variability is true in any country, of the foreign known brands as well as local ones based on local tastes too.
