This is the first time I saw one of your videos and didnt feel like you weren't actually fully aware of what you were talking about. Usually im like "Okay, this kid likes rap music, & likes hip-hop music, but doesn't really seem Hip Hop (although I have no right to tell someone they arent Hip Hop unless they prove it themselves) and is just too young to know a lot of the history but at least it seems like he tries diligently to research well for each video, I can at least respect that he tries, hes not just trying to somehow benefit off of it for nothing in return like a lot of the other kids in his realm/field", but you made a distinction in this video about the difference between hip-hop music and pop-rap, (rap music isnt necessarily Hip Hop or hip-hop music, and nowadays often is not) and you actually provided me with something to think about afterwards. You're getting better homie, keep it up 🤘🏻 - pickd4prez
The cream rises to the top over time. It can be easy to look back and say there used to be more quality underground hip hop, but at the time it wasn’t mainstream, it wasn’t played on the radio, just like now you had to look for it. It’s way easier to look for it now.
it's far from dead it just looks different, there's tiers and shit underground hip hop is crowded and tough you gotta really fight for every play and every gig and it's not as much about album sales as it is about word of mouth and trying to get put on tours there's mainstream, what I'd call mid-stream, then there's underground which gets hella deep and very very buried at times
This is so true. I haven’t heard pure underground hip-hop in a long time. On HighFocus, SektionRed and GlobalFaction you still get some good underground hip-hop. Big respect to everyone keeping it alive. I think it’s better overseas personally than it is in the UK and US.
2002? Definitely a dope year, but Rawkus, Eastern Conference, Fondle'em, Solesides, Anticon, and Stones Throw Records started before that. 1998 had Blackstar, Killah Priest, Aceyalone, Heiroglyphics, The Dynospectrum, Jurassic 5, Rasco & Peanut Butter Wolf, ect...1999 had Pharoahe Monch, Kool Keith, Blackalicious, Atmosphere, MF DOOM, ect...2000 had Slum Village, Dead Prez, Quasimoto, Talib Kweli, Mos Def, JMT, Afu-Ra, Dilated Peoples Necro, Deltron, ect...2001 had Cannibal Ox, Typical Cats, Aesop Rock, J Dilla, Chino XL, J-Live, Masta Ace, Immortal Technique, Ugly Duckling
Funny tho that KRS-One released an album, Immortal Technique is doing an US tour and DangerDoom dropped a single ALL THIS MONTH. Also, Jedi Mind Tricks is still standing strong and K-Rino is about to drop an album within a few weeks. So Wat Cha Sayin'
Underground HipHop is Very Much Alive. You can find them performing weekends at the clubs and in the hood with the people every day. They are still called hood stars. I would rather have the raw and real rather than the main stream garbage used to taint something so beautiful.
underground isn't dead, regionalization is. People aren't as hot in their hometowns as they would be before the internet, but now "underground" artists are gaining traction slowly off rising thru streaming sites
But I listen to underground Hip Hop all the time! Shout out to Windmills, Substantial, CYNE, Omaure, Anti Lilly, Awon, Phoniks, The Mouse Outfit, Otis Mensah
Underground 2010 - 2016 had some of the best music I've ever heard Section 80, live love asap, 1999, control system, acid rap, and habits and contradictions, and bastard etc
I see a lot of people trying to flex rap muscle, and I think they missed the point of the video because of that. I didn’t take it as him saying there are no more underground rappers or that it’s not good anymore, but its easy access defeats the purpose of underground. Now you have the underground and mainstream mixing and that’s what he’s pointing out.
But that’s not true... just because underground hip hop is more well known than other genres does not mean it is mainstream. All it means is that rap is bigger now and that the underground is bigger than ever. There are plenty of rappers who aren’t mainstream, y’all r honestly dumb.
Underground Hip Hoo still with us it just gotten less more showcased now.....back in time what got understand hip hop artist relevants was late night weekend mix hours....then local state college mix shows was a catalyst for real rap music....this was pre internet era......lets not forget of Soul Train, The Video Box, Rap City, Pump It Uo With Dee Barnes & MTV Raps now put on a visual face to hip hop with Hip Hop Music Videos.....its still here ......
@@Notorious_G.O.D_76 I think the biggest thing right now in the underground is bias and racism to be honest. I can't tell you how many opportunities I lost just when I was first starting to reveal my face 🤔 the bias coming in to the style of music, since most of the time if they are closer to old school they are shunned for they're skill and style, because they have grown to the mentality that it has "to have bars be on beat" like it isn't restrictions to put on art itself
@@chriskatz2355 You've got something there went you mentioned hip hop has racist moments......i did see how they view white & latin rappers don't get the shine they deserved in a predominantly black market. Underground not about actually going underground to get music otherwise all of rap in the 90's and before would be underground it's more of a sound or idea that opposes popular music at the time
kingtkillla67 this is the most accurate comment I have read on here , heavy hip hop listeners will always define sub genres of hip hop by the way it sounds not by the way it sells and for many underground artists , it isn’t all about the money and is truly in fact just staying true to their style , this is why we see so many one hit wonder artists in the main stream , they always try and appeal to things people want not what they want , this ofc results in terrible creativity
I'm just sayin nowadays most people take to youtube to see what's hot they dont even bother with tryna check out underground music im 24 and ppl my age and older know whats up with underground music but ppl about 18 and younger dont even bother with checking it out raider klan, suicide boys, Flatbush zombies, underacheivers they were amazing artist but ask the new generation about them and they couldn't even tell you about them its a shame
Darren Jones I’m 19 , I’m an aspiring rap artist and I only listen to underground music ( I am from the UK ) and I am all for the underground sound and never want to change
One of the best writers to ever pick up a pen been keeping underground alive for decades with 50+ quality albums..K-Rino of course. Also RIP Gift Of Gab & DOOM 💜
@Michael Greif underground hip hop isn't underground because it's not popular it's because the topics and sounds these artists use are strictly grounded toward the art of rap instead of creating music for radio play and trends. MF DOOM broke away from underground numbers a long time ago but is still underground because he stayed dropping true hip hop albums in the bling and internet era.
@Michael Greif lol wouldn't it be underground in the sense of rock and not hip hop then. I feel like your missing the point go look up the definition of underground hip hop.
Real hip hop is definitely gone .. because when we talk about hip hop it was jams that had all the 4 elements that became hip hop like graffiti , djs, mcs and breaking all into one culture and now it’s separated ! And it kinda sucks that that’s what happened to it but I really think that things move cycles and eventually it will go back to its original golden era and we will have dope hip hop once again!
Y’all ever looked into what’s going in Las Vegas? Vice just did a lil spotlight on them but Their underground is crazy, artist that you’ve never heard of are playing sold out shows in major venues and making genuinely great music. Look up The Noir Movement , B Rose BigHomieStone, Sabriel , REDX, Zelly Vibes, PapichuloTeej , Mike Xavier, Cabrera, could go on for a minute honestly. Vegas had on hip hop until real recently and since it’s been lifted these artist have been flourishing and since what happens In Vegas stays in Vegas everybody’s just over looking it. Hip hop is an attitude not just rapping and what’s happening in Vegas is the most hip hop shit. Since the Bronx back in the day. Not to mention Now that Two Winners of SYTYCD now Have been B Boys the dance style from hip hop are from las Vegas. I think it’s crazy noones talking about it. But whatever we getting money over here 🤷🏾♂️
1MRED Las Vegas easily has the most slept on “underground” scene IMO. Atlanta, Florida, Cali, NY, other major cities have artists, but I agree with you that the quality & quantity of Las Vegas artists is crazy overlooked. I mean the list really goes on. We could host a festival of local artists & if major label A&Rs were to show up, I guarantee multiple people/ groups would be getting recording deals. It’s nuts & we have to do our party to develop the infrastructure & support these artists need
We all use the internet now to get music out, 20 years ago major labels didn’t understand That. Groups like Hieroglyphics, living legends and even chuck D was able to capitalize the internet and using it to distribute music.
I think y'all in the comment section are missing the point. He's not saying underground doesn't exist, he's saying mainstream music and media have so much overshadowed the underground world of hip hop that it feels like the underground music is suffocating and has no way to reach the mainstream audience... Take a look at hopsin there used to be a time his music was able to reach mainstream audience while being underground... But in 2021 how many people know his song "alone with me". Underground hip hop was meant to make people really feel like they are part of the media while having normal lives but now an underground rapper is usually viewed as corny. I personally still listen to underground music but it doesn't carry the "coolness" it had before
Im starting to think these music channels don't actually go look for music unless it has a large following. Mike and the slums collective have already started the new era of underground hip hop and have been dropping damn there classic albums back to back this year.
Undaground Hip Hop certainly isn't dead. What's happening is that Underground Hip Hop fans have to strategize how they're going to keep up with the continuing Undaground Hip Hop Industry so they're always up to date on the Newest and latest tracks. Most Undaground Hip Hop fans are aware that the majority of the Undaground Hip Hop Industry exists on streaming platforms like Pandora and Spotify. However, Spotify usually has the latest and newest tracks by a long shot. I've Customized Spotify for over 2 years to inform me when tons of BRAND NEW Undaground Hip Hop tracks come out and I create Radio Stations with the latest releases. I've compared my current Rotation to weekly or monthly Undaground Hip Hop charts and I've found my Radio Stations to be at least 90% identical to other Undaground Hip Hop Industry charts, showing the latest releases and tracks

Bro there are still good underground rappers, look at Danny Brown, JPEGMAFIA, Freddie Gibbs & Death grips. They have strong and loyal fan bases I don't think underground is dying in popularity or quality any time soon
Vic 2 icey they not underground
G.A Vaughn yea but they definitely not underground
@@1dageneralAW02 So are they under the "alternative" label then?
None of them is underground lol
Listen to MIKE and the SLUMS collective their the new hip hop underground
TechN9ne has his own record label n he brings a lot of new artists to light more than a major label because those Major labels want to change the artists to their idea that they think he/she should look sound even to what they wear
Right
#itgoesup
But underground isn't about profit that's the thing...
SoundCloud and Bandcamp are the new Underground
@Michael Greif Nope again underground was created by talib kweli and mos def to bring hip hop back to its roots. They were as popular as main stream rappers at the time and wanted the game to switch back to its morals. You can be popular and under ground you just can't make music that follows trends, or is intended only to make sales.
@Michael Greif lol couldn't face the truth I see
@Michael Greif damn man ur so fucking stupid.
Man growing up in middle nowhere Alaska, I started digging tech in circa 2002. Blew me away the everyone saw how special he was(no hate) and I am happy for him. Hes a PUREBREAD LEGEND
As long as unknown artist keep making music underground hip hop is not dead. The problem is nobody wants to dig.
Bro like 3 years ago Florida just got mainstream. Go back 5 years, it’s a huge underground scene. My area has a huge underground. No big shows, but we have small festival type things.
Florida is the true king of the underground, specifically south Florida in the early 2010s with Raider Klan and Metro Zu. Real underground

Mach hommy is the new king of underground!!!!
Denzel word homie that shit is real as it gets sad not more people know so slept on
Underground Hip-hop is still here... I don't get it.
Underground hip hop has been mad dope wirh roc marci and griselda creating a new eastcoast style mixed with the 00s underground
BONES is keeping the underground alive
it's far from dead it just looks different, there's tiers and shit
underground hip hop is crowded and tough you gotta really fight for every play and every gig and it's not as much about album sales as it is about word of mouth and trying to get put on tours
there's mainstream, what I'd call mid-stream, then there's underground which gets hella deep and very very buried at times
This is so true. I haven’t heard pure underground hip-hop in a long time. On HighFocus, SektionRed and GlobalFaction you still get some good underground hip-hop. Big respect to everyone keeping it alive. I think it’s better overseas personally than it is in the UK and US.
Snoop Dog Answer is : *_" WHOOOO "_*

The internet happened. And Social Media. You no longer have to dig in the crates just click an icon.
this aged well
Not really. Its just a thin ass line between underground and indie at this point, imo
There will never be an underground scene like there was between 2002-2010. That was the underground golden age.
True. Mixtape and Blog era. Underground was so big it was mainstream lol
2002? Definitely a dope year, but Rawkus, Eastern Conference, Fondle'em, Solesides, Anticon, and Stones Throw Records started before that. 1998 had Blackstar, Killah Priest, Aceyalone, Heiroglyphics, The Dynospectrum, Jurassic 5, Rasco & Peanut Butter Wolf, ect...1999 had Pharoahe Monch, Kool Keith, Blackalicious, Atmosphere, MF DOOM, ect...2000 had Slum Village, Dead Prez, Quasimoto, Talib Kweli, Mos Def, JMT, Afu-Ra, Dilated Peoples Necro, Deltron, ect...2001 had Cannibal Ox, Typical Cats, Aesop Rock, J Dilla, Chino XL, J-Live, Masta Ace, Immortal Technique, Ugly Duckling
@@lyricsanonymous9036 : I'll give you 98, but I feel like your 2000s acts started peaking around 02-03.
I’d say 2002 - 2013. the early 2010s was a great time for underground hip hop as well

Underground HipHop is Very Much Alive. You can find them performing weekends at the clubs and in the hood with the people every day. They are still called hood stars. I would rather have the raw and real rather than the main stream garbage used to taint something so beautiful.
Well said and I concur.
ruclips.net/video/f3a_si4A1vQ/видео.html
underground isn't dead, regionalization is. People aren't as hot in their hometowns as they would be before the internet, but now "underground" artists are gaining traction slowly off rising thru streaming sites
That's one point
GOOD CONTENT BRO KEEP IT UP 👍🏾
But I listen to underground Hip Hop all the time! Shout out to Windmills, Substantial, CYNE, Omaure, Anti Lilly, Awon, Phoniks, The Mouse Outfit, Otis Mensah
Underground 2010 - 2016 had some of the best music I've ever heard
Section 80, live love asap, 1999, control system, acid rap, and habits and contradictions, and bastard etc
People who say any genre or subgenre is dead clearly arent in on the scene lmao
People in spots drop anything that's different and ignore it blatantly that's a big problem
It's called underground for a reason yk
@@chriskatz2355 No Doubt about it
@@Notorious_G.O.D_76 I think the biggest thing right now in the underground is bias and racism to be honest.
So does independent mean you’re underground? Idk if Tech N9ne fits in the underground category anymore he’s way to big now, in my personal opinion he should be more popular than he is
Griselda.
But, overall.. much like the middle class slowly dwindled, the “mid-tier artist” disappeared. You’re either Jordan or Vlade Divac out here, there is no more Horace Grant, Tony Kukoc
I call artists underground if they have no label at all to copyright to. But I do also distinguish independent and main stream.
Underground rnb was great the last couple years till the blew up. Gallant, Daniel Ceasar, Alina Baraz, H.E.R. it was nice finding them first.
It ain't dead it ain't buried it's right here.
Surprisingly I discovered Baby Keem from the radio. Underrated artist
Set me up with a link
Independent is not always underground. You had Mackelmore blow up mainstream independently. You have Tech N9ne who’s mainstream, but independent.
What’s up with all the ads before watching the video? We don’t know if it’s worth watching.
Its official youtube killed underground hip hop

Also RIP Gift Of Gab & DOOM 💜
I mean we still have a lot of underground rappers. Pouya, GhosteMane, Suicide Boys, 6 Dogs, City Morgue I can keep going.
exactly
@Michael Greif underground hip hop isn't underground because it's not popular it's because the topics and sounds these artists use are strictly grounded toward the art of rap instead of creating music for radio play and trends. MF DOOM broke away from underground numbers a long time ago but is still underground because he stayed dropping true hip hop albums in the bling and internet era.
@Michael Greif lol wouldn't it be underground in the sense of rock and not hip hop then. I feel like your missing the point go look up the definition of underground hip hop.
Right. Fire list man. Suicide Boys and Sic Hop from New Orleans is craaaaazzzyyy
@Michael Greif underground aint about how big u are. Its about not selling out and also its music that doesnt get played on radios and shit.
Shoutout Bones Chris Travis C Wulf Flatbush ZOMBiES Ua Pro Era Jpegmafia ... 🔥
this is crazy , popping up with what’s going on as of right now
Real hip hop is definitely gone .. because when we talk about hip hop it was jams that had all the 4 elements that became hip hop like graffiti , djs, mcs and breaking all into one culture and now it’s separated ! And it kinda sucks that that’s what happened to it but I really think that things move cycles and eventually it will go back to its original golden era and we will have dope hip hop once again!
It died when 50 cent was dethroned in 2007 by Kanye and Jay Z as well as 50' own label. Eminem did say 50 cent kept hip hop alive.
Underground hip hop can be found in a Reddit forum
Underground Hip-Hop isn't dead.
Underground hip hop is not dead. Got Rapsody sa-roc atmosphere. Late MF DOOM. Che Noir rj Payne.
So we jus gon ignore dizzy wright?🤦♂️

This is a very useful information, even for this old fellow.
I personally still listen to underground music but it doesn't carry the "coolness" it had before
Hopsin is the goat
I been saying this. There is no more underground you have to make music for mainstream nowadays
