Dinesh D'Souza and Christopher Hitchens go at it again at the 2008 Freedom Fest as the "Main Event".
FreedomFest is an annual festival where "free minds meet" to celebrate "great books, great ideas, and great thinkers" in an open-minded society. It is independent, non-partisan, and not affiliated with any organization or think tank.
Founded and produced by Mark Skousen, since 2002, FreedomFest invites the "best and the brightest" from around the world to talk, strategize, socialize, and celebrate liberty. FreedomFest is open to all and is purely egalitarian, where speakers, attendees, and exhibitors are treated as equals.
    www.freedomfest...
Christopher Hitchens (born 1949) is an author, journalist and literary critic. Currently living in Washington, D.C., he has been a columnist at Vanity Fair, The Atlantic, World Affairs, The Nation, Slate, Free Inquiry, and a variety of other media outlets. Hitchens is also a political observer, whose books - the latest being "God Is Not Great: How Religion Poisons Everything" - have made him a staple of talk shows and lecture circuits.
In 2009 Hitchens was listed by Forbes magazine as one of the "25 most influential liberals in U.S. media." The same article noted, though, that he would "likely be aghast to find himself on this list" and that he "styles himself a radical", not a liberal.

Maybe you are confused too, he says evil doers are the enemies of righteousness.
He claims that he "is" righteousness, therefore my statement still stands.
I read the bible front to back 2 straight times and I became an atheist.
Guess perfect justice is burning people alive for their slight skepticism.

Norma Garcia you poor soul don't you know anything about the so called faith that you profess to? Shows how much passion you have for your beliefs. Seek the truth and read the whole thing for yourself it would be considered on unfair to perform the evil practices of pastors and priest by guiding when it can be sought on your own volition "Read Your Bible" it's a book not an ornament that means it's meant to be read.

Of course he brought the two edged sword NOT to abolish the law but to enforce it "AND? whats your point? What I find interesting is. . . you are an Atheist correct? you hate anything that suggests the existence of A creator "GOD" because you insist you can not see proof of him, yet to see proof of his existence one only needs to look around. Take the human body for instance. . . Mankind is his most beautiful fine tuned awesome creation Yet you would rather believe that we evolved from monkeys or green men from space but the truth is that we were patterned after Gods likeness which means with his same spirit, this is the common denominator we share with God which allows us to communicate with him . . personally. . . communicating with one another through a " personal relationship" NOT RELIGION but through an up close relationship, Again I repeat THIS HAS NOTHING AT ALL TO DO WITH THE WORD RELIGION ! . . it is not make believe it is actual just as sure as you are reading this the spiritual connection between our creator and his followers is very real. so do what you want it is your free will choice to make good luck to you.
"Masochism of religion???" why do atheist insist on attacking a word that has nothing at all to do with what we Christians practice Remember it is about relationship NOT religion !

And what I find infuriating in some debates is how the religious defend god and faith but not what those ideas are based upon. They say, "we're talking about God, not the bible." Or, "I'm a Christian because Jesus touched my life." No, you're a Christian because it's tradition, historically documented, and based on a compilation of stories in a particular book. Had there been no bible, and had it not been adopted by the Roman Empire, there would be no Christianity as we know it.

"It is imposiible for the present-day Jews to renounce to the Idea that their Holy Wrritings are not history. There was no Exodus from Egypt, there was no Noah, there was no "promissed land"".

I read an AP article a while back about an incident in North Korea where a factory had caught on fire, and the workers had risked their lives -- and in some cases, had died -- in an attempt to save the photographs and paintings of Kim Il Sum and Kim Jong Il that hung on the walls of the factory. The story was passed on by the AP, but had originated with the official North Korean press arm. This was what THEY wanted US to know about the event. Think about that.
Thanks for posting this! You rock!

@kennhiser the telling of the story of siddartha (buddha) - how he was birthed from his mother and how his father (the king) reacted (with tears of joy that transformed to tears of sorrow) - makes buddhist philosophy a revealed philosophy in itself, as it sets the prince up as someone to take highest regards towards (for his teachings only, albeit).
and with buddhist countries such as shangrilah and myanmar you have to admit that it hasn't been practiced with much peace in mind.

I admire Hitchens, but why did he alwas mention the US as the only state with a secular constitution? Especially as in the Declaration of Independence God is mentioned I think 4 times?
    Take Germany for example.
Our constitution mentions god in somewhat of a "introduction" like this "Conscious of their responsibility before God and man, (...) the German people, in the exercise of their constituent power, have adopted this Basic Law." It is "nominatio dei" that means it just mentions a god and not "invocatio dei" which would get its legitimation from god.
The german constitution clearly states that Germany is a secular state. The french constitution is even much mor radical in its Secularism and Separation of Church and State.
Hitchens made that claim so often and I always get a little irritated when he does :)

For one, that the sinner keeps sinning and without the sinner there would be no sin.
Now that that metaphor is all used up...
That is why we create laws with which to govern and punishments to suit the crime, is it not?
That is not to say that compassion and humanitarianism shouldn't have anything to it such severe justice. Afterall a brother who grievously and inhumanly trespasses is still a brother... in the most general sense of the word. So too in such cases is love too strong a word.

Questioning the immoral, contradictory statements that religious texts make is perfectly acceptable. It is acceptable because those texts are the basis for religions. How would anyone know to be a Christian without the bible or a story of Jesus? It is not an innate ability to conjure up the 'right' beliefs. You believe as you do because others do, because of upbringing, because of tradition based on a book. But you can't defend your book, so you shift the debate to defending God.

Hitchens was usually right but he failed to see that the essential problem is not with what people think, but how thought is operating per se. In this talk he acknowledged that Buddhism is a system in conflict with itself, but failed to go a step further and see that conflict is in the nature of thought - not merely Buddhist thought. The true cult is thought as reaction. That is the cult we are all members of and Hitchens is our leader, speaking from beyond the grave to his own Necrocrisy.

Also, don't forget that Iran is quite the maverick and pursues an agenda of its own, rather than some over-promoted solidarity with Arabs. Arabs speak Semitic languages, whereas Persians speak Indo-European languages (for example Farsi in Iran and Dari in Afghanistan). Your example is incorrect as Canada and the USA are multi-ethnic countries comprised of people of different ethnicities who speak the same language. I do not believe in a personal God and I have never denied this but have expressed it clearly. @richardaberdeen and oh yeh, bible is actually my main source of my christian atheism,as in disbelieve in one of the possible gods.biblical god is no less than truly evil, genocidal, infanticidal and so on (yes ive actually read that myself), new testament is like "oh im the same evil god, but ive changed the rules, pls love me!". i hope he doesnt exist. i leave from this debate sry. it seems to be going to take much more time than i expected. if you wish consider yourself a winner i wont argue.

@richardaberdeen you still mistake atheism with a statement of "there is no god".you might look up definition of gnostic/agnostic theist/atheist (like agnostic atheist).im not a gnostic atheist, or so called "strong",who claims "there is no god".i claim: i disbelieve "there is a god".its a suspense of judgement, completely scientific and that is what you seem not to understand.but to cheer you up:i completely agree with 2nd statement and that "Atheism does not rationally explain anything".bye!

@InFromTheVoid haha thats true. One of my mates, whose a devout Muslim, when i became an atheist told me to research islam & science because where science ends Islam continues. What he meant by that is, god created the world, god created the universe, god created everything. hahaha. to me thats the lamest and most pathetic answer for anything. Its a major cop out in a debate against religious people. Ofcourse the big bang is just a theory! science always continues to find the truth from evidence

Question when Jesus touches your life how would explain it? If the guidelines for your explanation from your peer is it must have tangible proof, reason and logic. I submit that because he chooses to not consider that God is not limited to his guidelines. He may never believe by (faith) but rather by a personal encounter. Which I must declare happend to me. Thomas in the Bible a disciple of Jesus on TRULY believed only after Jesus appeared to him after dying on the cross. Some believe by seeing.

i love this man but he is GROSSLY ignorant about Buddhism and seems to be confusing it with Hinduism. Buddhism is NOT a revealed philosophy (same as he has previously referenced to Socrates). It is NOT a religion but a philosophy and he is confusing the actions of those ignorantly expressing their misguided and ignorant understanding of Buddhism with the actual teachings. Shameful.

Question how would you explain to your peer that Jesus is real if the guidelines for your explanation are limited by his filter of proof, reason and logic. My personal experience didn't fit his firewall. So I submit that some like myself ; who was a atheis will not believe by (faith) but by sight. When God does reveal Himself to you would deny your experience? Sadly some will refusal is a choice even after proof.

Buddhism is not a religion. It's a way of life. Christopher Hitchens is good at dissecting subjects such as religion yet brings nothing to his own argument. Yes he's talking sense but is merely saying what millions of us already know. Does not make him a genius, just means his voice is accessible to the public.

Organized religion and dogma is not the same as the living Spirit of Christ that leads those who received him in all love, purity and compassion
Insanity comes from carnal mind and selfish lusts. If you surrender to the Spirit of truth, instead of following your own selfish spirit, you will discover the power of God, freeing you from you sinful nature

This of course means that salvation was only needed by those who had sin taken into account, i.e. ancient Israelites cursed with the Old Covenant law of sin and death, which is nobody alive today, wannabe.

Have you ever actually READ any of the Bible then? I recommend it. Then you will learn that your 'God' is a brutal, misogynistic, racist, homophobic, slavery-supporting, repressive, murdering, genocidal maniac who was obviously created by a group of self-serving MEN (NOT the other way around!) and is the deification of a particularly nasty Bronze Age tribal warlord. If you think such a character is worth of 'WORSHIP' then you need to examine your our beliefs.

THE OLD TEST LAWS were abolished forever when Christ came to establish NEW TEST AGE OF GRACE for all mankind, where sin is not punished by stoning etc., but today is forgiven through faith in Jesus Christ only, which is the o r I g I n a l New Test ONE LORD, ONE FAITH, ONE BAPTISM of John 3:3 KJV. quote of Christ Himself; "E x c e p t ye be born again (into Him); ye will not enter the kingdom of God. John 3:3 KJV.
With thousands of manmade powerless religions SINCE THE NEW TEST WAS ESTABLISHED by Christ, ""who only" was crucified for world SIN, .... what religion of thousands are you following!?! ...and does it guarantee you eternal salvation and forgiveness of all sin to qualify for eternal heaven!?! ...does your g o d have a voice that you hear, does he answer your prayers, ...does he heal your body and cast out devils of the millions of demonized followers such as Satanism, etc.,!?!
Don't be deceived! ...there is only ONE LORD, ONE FAITH, ONE BAPTISM of the Holy Ghost, which IS NOT THE SPRINKLING OF WATER ON HEADS by man's human hand, and which is not in the bible but a false doctrine of billions.
The time is short before Christ appears for those who accepted Him by faith, not by proof, BY FAITH! He said, "I come quickly and my reward is with me..." Rev 22:12 KJV.

Lol at you saying that was the actual words of Christ. How do you know that? Was you there? Where's your proof that Jesus actually said those words. You can't say the bible is proof because the bible wasn't written by Jesus himself. It was translated by men (who are infallible) anywhere between 30-200 yrs after Jesus' death.

Ahhhhh not for nothing, but to tell ya the truth, I wouldn't wanna be Mr. Hitchens is just a short time away, let me tell you, I wouldn't wanna be him. And neither should any one of you who reads this. Don't go anywhere near evil because in most circumstances, those who have not faith are. Faith is believing in a power higher than yourself when common sense tell ya not to. Funny, those of you with faith have to admit, your faith is what gets you through in troubled times, how when you were falling down after slipping on a patch of ice, you fall a certain way as not to seriously injure yourself. Or just when you are about broke something becomes available to actually stop you from being broke. Or when you are lost the ability to find your way again. Evil on the other hand never finds is way, oh, it always rises into some kind of power or celebrity, but they are as miserable as the hell that has evacuated their souls. Nothing makes them happy. They start not to make any sense in their ideas and ideals, present with A, skip totally over B and conclude C. They are miserable, this video is proof of it. So steer clear away from them, they are lacking in any kind of logic or reason other than borrowing it from someone else. Believe and love will be with you always.

Although Christ-opher had a beautiful mind, his paradigm was conspicuously egocentric. The fundamental commitment of any and all religions is the negation of the ego, or false self, as to experience the divine or supreme being. Basically, not just all atheists, agnostics and/or humanists, but also the most fervently religious and spiritual people must set their ego aside. Very few succeed, and consequently experience nothing, contradicting their very own perspectives.
