This man is such a treasure. His ability to recall dates and seasons at the drop of a hat never seizes to amaze me. Such an incredible talent, such an incredible person. We are very lucky to have him in our lifetime
I love your collection Mr Alex. Youre not a horder but a vital network in helping many of these designs survive. That Galliano collapsible Hoop dress is going to be a rare hunt because he created that collection with no backer.
I highly appreciate people who collect these pieces because they’re truly art to me. As a teen I was obsessed with fashion. I used to watch the style channel religiously, Id spend money on all the fashion magazines. I have some amazing shoes and bags and a few clothing items that I’ve never worn, And some that don’t fit, but I love them just because they’re beautiful.
I feel such complicated emotions about people tucking these garments away! I do feel like this garments are historic at this point, but there are fashion fans, like myself, that actually wear our grails!
Who says he’s not wearing them tho???? I wear my archive all the time I just don’t see the need in parading myself around town for the approval or appreciation of others
@@Qween_Elektra0:27 he says himself that wearing the garments isn’t his objective…. But hides them away from people that will actually bring them back into the world! I’m so conflicted though because most of these are historic!!!!
@ I’m a HUGE fan of his! Especially his writing, but his contributions to Showstudio are riveting!!!! I know that he’s lent some garments to museums/exhibitions but he said himself that he has 4 of the same skirt! I don’t want to call that hoarding but I would say that atleast 2 could be circulating the resale market! I buy a bunch of vintage designer and I believe that we have to consider ethics when we participate in collecting or accessing rare and limited resources!!! Maybe he could offer a rental service eventually?
Wow ! I love everything he stands for ! I am so impressed by his dedication and passion , and his archive speaks volumns about his exquisite taste, eye for detail and craftsmanship . he is truly an art collector. I want to be like him some day if i make tons of money
so great and wonderful to see the passion you have for these garments and the respect you give them by collection . as an avind lover of beauty and fashion, I would love to be able to see and especially feel all of what you have collected. You are on a level of passion and love for fashion I wished I could be on.
I do believe clothes to be art pieces, so in some ways his collection is beautiful and highly respectable in the sense that he is an art historian. however, I believe the magic and romance of fashion is the wearing, degrading, sharing, and adventure of clothes. I feel like archive culture has really had a big plasticization effect on modern fashion and modern pop culture in general. its a shame these pieces aren't finding a life of their own outside of a closet.
It’s his money tho!!! and he can choose to spend his money on clothes to be archived in a personal collection. Furthermore, I doubt he’s in any way responsible for or contributing to archive culture - he’s been collecting for years. Yes, clothes are meant to be worn and enjoyed, but I highly doubt he’d be wearing most of this womenswear, nor would it be practical. This particular archive, I’m sure, is providing him with considerable financial security if the world falls on its head.
@@Qween_Elektra I mean I did say the collection was impressive and respectable nonetheless, however there are archivists who make income by doing rental services, this way they can recoup on the archive while still allowing the garments to have a life of their own. I am also not sure how important or profitable archive couture would be if the world fell on its head anyway lol
I do feel the same way, all this greatness and genius to be stored in a storage room is a bit of shame. It reminds of art collectors that hoard paintings and sculptures at their homes just for the pleasure of having them and them (only them) looking at it. I do get that if you have the money you have the right, but it’s kinda selfish to relieve your pleasure to own and have something just for the satisfaction to look at it and store it, cause let’s be honest he’s not doing for conservation purposes it’s for his own satisfaction. If this was an institution that has the means to showcase the work, properly preserve (for generations on) and support exhibitions or let fashion professionals to see this pieces for research or inspiration, I simply don’t see the point. Fashion is a living art form that comes to life wearing it, the end purpose is to wear it. I mean he said it, if he could, he would buy and collect every single garment from every great show or fashion designer and store it, for me that’s just selfish.
That moth moment sank my heart to the bottom. If noone is going to wear these clothes, spray with bug spray everywhere, for god's sake! You should educate yourself on garment preservation at the very least if you gonna call yourself a collector.
Very conflicting emotions. I understand that preserving fashion pieces is important. However, just having them stuffed in a dark room (with moths!!!) sounds sad and a waste of designers' work and ideas.
If you were financially literate instead of being a hater, you would know that the money he’s spent to collect these “dirty fabrics” would probably double, if not triple, in revenue considering the fact that many of the garments in his collection are limited edition, haute couture, and have proven resale value and demand. Buying luxury vintage is one of the most surefire ways of investing and making money from said investments.

indeed! though i'm sure there's a note in the tag of every garment, I do that to my own collection too.

definitely a museum worthy collection. thanks for sharing
He can versus that Moschino collector. He has all of Jeremy Scott's stuff.

Love it…. I’m glad I’m not the only one who enjoys rags beyond their physical look but the ideology of construction and stories that come with it.
Wow beautiful collection, I'm glad there's people archiving pieces like this

Wasting money on dirty fabric. This dude has zero financial literacy.
He can obviously afford it. Duh
