7:30 You're supposed to cut the plug off, run the wire through the grill, replace the plug and then not be able to put the plug back through the grill.
next time lol
When do you put the heat shrink on with that method? Cut, pull through grill, solder, cut again, add heat shrink, solder again, THEN realize it won't go back in?
Kinda like making the perfect flare on a line only to find you forgot to put the nut on first.
@@DaddyBeanDaddyBean Hey, Moe!
@@flagmichael Be quiet, I'm busy over here! (bonks flagmichael on head, pokes flagmichael in eyes)
As an automotive technician in collision which involves more mechanical then most think of especially with older cars. I will never not be impressed with how quickly you see/find those wires lol.
I believe they do find Eric.
what a great find...I never got into the OBD but seeing how it works, it makes the job a lot more easier than testing fuses and wires and every other possibility on what could go wrong...how many shops would have sold them a compressor or condenser or the whole a/c system for a simpler wire connection fix.....great job and you make us old school mechanics proud
Because the broken wires find him..😂😂
Using the force you must.😁
@@tetedur377 Way Too Much Crap on Them Now I worked As A Mechanic 40 years
“If I can do it, you can do it”. Not true, but I appreciate your confidence in me!
Still impressed that you're willing to go to a u-pull yard for your customers. Nobody near me would ever even think of doing that for a customer.
Kinda like asking a doctor to do a house call nowadays.
Not gonna happen.
I used to do that. It helps the customer and it certainly helped me by getting jobs done and out of the shop.
Yep...says much about how much a shop will do for a customer when the fix is just around the corner in a salvage yard. Self employment is wonderful if your shop works like anyone would think in locating parts the same day etc. Problem is, a lot of self employed folks treat their business as if they are an employee vs. the shop director and using their noggin the best way for their business. So far, Wilbert's is a lifesaver for Avoca and Bath as is SMA in taking the advantages to get real legitimate results for his shop.
'U-pull' yards are disappearing in many places due to NIMBY, pollution, insurance cost issues and increasing values of real estate.
@@tetedur377 you are on the money regarding second hand parts. I am a backyarder and do most things bar the engine rebuilds. The salvage yards or wreckers yards i dropped into had most of the parts still on the cars and you pull it yourself. Best time spent there and picking up later upgraded model parts for even my own cars.
Neat trick I learned from working as a Nissan Technician is an IPDM test. Most Nissans with IPDMs you can Turn the ignition on/engine off, press the door switch 10 times, turn the switch off then back on and the Horn will go off. It will cycle through components that the IPDM controls. Lights, Horn, wipers, cooling fans, and AC compressor. It's a quick way to check if the component is getting the signals from the IPDM. Helped me diagnose a lot of bad a/c compressor.
Sweet tip!
Or, plug in your classic NES controller, press Pause while driving, and press Up, up, down, down, left, right, left, right, B, A, Start.
@@hobbesip1 Lol, I think you're thinking of Super Mario to get infinite coinage.
What is a door switch
It's the button in the door frame that gets pushed when you close the door.
Just keep this in mind for the future, we always want to go to the salvage yard even if it’s vicariously through you. 😅
We coulda just sat in the truck. What a rip off! :(
I feel like we were on detention and missed the field trip. When will I learn to behave?
Should make a VR Game. "Eric O's salvage adventure". There is a secret Mrs O lunch level!
Man....I really wanted to go to the salvage yard....
I feel like a little kid that got left at home 🤣
Wow, the transmission lasted long enough for the AC to fail.
Ya, that’s the most miles I have ever seen one last. They must be highway miles mostly.
I thought maybe it was the big 3.5, which in 2014 had the conventional automatic (says EPA). But NO! It has the big 2.5 with the CVT. 25% better fuel economy!
It was probably replaced at some point
@@flagmichael 3.5s had a cvt since like 2007 lol, but it’s more robust than the 4 banger’s cvt
Man, this is really becoming the effortlessly finding broken wires channel!!
I service a lot of AC systems and get a lot that are holding pressure under the service caps so that's a great tip about the o-rings to save you replacing a Schrader valve
Tighten the Schrader just a smidge that usually stops pressure under the cap.
So the caps are designed to hold a running system's high side pressure? If the Schrader valve leaks by, pressures will equalize and I just picture the cap blowing apart!
@@petersmart1999 I wondered if there was an automotive version. Thanks.
@@ablackformula Not necessarily. A weak valve could leak at 150psi but hold at 140 psi; when 10psi builds up under the cap, the valve only sees 140 pressure differential and closes. The cap in this scenario is only holding 10 psi.
@@DaddyBeanDaddyBean Interesting and understood. Thanks for clearing that up! I've always just checked and considered the valve to be the only seal of the valve/cap assembly. I compare it to a tire schrader valve of a tire/wheel assembly. I don't check for o-rings on the valve cap there either lol.
Thank you Eric for showing the RUclips viewers that there really is integrity in the automotive world.
A/C? I'm amazed a 2014 Nissan Altima can run 257,000 miles and seemingly run good!! What?! A/C never touched ... and the CVT is still working? Amazing!
I'm there with you. Previous Altima owner that car was a dog.
@@TheFrenchPug so it barely made enough power to burn up the CVT?! LOL. I'm very leery of Nissans.
@@Ram14250 They use to be good cars. But I was recently watching a Nissan mechanic who pretty much did nothing but swap transmissions out. He got in trouble with Nissan recording his videos and telling everyone how much money he made from replacing CVTs. They made him delete all of his videos and haven't heard anything from him in a while.
Still last longer than any ram transmission 😂
I make comments, and ask questions....they're never answered. I'm a 70 yr old, retired ASE Certified Master Mechanic. I admire you and your wifes work ethic.

I now refer to my car the same way you do!
That's a 2010. It's a Plymouth. It's the PT Cruiser. It's the convertible. It's got the big 2.4.
That is _so_ sad!
@@flagmichael It's sad that you don't own this beauty. It's red, has chrome wheel covers and the woody trim package. It's definitely a modern collectible.
It's always fun to ramble around the wrecking yard looking for parts you need. Except when the weather is awful.
I love the trips to the pick a part place we have one couple blocks away it's a playground for me been going there for 50 years
I always loved doing AC work when I was wrenching. You fix it, charge it and you go for a test drive and get some relief from the heat.
I was impressed with how you found the problem so quickly. Nice job!!!
My absolute favorite mechanic ....you made my day! Thanks for the video, we are going to call you the broken wire god! Awesome. Stay safe from the tornados. Love from AZ ❤ where a/c is required 24/7!!!!
This makes my evening. Love SMA
All of us find what we look for - you look for broken wires. Good find! Nice work
I've watched enough of your work to know it's not luck! Great video as always Erik
Love this. I’ve seen a ton of these and would have loved to have been an apprentice/learner when I was 16 years old. I would have worked for free just to hear him think through these problems.
Them storms went through Minnesota. Here where I live north of the cities we had the same hail, strong winds, and I believe at least one tornado. I was watching the trees bend almost completely over. We had a lot of tree damage here. Nice job finding the crusties and broken wire. Logically diagnosed and repaired.
You're the man Eric, thanks again for helping out another Nissan Owner. I currently own two of them myself a 2001 Nissan R50 Pathfinder 4X4 with 3 pedals and 2 sticks and a 2015 Nissan Altima. About two years ago I had an issue with the A/C in my Altima, it ended up needing a replacement high-side pressure line. So when I saw you looking at that line first I thought for sure it was gonna be the cause of the issue for this customer. The repair you made to the pressure switch was quite the cheap fix (JUNKYARD PARTS FOR THE WIN) My high-side pressure line was sawed through by my vertical support that sits right next to that line (NICE DESIGN NISSAN) good news is the replacement line was bent far away from that said vertical support. So I would say this customer made out like a bandit!
Chis.
That was a great find and it goes to show that you have to do the visuals and not go crazy overthinking it. You are lucky it was that and that you have Wilbur's nearby. All the best to you and yours.
I never get tired of watching buddy
Absolutely about the caps they help keep contaminants from entering the system and is the final seal for the service ports. I carry those pigtails on my service van as I am a mobile tech and see a ton of damaged connectors and corroded wiring. Great thing about used engines they typically come with a partial harness that can harvest pigtails from which can fit a multitude of different OE'S. I normally have new but used is a great option on very hard to find pigtails
"We dont find broken wires, broken wires find us" 😂😂😂 Great channel and great video bro. Im an avid watcher of your videos and you are definitely a one of a kind mechanic. Thorough work and very honest. I just found ur channel maybe 8 months ago. Iv been binge watching all of the videos. Still got some catching up to do. Keep em coming !! 💯💯
I've been watching Eric for around 6 years now. I have learned so much from him. And not just him, he has made reference to some other great You Tube channels. Ivan. Rainman. Ratches and Wrenches, etc. I watch them all. Basically information overload. I just wish I worked on enough vehicles to be able to apply everything I learn from these channels.
I love that I know when you filmed this because you get the weather the day after I do.
Hey yall got the crazy weather up there too I see! Good job finding that wire so quickly 👏
I always hear self made auto repair instead of south main auto I agree with what I hear because you are
Awesome job. Like they told us in Armours' school, always fix the easiest ( cheapest) stuff first and then go from there. S
Knocking on the door of 700 thousand subs!!
Keep it up Eric O.
Nice find on the pressure switch and quick repair. Hopefully no leaks and no tornado's either!!! 😯
i notice you are very concern n careful in your work , great job , keep it up the good work 👍👍
Well done Dotor O. Yes we like seeing Wilberts too. Next time please.
More nuggets of Sma wisdom, great job Eric+++++
We bought our ‘95 mercury villager (Nissan quest clone) in 2000 with 50,000 miles. Around 200,000, the AC system had a leak. Turned out to be a puncture hole in the metal AC line under the vehicle under the seat behind the driver. Up until that point AC was working just fine. I am impressed with what I presume is a Nissan AC system. It’s now at 300,000, and just now starting to feel like it needs A little servicing.
Very nice analysis. Wish you were closer to us so that I could take you my problems.
LOL! Push the Schrader valve! HA Ha ha!
Also laughing about the clip where you only broke just the corner. I had an '06 Altima and I broke so many of those ubiquitous push buttons I bought a bag of 100 for about $4 from the AtoZ place on the Internet.
Kudos to the MeeMah for that tape trick! I've never seen it, and I search out such tricks having hands so large they make Presidents jealous!
Thank you again for taking us along. Stay safe.
Good job Eric O. Thanks for sharing buddy 👍
You would think there would be a trouble code stored for the A/C pressure switch. I look for A/C and Climate Control trouble codes first and then go to live data. Another great duagnostic video by SMA. Thank you
I liked the pick and roll tecqueic, nice repair in a tight situation.
Great video as always Eric
Eric,
Great video and fix - thank you! SMA#1

The man himself at the top of his mechanical and commentary game!
You Sir, have a gift for finding broken wires. I have had my truck for 10 years now ( 9 yrs old when I got it) and haven't had the A/C services, and it blows ICE cold. I wouldn't mind getting a service done, but nervous about opening a system that seem to be running great.
My 2004 Nissan Titan...blows cold never been serviced...Id say if it ain't broken dont fix it.
Leave it alone
Honestly the fact that it hasn’t been serviced is probably why it still works. No wearing out of the shrader valves and leaking.
If it works dont touch it.
😲 You got a truck when you were 9 years old?!? Lucky you! 😂 JK
Subtitles reckon this is the South Main Arts channel. Only type of art I have ever been able to enjoy!
Eric O, I love it when you say, "Its got the big two five." Right out of high school I spent four years on the shop floor in the General Motors Lansing Michigan Oldsmobile factory, where we made the Big Seven Five engine. My future wife worked machining connecting rods for the Big Seven Five. Every time you say "the big two..." I laugh out loud. The idea that an engine is "big" when it is FIVE liters _smaller_ than the Olds "Rocket Engine" my wife worked on makes me laugh every time.
Aww, love over sprockets.
So much opportunity for innuendo, so little time...
I had this exact issue on my 2013 Nissan Altima. I just fixed it last week. Just to add one more symptom, whenever I pressed the "Ac/Max" button, it would shut itself off after 10 to 20 seconds. Great video!
A legend as always. Thanks for the great videos.
Damn Eric, I had my 1997 Mitsubishi Magna (Diamante in US speak) aircon serviced and filter/drier replaced 5 months ago for the very first time. Never gave me a problem in its life, but cooling efficiency was getting a little poor lately. Had the car from factory new. I am a firm believer in if it aint broke, leave it alone! has only 275,000 KMs on it.
Good deal with the tape on a pick trick! Another great video!
Eric, we have the same machine at work. Good and reliable
I enjoy seeing your work and am also very jealous as to how those bad wires just jump out at you. I am a Heavy Equipment mechanic and sometimes it has taken hours to find where the bad wire is. Wish I was that lucky on my 2016 chevy colorado haven't been able to find where the bad wire is yet. But I know it has one keeps blowing the 10 amp fuse 🤣 so for now it is 65 and windows down for a/c
nice to see you using good connectors they are amazing
Fantastic video! I wish Eric’s shop was closer to me.
Excellent video!!
Great find on broken wire !!
2000 Subaru outback, 140k miles. AC Never serviced. NYC burbs. Did replace head gaskets in 2018 using SMO video.
Neat trick with the tape on the pick.
SAE states that the caps are the primary seal at the ports. Not the Schrader valves. Slightly leaking Schrader valves are not the cause of low refrigerant. Your tip of making sure the o rings are in the caps is spot on.
If its according to a specific mechanic in Florida, it is always the Schrader valves and you leak check by just charging it back up and look for the UV fluid.

I always love a trip to Wilbert's U-Pull It of Bath. Hope the weather won’t be as threatening next time and we can come along 😂
2:24 Hey! Don’t call me a ding dong ya freakin’ yahoo! Awesome video as always.
I know it sounds weird, but we do enjoy the field trips. Especially when you go to the u-pull. Something about running around a scrap yard.
Thx, you wouldn't believe how sometimes some small detail in your video is uniquely helpful.
In my case, I'm working on a 2015 Nissan Altima SV 2.5L and I can't find the high pressure A/C port.
After going through RUclips video one after another, (2013-2017 Altimas) yours is the only one that actually shows being hooked up to the high pressure port and verifies I'm looking in the right place just forward of the radiator overflow tank and outboard of the low pressure line. Which isn't 100% helpful because it's missing on this Altima I'm working on but at least I've seen exactly where you hooked up.
Interestingly, this 2015 Altima also can't do a self diagnostic because it doesn't have a push button that depresses when the Driver's side door closes. Without the button, I tried simply closing the door 10 times quickly to see if that would trigger the self-diagnostic but it doesn't.
If someone has run into either or both of these issues on a 2015 Nissan Altima SV 2.5L, posting your observation and possible solution might be helpful for anyone that comes after me (As for me, I'll probably trudge on trying to fix this thing before someone will likely respond).
SMA you are AWESOME man!
For those deep-recessed push pins , try a 1 gallon paint can opener . Works great and doesn't ruin them .
that made perfect sense for your shop

Well another great fix well done 👍
Professor O., your class very much enjoys the field trips to Wilbert's U-Pull (to Bath) and wouldn't mind going again when it's convenient 😉
Thank you Erick my AC randomly stopped working everything checks out hearing you say it could just be low makes me wonder if it just needs a charge. All electrical is good no leaks condenser looks fine. I’ve been told it’s a sealed system there should be no leaks but hearing you say cars happen to loose some gas in system makes me think now maybe just needs a charge I don’t think the cars ever had the AC maintained
Eric o great catch, your a great machanic.

Good diagnosis.
neat trick on the tape, thank you.
I've never had mine touched at all.. owned since it was a year and a half old. Was 95 here today worked fine.
Found that alldata is not always correct for capacities. Hooked my van up at the shop I work at now. Pulled out 1.7, Alldata said my capacity was 2.9# with Rear A/C. GM data showed 2.2. That's a pretty big difference! Was nice to be able to do it right this time.
I learned something today 👏
