Great stuff, ty! From a distance the first cable looks like a USB 3 type A to micro B. For others if they're wondering, if you have thunderbolt ports on your computer they're already cross-compatible with USB-C (and others).

It’s great to see a video on tethering. There are too few videos on this topic. It is probably the single most important technique to help a notice learn about all aspects of creating images fast and with immediate feedback; and obviously an invaluable tool for the seasoned pro. For those using the Sony platform; Sony also makes an excellent free software suite to tether their cameras (note that you cannot directly tether a Sony camera into Adobe LR). Like the Canon software that you demonstrated; the Sony version can remotely control all settings on the camera, it is also very fast and the connection is very robust. But unlike Capture One, you cannot set alerts for overexposed or under exposed areas of the image and other advanced settings. But still, these free softwares directly from the manufacturer are a very good start.
For those using the latest models of cameras consider checking out the max transfer speed specifications of your camera when choosing a cable. For example, the Sony A7R5 supports USB-C 3.2 at 10 Gbps. There are no (or very few?) traditional cables that are of useful length (15 feet or more) that have these transfer rates. Also, the USB-C standard can offer full Power Delivery (PD) for simultaneously charging your camera; you will never charge a battery again...The work-around to get a long cable that is capable of both 10 Gbps and PD is to use a FIBRE OPTIC cable of the type used by gamers for VR headsets. These are cheap, VERY thin and lightweight, some give you full power delivery, and you can get full USBC 3.2 GEN 2 at 10 Gbps speeds. These can be purchased on-line from “third party” asian manufacturers as long as you make sure the cable supports all the features you need (USBC connect with one end 90 degree, length you need, 10 Gbps, power full delivery…). Note that, for example, the USBC 3.2 optical cable I use that supports 10Gbits and PD does not work at all on my older A7R4 (it doesn’t seem to be backward compatible). Typically, these fibre optic VR headset type cables are not as robust as standard cables like those from Area51 but they are a good starting point: more affordable, easy to order online, and much faster if your camera supports 10 gbps. Also, don’t forget to protect the USB-C port on your camera. Damaging a camera port can lead to very costly repairs. There are many specialty devices you can mount on your camera for this purpose but one workaround is to use an adjustable camera L- bracket (for example by SmallRig). You can slide out the L-bracket side arm so that the order of things is: L-bracket, cable USBC L-connector, then camera; in this way the L bracket serves as a super robust protective bumper. This even allows you to lie the camera down on a table connector-side down without worrying about your USB port…

So Sony doesn't work with Lr? Did not know that, strange. I have used Sony's Edge software or whatever it's called. Works okay, just like EOS Utility.
Thanks for all the info, very helpful.

@@botvidsson (just to clarify; Sony files can be readily edited in LR or PS). The LR tethering function does NOT work with Sony cameras at all and never has. I suspect there’s a licensing disagreement there…. But I don’t know. Some people have found workarounds where the images from the camera go to a directory that is being “watched” by LR for auto import…. Waste of time if you ask me. The Imaging Edge software by Sony for tethering has gone through many versions and it’s very fast and very robust (I never get connection drop). But it’s not as complete as Capture One with for example no overexposed alerts and not really able to apply presets directly on import …. Having used both I prefer the speed and robustness of the Sony software with a Sony camera and then I just import the images in LR/PS at the end of a shoot. That said, for those that the workflow includes editing with CaptureOne then the choice for tethering is obviously Capture One. Thanks for making great videos!!!!

Great explanation. You should make a video of showing a full project shooting from start to end, including the retouching. All in one video. Set the product, the light and the camera settings, the tethering and the post production. It would be interesting to see the whole process.

Great video Martin! I have a question about your Hasselblad and other H5D models. How is the tethered live view in phocus software? Is the live view feed responsive or comparable to modern sensors? Ive seen a few H5D's on ebay and im considering upgrading from 35mm to Medium format for all benefits youve described.

Wow, firewire 800! I’ve got a FireWire 800 drive I’ve been trying to get data off of.
Can you please tell me what Mac OS (10.13, 10.14)is on your Mac?
Even with the USB-C and FW800 adapters I thought Apple discontinued firewire support.

And that? So what did you mean? The flashes? You must own some flashes, otherwise it's hard to get anything done. If I need more flash power or some special gear for a job I rent. For bigger film work I always rent what ever gear I need to get the job done.
If the camera breaks I just pick up the phone and I'll have a rental Camera delivered, or I use my Canon backup.

@@botvidsson cool!Sorry got confused, Yeah was wondering since you said in this vid for big budgets it's the hasselblad, just typically people rent the high end gear for those here.
Do ever hire like a phase one or something or just don't need to since you own a cool Hasselblad 🤓 and guessing you have the hasselblad because you wanted highest quality for your own work? That thing must be pricey haha

    • @botvidsson

Ah, well I was joking a bit there. Yes, people always rent gear for big shoots when traveling or in need for top level gear.
It is kind of crazy to own the Hasselblad, it was extremely expensive and I can't justify or defend why I spent that money but... I say that it's for the love of photography and a bit of stupidity 😁
