“I grew up in a humble agricultural family with limited means. My father couldn’t afford to educate me beyond Class 5, so he pressured me to drop out of school and shoulder the financial responsibilities of the household.
But I had different dreams. To me, education was a beacon of hope that could help me crawl my way out of abysmal poverty.
I cleared the qualification test to a government residential school outside the village and completed my Class 12 there. At school, when we were asked to talk about our culture and write our script, I wrote Warang Chiti, which is a script for the Ho Language, invented by Lako Bodra.
The other students mocked me and said that no language like that existed. It was my first exposure to the lack of documentation of my tribe and its culture.
At 17, when the pressure to return home and work mounted, I ran away, far from home, to Punjab.
I had some savings from tutoring kids in my village and took admission at Punjab Technical University. I attended college during the day and waited tables at night, worked at a call centre, among other places, to scrape out a living. As soon as I found a job in a web development company, I was able to send money home to fund the education of both my siblings.
Reading books and talking to city dwellers exposed me to the harsh reality that Warang Chiti was not acknowledged under the eighth schedule of the constitution. So, I decided to return to my village and use my education to preserve my tribe’s language and culture.
I visited several elders in the village and read Warang Chiti publications to acquire in-depth knowledge about the language-all the while herding cattle through the dense forests.
Using my web development skills, I built a website and also started a RUclips channel called bit.ly/HOSamajLive, which documents the history, traditions, rituals and script of my tribe.
This has helped me reach out to Ho tribal members not just in and around neighbouring states, but also those that are scattered in different parts of India. Today, it has 32,000+ subscribers. I want to expand it further.
To further my knowledge, I am also Scholar of Ph.D in Indigenous knowledge of Science and Technology, from Bhubaneshwar’s Kalinga Institute of Social Sciences. KISS DEEMED TO BE UNIVERSITY BHUBANESWAR ODISHA.
I aim to record and build enough documentation about my tribe and present it in front of the government so that it can recognise Warang Chiti under the constitution. There’s 50 lakh of us. I don’t think it’s too big a request to ask for.”
