There are few things more embarrassing (or more annoying, if it’s a neighbor’s car) than a car alarm that won’t shut off. There are a number of reasons that a car alarm won’t turn off, and a few different methods you can use to silence the shrieking - and end the embarrassment.
Part 1 of 1: Turning off a car alarm
    Materials Needed
Needle nose pliers (or a fuse-pulling tool)
    Owner’s manual
Step 1: Familiarize yourself with the alarm. While it may not seem to be the ideal time to be reading your owner’s manual, in many cases user error is the problem. Verify you are following the correct procedure to shut the alarm off.
Step 2: Start the car. Put the key in the ignition and try to start the car. Almost all alarms, both factory installed and aftermarket systems, will shut off and reset when the car is started.
person putting key into drivers side door
Step 3: Use your key to unlock the driver’s door. This will usually turn off and reset the alarm. In the event that the driver’s side door is already unlocked, lock the door and then unlock it again.
person pulling fuse out of fuse box
Step 4: Pull the fuse. A factory-installed alarm will have a fuse in the fuse box; pull the fuse to cut the circuit and shut down the alarm.
Look for the fuse box on the left hand side of the steering column. Fuse boxes usually have a fuse diagram on the lid of the fuse box.
Most alarm fuses have an alarm label on them. If the fuse is not labeled, consult your owner’s manual for the location of the alarm fuse.
Tip: Some vehicles have multiple fuse boxes - check your owner’s manual for the location of the various fuse boxes.
Remove the fuse. If the alarm shuts off, you have pulled the correct fuse. If the alarm doesn’t shut off, re-install the fuse and try another one until you find the correct fuse.
Once the alarm has shut down, reinstall the fuse and see if this resets the system. If the alarm starts up again, it is time to bring in a pro to repair it.
If the alarm system is an aftermarket item, look for the fuse in the engine compartment. Consult the owner’s manual if you cannot locate the fuse.
    person disconnecting black negative terminal
Step 5: Disconnect the battery. This is a last resort, as it will reset all of the electrical systems in the vehicle and your vehicle will not start until the battery is reconnected.
Disconnect the negative terminal (the black one) from your battery. The alarm should shut off immediately.
Wait a minute or two and reconnect the battery. Hopefully, the alarm has reset and will not start up again. If it does, try removing the battery cable again.
Tip: If this does not work, leave the battery cable disconnected and contact a mechanic or alarm installer to repair the system.
Step 6: Maintain your key fob. Most modern cars use a key fob to lock and unlock the doors and shut off your alarm. Unfortunately, the fob will not work if the batteries are dead, or it is simply not working.
If you need to press the unlock or lock button of your fob a number of times before it works the battery is probably going dead and should be replaced. A malfunctioning fob should be replaced as soon as possible.
Hopefully, if you’ve tried the above steps, the alarm has stopped shrieking and all of the dirty looks from the neighbors have stopped. If it was necessary to unhook the battery to stop the alarm, a professional mechanic, such as one from YourMechanic, should inspect the entire system to make sure everything works normally.

oh my god, i had been battling a shitty alarm on a 1991 CRX si for days. I replaced the starter, and the car never started after that. It ended up being that starter relay killer. Immediately after watching the video i went out and cut the red and black wire that had been spliced to the ignition hot wire..connected that back and boom, car fired up no problem..thanks so much

This was less technical help than I was expecting but you did make it seem less scary. So I opened a beer and pulled out my meter and rebooted my mindset. Got my finicky alarm to at least stop and got my truck back on the road. I think I'll take it to a pro soon enough to remove it and get it close as possible to oem, but I figured I should thank you

I'm demo'ing a circa 1999 Viper 800 ESP alarm that has strarted going bonkers after 23 years. I suppose now we know how long it takes.
When he said, there were NO mods to the factory wiring harness, I was thinking , that's IMPOSSIBLE!
There has to be an ignition wire that they cut and wired to the alarm to interrupt the starting procedure !
Sure enough, at the end of the video, he says you have to REPAIR the ignition wires and possibly a starter wire that got cut.
Then he spent really no time on that, the MOST important part of the procedure.
Anyone can just go ripping stuff out. It's the repair that is the most important aspect of the process.

My vehicles anti theft is oem from hyundai, if I remove the anti theft fuse will my vehicle still start after? I’m worried to remove it and have to take it to the dealership for them to reset it or something.

I have an 03 Aztek. My key is lost and my passkey 3 security module got broke. I have a passkey 3 from the 04 Aztek. The ignition assembly is different between those years. The 04 rally bolts onto the steering column whereas the 03 IS built into the steering column my lock cylinder has been drilled out do you release it in order to use the lock cylinder from the 04 which is not a fit. What do I need to do to fix this the easiest way. Will the same principle work as in with the gentleman who lost his key? My car has been down for three and a half months

ps. if i remove any wire from the alarm box, the car wont crank over, so i guess in some alarms removing the wires from the mainbox does equal a non-start / non-crank condition

After doing so a check engine light came on (p1164 A/F sensor) I know it's not the sensor because the only thing that was changed was the removal of the alarm. Basically when the alarm was removed all the wires from the aftermarket system was cut off and I don't think any was butt connected or soldered. Any ideas on what it could be before I start tracing each wire one by one in the wiring diagrams ?

Hi! My 98 honda crv ignition switch malfunctioned, and while swapping out with a new one, I see the old ignition switch wires have a few splices in them that connects to both a long ago disabled aftermarket alarm system, as well as wires that seem to go toward my car circuit wiring. One red wire appears to go through my firewall and connects to the horn.
The alarm system has not been working over a decade, and my car stills runs before the ignition switch failure. Not sure what previous mechanics have done to help bypass the starter kill function, as well as making the electric locks only manually operable now.
My question is, can I disconnect the wires from the alarm module box going towards both the ignition switch as well as a few clip- in connectors that connect from the module box wires to what seem like some type of plug ins to my car's own circuitry? I need my horn to work properly in order to pass state inspection. Any grounding issue I need to worry about regarding the way the old alarm wires were configured into my car? Or perhaps relay of some sort that I just pull off to disconnect the whole alarm? Thanks in advance for any advice you might offer me.

I just found out that my 2010 Escape has a Ford dealer installed VSS System (7l3z-19a361) and that's why my horn's going off when opening doors. I found a 2012 Ford installation manual but they show it installed and tied into the steering column area. Mine is by the glove and I see it's tapped into the center console harness by the fuse box. I wonder if I can just start pulling taps off the wires.

There is usually a wire schematic on the back of the main alarm unit, That'll show you what goes to what. If you need a full manual - Audiovox now owons code systems and you can get their tech dept at 631 231 7750. good luck with everything..

Thanks! I have the schematic for two years later on same generation vehicle, so that should suffice. Same unit, just located and tapped differently on mine. My main concern is whether there is anything I could get into trouble with, but I know wiring well enough and it's still an aftermarket system. Gonna follow your lead, pull the battery negative, unit power wire first then just trace back the harnesses. Appreciate the AudioVox tech number. Subscribed.

i have a 01 jimmy i have a after market remote start hooked up it came with this car when i got it. the problem is it has 2 different alarm systems on it and both work one is factory the fob i guess they call it which i have problems with going off and car does not start. i found the remote start unit under the dash and it came with two remotes. the factory alarm came with one. i cant find the factory alarm need help to take it out. ive already reset and reprogramed it numerous times. i have taken out the remote start thinking it was the problem and wired a new alarm system in and worked fine but after every hour i would pust the unlock botten it would unlock the doors and set the alarm off. after i start the car to shut the alarm off. i push lock and unlock it would not go off any more untill i wait about an hour again. also the remote start doesent honk when i had it in. but when i use the factory remote it honks. and thats how i figured it had 2 alarm hooked up and working at the same time

I bought a car with an alarm, a "Viper". The passenger door doesn't lock, and neither door unlocks with the key fob. The dealership won't mess with it until the aftermarket alarm is removed... Will a shop charge me to remove an alarm? I'd like to go back to factory, with just a usable key fob without the aftermarket alarm. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance

i probably shouldn't have put in an after market alarm because the car has keyless entry :/, i put it in valet mode to disable the alarm so it wont go off after I've locked it with the after market alarm remote an open it with the cars keyless entry , this would be a work around but expect for the fact the drivers door doesn't lock . an in instances when i so some pressing of the remote the drivers door locks an the 3 other doors remain open. what in the world do i do, I'm thinking i should just get rid of that after market alarm cuz i want to be able to use my keyless entry

Thanks for the video, I have a really basic question regarding the wiring since I suspect I developed a short, are car alarms grounded to chassis/battery? My fob started acting up to the point I had to be right next to the car to unlock it, and now any electrical load messes with my idle (very bad when raining/humid), i'd like to test if the alarms wiring is to blame, where should I start? Thanks.

    • @Lesscoelectronics
      @Lesscoelectronics  7 лет назад +1

If the range is the issue, thats either the alarm's antenna, location or a low battery in the remote most likely, Id start there.

Hello Great Video ( Would it be ok to ask a question )?
I have a 2001 dodge neon with a dei 522t, remote start with a transponder 5UU something like that, not sure the model.. Anyway the alarm has been going off by itself a lot, so I unplugged all the wires going into the 522t remote start, I also took 2 fuses that where in 2 wire hardness,.. The strange thing is the alarm still goes off once in awhile, what could be causing this, and is there anything I can do?? Please Help..
I don't mind if the headlights flash, it's the horn honking, that are driving my neighbors nuts, and I been unplugging my battery every night..

    • @Lesscoelectronics
      @Lesscoelectronics  8 лет назад

is it a siren or a factory horn sounding off?

    • @seeingblind8
      @seeingblind8 8 лет назад

No siren is installed, it's the factory horn.. when it goes off the head lights flash and horn honks.. also when it was acting some what normal, the remote wouldn't disarm the alarm, with new battery installed in remote, the only way to turn off was to unlock the drivers door..
      Thanks for the reply.

Thanks so much, I didn't know this car had a factory alarm.. after some googling I found other people with the same problem.. I just figured that what was under the dash was the problem.. Now I know all I have to do is lock the door manually when getting out..

    • @henriquedemeloesilva1072

      here is the deal...
i just had a set of keys made (simple metal-only kind). it unlocks the vehicle but when i open the door the alarm goes off.
i rarely lock the vehicle but would like to use the metal key to unlock the vehicle in case it gets locked. i keep the 'fancy key' inside the vehicle - can't use the metal key to drive it, it does not work.
the original key is too bulky for my pocket... hence me having the metal key in my key chain.
i just want all the lights-flashing and horn-blowing to go away... we don't need it where we live (49913).
as far as what kind of system it is? i have no idea... 2006 jeep commander...
      thanks, kiko
