@@MovieswithMary Just a heads up, the DUB messes up Scar's line after he kills Shou and the chimera. He says "Two Human Souls", but in the original translation, it's just "two souls", those souls being Alexander and Nina, NOT Shou. This is evidenced in the manga where the manga-ka has a depiction of Alexander and Nina ascending into heaven with halos, whereas Shou is the ONE and ONLY person who ever is depicted as going to Hell.
Episode 3 is about the extremes of religion.
Episode 4 is about the extremes of science.
Also, Shou Tucker is considered the most hated character in all anime history, no other existent villain could generate so much disgust and rage than him. Two things will guarantee a character is absolutely hated: hurting kids and hurting animals (especially dogs). Tucker does both at once, and it's his own child and his own dog, two beings that should be able to trust and depend on him.
True, and after doing the same to his wife, he was still fine with doing it to them. Worse and worse.

There is a bit of a mistranslation at the end of episode 4. What the character should have said was, "God, two souls have just been returned to you," instead of "two human souls." Putting the word 'human' in there makes it sound like Tucker is going to heaven with Nina, when actually the author of the manga this show is based on was very clear that Nina and Alexander go to heaven while Tucker burns.
I feel obligated to coment this on reactions to this episode:
In the manga, the guy who kills Shou Tucker and Nina at the end walks away saying "God hear me... Two souls have been returned to you". He doesn't say "human souls" like in the anime. This difference is evidence that he is referring to Nina and Alexander instead of Nina and Shou Tucker. Another detail that helps back up that possibility is that, in the manga, the author puts at the end of an chapter a small doodle of every person who died on that chapter (no matter who) with angel wings flying up to heaven, even if they are bad and/or villains. In this specific case, she draws Nina and Alexander flying up while Shou Tucker is falling down to hell. His is the only death that gets a doodle like that in the entire manga.
Alchemy drove Shou Tucker to madness as it drove the "Freezing Alchemist" to madness in the first episode. Alchemy entails severe risks of multiple kinds. Most of this early story line was previously told in a prior television adaptation, Fullmetal Alchemist, which ran in the United States from 2004 to 2006. Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood ran in the US in 2010 and 2011. In the prior telling, the heartbreaking story about the little girl and the dog was treated over the course of two episodes, perhaps slightly easing the shock of the horror. Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood tells its story at a faster pace for reasons of scope that reveal themselves in later episodes.
I watched the 2003 version first because I was new to anime and didn't know Brotherhood was the "correct" version. It was hard to sleep for a few days after those episodes. I just wanted to learn anime-to-human transmutation so I could bring him to life and kill him again myself.
There is fan comic where new soul arrives at hell and Satan is there to greet that person. That person is Shou Tucker. Moment when Satan realizes who just arrived, he picks his phone, calls God and just says "He's here..." with wide eyes locked onto Tucker.
I've seen maybe two anime with the oldschool yellow subtitles, how neat it made it to Brotherhood

This episode honestly feels like the writer ripping your heart out, but honestly keep with it, one of the most incredible shows I've ever seen lol
In case you dont know, ep3 is actually the first chapter in manga, and the "novice" line will come back in the end, like a circle, just like alchemy.

Pity you didn’t watch the original version first, before Brotherhood. They took longer on this part, making it worse when it happens.
It's a heavy show, to be sure. The kind that epitomizes the content rating of "mature content" without it being anything sexy. And there will be other wth moments but nothing quite as gut-wrenching as this, even if maybe it should be. This one just brought you so close to the people involved that it hits differently. I'm also one who kinda feels like Scar was being merciful. I know some people are upset that he killed the chimaera.
I normally watch all your vids Mary, but I can't with this show. just came in today to give you a like for getting through this one. Good luck with the rest of the series.

This episode is especially traumatizing for me because I grew up with lots of dogs and I really love them. I remember the dog I grew up with and the way when I would come to the door and it would run to me and go Edward.

I absolutely agree to the initial statement. There are many good stories out there, I think I like the story of Attack in Titan more than the story of FMAB, but I just connected more with FMAB and therefore, I call FMAB my favorite show, not AoT🤷🏻♂️
I actually feel the same way. So many anime with amazing stories , some stories are better but FMAB has a special place for so many of us. My 2ed fav is Steins Gate. What's yours?

This episode is a rite of passage. It's so heartbreaking and disgusting. I knew it was going to hit you hard, but I'm glad you're so invested.
You are the first reactor I've seen who was completely clueless about Tucker, just how most of us where when we first saw the 2013 version where he didn't seem to be a bad guy
The 2003 version broke me. I wish they had given it a bit more time in Brotherhood but that and the pilot episode being kinda clunky are my only small qualms with Brotherhood, but it's better in almost every other aspect.
It also would have been fun to see Youswell but at least it makes for a funny inside joke in Brotherhood.

@@matthewzeller5026 It is a good movie. But you might want to rewatch the series first. That movie is basically the last episode of the 2003 series. But yes, it's a really cool anime movie.

I always recommend skipping all anime openings (despite being as great as this one) because I hate that the contain so many spoilers.
I feel sorry for the animators and the artists who are working hard to make the opening
