- An interview with Bret Michaels and Richie Kotzen of Poison that featured on, rock music show, Raw Power in 1993. They talk about Richie joining the band, and the new album Native Tongue.
I have loved Poison from the first time I ever saw 'I Want Action" on MTV . Being a country boy, moved to the city, I had never seen MTV. With that, Native Tongue is my favorite album. I feel that it brought out the best in Bret and all that he can do as a vocalist. Rikki and Bobby really brought that tight blues rhythm. Regardless of what Ritchie did, that dude is phenomenal.

There I lay,in a deep,deep Coma after a bike racing crash.When I woke up over three months later,I had nothing.I could not walk,talk,eat,drink nor read or write.
Going through the tuffest recovery was just total hell,I seen the flames,the hands reaching for me as rocks and roses hit me non stop,flames all around me.I needed something To Believe In.Needed something so,so bad.Lucky for me I found this wonderful song,like a few others it helped me to go on with my life,even after going to hell and back.Thank you Poison for giving me the something To Believe In,thank you so much.

Poison is a great band. Very underrated because of their look….which I love btw. Nothin but a good time…best party rock song ever. Played at my wedding. Life goes on solo is one of the best guitar solos ever.

The last 60 seconds of this interview Bret says it all. Richie was asked to join the band TO MAKE THEM BETTER!!!!!!!!!! He has the talent to elevate them from a very limited musical capacity, 80's make-up wearing stage show to REAL musicianship.

Well hate to break it to you but the vast majority of fans weren't buying Poison because they were technical guitar players, that's what Yngwie, Mcalpine and Satriani were for. The "limited musical capacity" CC brought helped them blow UP. Maybe Richie should have focused more on writing hit songs instead of banging Rikkis finance. This was 93 when there was still amimosity between Bret and CC so his comments don't surprise me but in 99 after time apart to heal Bret said "I remember looking over at our guitar player and thinking, man I wish CC was there ". 🤷♂️

My point is the rest of the band didn’t have the musical talent to support RK, I have a lot of respect for poison even though I’m not particularly fond of their music. They worked their asses off and they put on one hell of a show. On this I’m guessing we can agree on

In 1993 it was scary to be in a hair band. With the worlds attention on grunge music, the hair and makeup just became old and kinda gay, lol. Almost overnight!
Bret was obviously trying to steer the band away from the popcorn style tunes they were writing. I dig Ritchies style and he is very talented. Maybe too talented for Poison. But CC has that over the top style. If Poison sticks to their roots in pop metal, CC is the best fit for the band
I dont know. Blues Saraceno fit pretty well with poison.

I for one, didnt get a purchase choice. there was no new hairmetal music being released so its a moot point about who killed it.
Music is a for profit industry, you have to market for the buyers and pop music was big and R&B came from nowhere to erode the market share.

una vez expulsado kotzen d poison,inmediatamente llaman a blues,y esta vez saraceno acepto ser el guitarrista d poison ,y con el comenzaron el tour sudamericano en chile,argentina,venezuela y mexico,para volver a sudamerica en 1994 para tocar en sao paulo y rio de janeiro.

@@morgancatherwood5665 Think it had more to do with a conscious shift in image - trying to get away from their poppy glam metal past - and trying to evolve with the grunge scene rather than body language betraying anything, IMO.

Richie was given Ricky's fiance the unskinny bop bop bop bop. Which was a very stupid move because then he got drop drop drop
All these comments bagging on Richie make me laugh. He was the best thing to ever happen to Poison, and had more talent than the lot of them combined. And as for his affair with Rikki's wife, it's not like they were just in it to fool around. They fell in love, got married, and had a daughter. You can't plan something like that happening, it just happens. Plus, Poison haven't put out anything worth listening to since Native Tongue. Richie has gone on to make great album after great album with multiple bands.

Richie was a different type of guitar player compared to CC but I wouldn't say better. Just different styles that's all. CC is a massively underrated player. This was a great album but for me the soul of the band was missing
Cc is the poison guitarist just like Vince in the motley singer....
They are different for sure. And CC is a great guitar player for Poison and a great guitarist, but you're on meth if you think as a guitarist or as a musician he's even close to Richie's level.

This looks like a sports team that brought in an all-star player, but ruins the chemistry of the team. On paper it looks great, but it doesn't work gametime.
I think they were nervous. Bret was pissing in his pants needing a new player to replace C.C. after he left and kotzen needing money and experience. I would say Brett had more to lose, here's grunge coming and he has nothing but pop glam catalogue that is irrelevant. He's literally putting all he's eggs on one basket and that's Kotzen.
Not a bad record and Richie is a fantastic guitarist. Just a shame he always ended up being behind other players ... like Paul Gilbert in Mr Big
Paul Gilbert? Lol Gilbert wished he was Kotzen and had the richness of Kotzen blues phrase! Now all Gilbert does is sell DiMarzio pickups. Ironically Gilbert has been trying to mature and has been more subtle, rather then just noodling. But it's too late at this point. Kotzen still has a band with remarkable players.
