Greetings James, my Canadian brother! I visited Vancouver back in the 70s, what a stunningly beautiful city! I’m an old guy now, I started my guitar journey in 2022 at age 65 and loving every minute. Thanks for all of your encouragement and enlightening videos!

This is very valuable information for beginners, and the part about breaking things down is on spot. When I first started learning guitar, I found your youtube channel and it has helped me a lot in my progress, still does. I appreciate all the effort and time you put into making these videos, you’re by far my favourite teacher. Lots of love!

God Damn these are the best videos to learn guitar on youtube, at least from a beginner perspective, everything is so understandable and clear and concise, also the free E-Book makes a huuuge difference, this just can't be overstated. Your personality Mr. James is so kind and welcoming, I haven't ever felt lost in my couple months of learning through your videos, I almost feel like you are in the room with me when I practice, just wanted to say Thank You, it really is a wonder that we can get something like that for FREE, absolutely ridiculous, Thank You :)

You made a great point about simply memorising songs that someone has laid out us. After 2-3 years trying to learn guitar that's exactly where I feel I'm at.
I don't feel any closer to calling myself a guitar player than I did at the beginning.
I tried understanding theory but I never feel it.
I'm continually waiting for that one thing that makes me shout Eureka but it remains elusive.
I've always felt I'm on the outside looking in when it comes to playing guitar so maybe it's something you are born with or not.

The way I learned to play was to play songs I really loved and wanted to learn to play, and not songs someone had given me. I would go to RUclips and find the easy lessons for those songs, and practice. Also, I might pick up the guitar everyday for no more than 20 to 30 minutes, not tire myself out or frustrate myself playing several hours a day. While I might pick up my guitar several times a day, I would not play anymore than maybe 30 minutes, so I would not tire myself out or frustrate myself.

I repick the guitar up after about 10 year's from buying one and not really doing anything with it. I've played banjo now for about 13 years. Fiddle & Tenor sax to. Didn't really know which direction to go with a guitar? So I started fingerpicking like my banjo. Wow wish i would have started doing this awhile back. I enjoy playing the guitar so much now. I retired the sax and the fiddle for a little while.

Hello, I noticed that you have a course, how about having your classes written in a personalized e-book, to make it easier for your students who don't have much time available?

    Ok James,
And RUclips family. Is it possible to remember and play a full song without something written in front of my eyes? Ive been working on Country Roads for a year but can't play it from memory. Started with strumming and now using bass runs. How can some people seem to have 100's of songs memorized??

I wish I could say the same, but in my just over 2 years of trying to learn absolutely nothing about playing guitar was fun.
On the contrary, it was extremely frustrating and always felt like a chore that I really had to force myself to do and couldn't wait for it to be over.
And force myself I did, 1-2 hours every day for over 2 years, with zero results.
In my personal experience the 2 biggest myths about guitar are "It's never too late" and "Anybody can learn".
Both could not be more wrong, so it would just be honest to set your expectation accordingly.
I still enjoy watching your videos tho 🙂

Last year I started to lean guitar at 63 years old. I can’t believe how well I’m doing in 9 months I’m actually playing guitar. It’s all perspective in the beginning I told myself it’s probably going to be hard but that’s ok yes Im going to struggle and that ok , I don’t say the word practice ( bad word ) I say I’m going to play my guitar. I wake up excited to grab that guitar. One last thing what’s difficult today will be much easier when you wake up the next day. Blessings to you all.

One big problem is the very phrase “learn to play guitar”. Play guitar in what way? There is a vast gulf in between “Red River Valley” & something John McLaughlin did. “Learned to play guitar” in what form? What style?
