- The Public Gaol in Colonial Williamsburg will be a somber stop on any eventful outing amongst the old city.
Inside the Public Gaol during the 18th century, this brick prison was the criminal quarters of those committing various crimes in the colony of Virginia.
It held everything from Virginia’s worst villains to loot-hungry, sword-slashing pirates from the high seas…to the runaway enslaved and colonial debtors unable to repay their financial obligations.
The widespread, many crimes the people of Colonial times would commit, would oftentimes find them accused and awaiting trial here at the Public Gaol, wondering if their sentence might cost them their life. (f.y.i. Pronounced exactly like the English word “Jail”.)
From before the Revolution and after, this was the dark prison house for those breaking the law in Virginia.
On a cool, rainy morning in town, I set out to explore the Public Gaol in Colonial Williamsburg to see what I could discover about its gloomy past.

My goodness...what an eerie place! I think I might have only peeked in the door! If today's criminals were placed in such harsh conditions, maybe we wouldn't see such hatefulness in our world today.
I live in a converted 1940 barn in South Carolina. I came inside for a break from outside where I had been laying old handmade bricks, stones, broken marble and granite, etc. to make a mosaic patio, very much like the one I saw at a garden shed in Colonial Williamsburg. I appreciate that you mentioned the old brick walls. They seem to have so much character...If only bricks could talk!
Another fantastic video! You should definitely have a series on the History Channel. I love you work and your narrating voice. There's a feeling of mystery that keeps one hanging onto every bit of your stories. Thanks, and keep them coming!
Thank you! Yes no doubt eerie. Sounds like a very interesting project you’re undertaking. We appreciate your support & words!🎩
Another great video Scott !! Great Work!!
Thank you!!
No place makes me feel more connected to Williamsburg than the Gaol. A place that you can feel the suffering of those who would have been there. The cold of the winter or the humidity of the summer. The fear of death and the smell that was there. It's a strange connection but it's there for me.
Yes its most definitely a place that unlocks its eerie past while exploring in the present, no doubt.
I don’t think I’ve ever been in the jailer’s quarters. I’m glad you were able to go inside to get video!
Thanks Dave!!
I applaud your videos! They should be documentaries on the History Channel. I will need to revisit the Gaol on my next walk down D.O.G. Great job....Kevin
Thank you Kevin!! Your words and support are greatly appreciated!
Wow. No wonder people were terrified of being sentenced to debtors prison. I don’t think I would have been able to enter those dark cells, Scott! You’re far more brave than I am.
It was eerie no doubt!!
We used to visit Williamsburg several times in my childhood and once when I was older in the 1990s. I oddly never recall being allowed to visit the jailhouse back then. Is this a feature in the town that's just recently been opened up to the public??
Spectacular. Your narration on these videos is right on target and very professionally done. I will continue to share your videos. Also, thank you for doing another colonial Williamsburg video. 🖤🕯🖤🕯
Thank you Danielle. Your words and shares are greatly appreciated🖤🕯
